ALTAMONT, Tenn. — The mother of Shawn Landolt told police that her son called her and admitted he’d killed Jeremy Meeks, 30, and burned the man’s home.

Assistant District Attorney Steve Strain read from interviews Sharon Cobelo gave to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and the Broward County, Fla. Sheriff’s Department during Mr. Landolt’s preliminary hearing Thursday.

That information was for Judge William Anderson to bind the case over to the Grundy County Grand Jury, which meets Nov. 21. The grand jury will decide if there is enough evidence to indict Mr. Landolt on a charge of criminal homicide and arson.

Mr. Landolt, 26, was arrested in Chattanooga on June 12, the same day firefighters found Mr. Meeks’ body in his burned-out home on Shadrick Hill Road in Tracy City, Tenn.

Special Agent Craig Frost with the Tennessee Fire Marshal’s office testified that responders found the body lying on a bed and a hole about 1 inch by 2 inch in his chest.

Special Agent Frost said he found a lever-action .30-30 caliber rifle about 4 feet away from Mr. Meeks feet on the floor of the bedroom.
