China’s Li wins parallel bars gold

BEIJING — Li Xiaopeng has dominated the parallel bars — and the competition — winning the sixth gold medal in gymnastics for the Chinese men in the Beijing Olympics.

The 2000 gold medalist on the bars and a two-time world champion began with a sensational leap forward from one end of the apparatus to the other, using only his arms to catapult him.

His score of 16.45 on Tuesday beat South Korea’s Yoo Won-chul. Yoo used a collection of high flips and steady handstands to get a 16.250.

Anton Fokin of Uzbekistan won bronze.
