Georgia: Dewberry will sit two games
ATHENS, Ga. — Georgia junior linebacker Darius Dewberry, a five-game starter last season at the weakside spot, will miss the first two games after damaging an estimated $2,100 worth of property early Saturday morning at St. Mary’s Hospital.
Dewberry was among some players who went to the hospital after teammates Donavon Baldwin and Marcus Dowtin required stitches following an altercation at The Library club downtown.
The 6-foot-3, 236-pound Dewberry broke a parking gate and several pots containing plants.
“I know he is very remorseful for what he did, and he’s going to pay a price in addition to the public humiliation he’s going to have to deal with,” coach Mark Richt said. “He won’t play the first two ballgames. We’ve got some early-morning runs that we try to run these guys out with, and he’s got at least 10 of those. He’ll have some counseling, and there will be at least 20 hours of community service.”
Dewberry and Dowtin took part in Monday’s practice, but Baldwin did not. Baldwin, who had a DUI charge in January, was suspended indefinitely by Richt following the altercation.
Senior punt snapper Jeff Henson, who had a DUI charge last November and was arrested early Saturday for public intoxication, also was suspended indefinitely and did not attend Monday’s practice.
Downtown Athens is off limits once camp begins, and Richt is considering whether to extend that ban to other times of the year. When told Clemson coach Tommy Bowden repeatedly points out how few of his players get in trouble because there is nothing to do, Richt said, “I think there is some truth to that.”
It was then suggested to Richt that he send his players to Clemson for social events.
Allen staying busy
Junior cornerback Asher Allen would love to handle kickoff and punt returns, but that scenario is doubtful.
“He may practice both and we may prepare him for both,” Richt said, “but I don’t think he’ll be the starter in both.”
Allen led the Bulldogs last year in kickoff returns with 28 for 690 yards (24.6-yard average), including an 82-yarder against Kentucky. He had one punt return for 1 yard, as former receiver Mikey Henderson handled that chore.
“I really don’t have a preference,” Allen said. “As long as I can get that ball. That ball feels good.”
Junior corner Prince Miller entered Monday as Allen’s top competition for punt returns, with senior cornerback Ramarcus Brown and redshirt freshman tailback Caleb King in the mix at kickoff returns. Sophomore safety Reshad Jones, sophomore receiver Tony Wilson, and freshman tailbacks Carlton Thomas and Richard Samuel also will get looks this month as potential return options.
Odds and ends
Bo Fowler will take over all the snapping chores while Henson is suspended, and he will be backed by freshman walk-on Ty Frix of Calhoun. Frix originally was not among the 105 players invited to camp, but that changed with Henson’s suspension. ... Richt said he has more game-ready receivers entering a camp than he can remember. ... Freshman receiver A.J. Green aggravated an old groin injury Monday and may be limited today. ... Georgia commitment Aaron Murray was named MVP of the recent Elite 11 quarterback camp in Aliso Viejo, Calif. Another Bulldogs commitment, Zach Mettenberger, was recognized for having the strongest arm. ... True freshman Christian Robinson (weakside), redshirt freshman Charles White (middle) and true freshman Dowtin (strongside) are the third-time linebackers, according to position coach John Jancek.
