The only witnesses so far to a shooting Thursday on East Brainerd Road are the people who were shot at, police said.
Police spent Thursday afternoon interviewing witnesses and processing evidence in connection with the shooting of a 21-year-old man, who was a passenger in the back seat of a black sport utility vehicle, said Chattanooga Police Department spokeswoman Sgt. Jerri Weary.
The man, whose name has not been released, was shot in his back shortly after 1 p.m. He was taken to Erlanger hospital and his condition was not known Thursday evening, Sgt. Weary said.
The victim and four other occupants were stopped at the traffic light in the 6900 block of East Brainerd Road when a silver Chevrolet vehicle pulled up beside the SUV. A man exited the Chevrolet and began firing shots into the SUV, police said.
So far, the only witnesses who’ve come forward are the SUV’s occupants, and they told police they did not recognize the shooter, Sgt. Weary said. They also gave different descriptions of the suspect’s vehicle, she said.
“We’ve not had anyone come forward,” she said.
Chattanooga police don’t know if the shooting was gang-related, but they’re not ruling it out. But with so little information, they’re not ruling anything out at this point, police said.
Officers questioned witnesses late Thursday evening, searching for a motive, said Sgt. Bill Phillips, who oversees the Chattanooga Police Department homicide division.
“Until I talk to the guys when they come out of interviews, I really won’t know much of anything,” Sgt. Phillips said.
