Chattanooga: CCS teams sweep, take district titles

by Mallory Carra

The Chattanooga Christian tennis teams won District 6-A/AA championships with home victories Thursday against Notre Dame.

The defending TSSAA three-time state champion Lady Chargers edged the Lady Irish 5-4. The state-runner-up Chargers beat the Irish 6-3.

Both CCS teams are undefeated in the league through 12 matches, and each is 12-2 this season. Notre Dame’s boys are 9-3 overall and 9-2 in 6-A/AA, while the Lady Irish are 11-1 overall and 9-2 in the league. Both Notre Dame teams will finish second in 6-A/AA.

The winner of the regular season will face the District 5-A/AA victor for the Region 3 championship in May. The District 6-A/AA individual tournament begins May 5 at the Champions Club.

“All of our girls and guys played great today. It was a total team effort and every match counted,” CCS coach Sue Webb said.

After singles play, the boys’ teams were tied at 3, while the Lady Chargers led 4-2, leaving CCS to clinch both matches in doubles. CCS’s Holly Scholl, Claire Henley, Stephanie Sizemore and Gretchen Rowe recorded singles wins for the girls, while Notre Dame’s Jennifer Taylor won at No. 1 and Caitlin Robbins won at No. 5.

The Chargers’ Will Reynolds, Jonny Herberich and Andy Driggans won in the top three singles spots; Notre Dame’s Matt Cambron, Kyle Long and Charlie Ponitz won Nos. 4-6.

The Chargers swept their three doubles matches, and CCS’s Gretchen Rowe and Sizemore won at No. 3 doubles to secure the Lady Chargers’ victory.

CCS beat Notre Dame’s girls 6-3 last month and edged the Irish boys 5-4 in March.

“The kids are feeling really strong going into the postseason,” Notre Dame coach Anne Ricksecker. “We were hoping to make things a little more interesting, but hopefully it’ll get more exciting next year.”
