Chattanooga: Teams make case in Sequatchie Valley

WHITWELL, Tenn. — The annual Sequatchie Valley football jamboree was an opportunity for every team involved to prove a point. Several did just that.

In one quarter Marion County looked like a completely different team than it has in either of the past two seasons, while Bledsoe County proved it will be much more than a one-dimensional offense and South Pittsburg proved it is still going to be tough to deal with.

Marion County clobbered Lookout Valley 26-0 on the strength of two long touchdown runs by Joe Muir, and one each by Corpeio Brocks and Chris Martin. Muir scored on runs of 65 and 25 yards and Brocks added a 30-yard TD. The Warriors then capped the night with a 13-0 win over Bledsoe County, and again it was their speed as Brocks scored on a 35-yard run and Robert Bailey caught a 70-yard scoring pass from Trey Hill.

“It helps to have a little bit of speed,” Warriors coach Troy Boeck said. “Our kids have worked hard to turn things around and I think they’re getting more confident with what they can do.”

Bledsoe County began the jamboree with a 12-8 win over Whitwell as junior quarterback Tyler Harvey threw for more than 100 yards in the quarter, connecting with Matt Ridley and Chase Brown for TDs.

“Everybody is going to key on Chase running the ball, but we found out this spring that Tyler can throw it,” Bledsoe coach Hubert Roberson said. “He can make a big difference for us.”

Signal Mountain, which will play a junior varsity schedule this fall, scored first on South Pittsburg when Hogan Whitmire hit Luke Locke for a 36-yard TD, but the rest of the quarter belonged to the Pirates. Junior Terrell Robinson threw three touchdown passes, two to Malcolm Jones and another to Jijuan Fennell in the 20-6 win. Robinson’s first pass of the night turned into a 59-yard TD to Jones.

“I was pretty excited at first, but I settled down and got in a rhythm after a while,” said Robinson, who wore No. 7 in honor of his cousin Ty Robinson who was severely injured earlier this week in a scrimmage. “Malcolm can fly and Jijuan is a big target, so teams are going to have to respect our passing game and not just key on our backs.”

The Pirates, who had players win the fastest back (Kartrez Bibbs) and fastest lineman (Chase Robinson) races also beat Grundy County 13-0.

In one of the final quarters, Sequatchie County defeated Signal Mountain 13-0, highlighted by Brandon Dykes’ 99-yard TD run.
