Tennessee: Jukich, Lookouts get 2-0 win over Smokies

A night after watching the Tennessee Smokies and Chattanooga Lookouts nearly set a Southern League record for runs, Ben Jukich figured a repeat wasn’t necessary.

Jukich pitched seven scoreless innings to lead the Lookouts to a 2-0 win Thursday at AT&T Field. Tennessee won Wednesday’s series opener 18-16 in 3 hours, 52 minutes, but Jukich faced the minimum through 14 batters in a game that lasted just 2:19.

“My thing out there is to throw strikes, get ahead and work quick,” said Jukich, who had seven strikeouts and no walks. “That’s been my approach all season. It feels good when guys can get out of here early.”

Jukich and Robert Manuel, Chattanooga’s pitching representatives at the Southern League All-Star Game, made their first appearances since rejoining the team from Triple-A Louisville. Manuel worked the eighth and ninth innings.

The Lookouts (19-28) took a 1-0 lead with two out in the second inning when Drew Anderson reached on an infield single, advanced to second on a balk and scored on Chris Denove’s single to center. Sean Henry opened the third inning with a home run to left field to make it 2-0.

In the fifth inning, Tennessee (24-23) produced four singles and no runs.

The first single was wiped away by a double play, and the next two resulted in runners at first and second. Josh Lansford had the fourth single, but his drive to center was fielded by Drew Stubbs, who threw to Denove in time to get Wellington Castillo at the plate.

“I knew it was their catcher running,” Stubbs said. “I took it off the bounce and made a good enough throw to where Denove could make a play on it.”

Stubbs, Henry and Manuel have been invited to the Arizona Fall League, as have second baseman Justin Turner and shortstop Chris Valaika.
