Chattanooga:Scenic Land School hires new headmaster

Veteran school administrator Herbert “Yogi” Anderson will become head of Scenic Land School sometime within the next month, according to school officials.

“We are extremely happy and fortunate to have Yogi come on board,” said Tom Jones, chairman of the school’s board of trustees. “We hope to increase the school’s endowment and assure its continued existence, growth and success for the entire tri-state region. He will help us grow the school.”

A private school founded in 1966, Scenic Land serves prekindergarten through eighth-grade students with learning difficulties such as dyslexia, attention deficit disorder and Asperger syndrome.

“What could be better than working with kids that are so special?” Mr. Anderson asked.

The new headmaster has 36 years of experience in private school education at the Baylor School and Notre Dame High School, including roles as a teacher, head coach, camp director, development officer and alumni affairs director. He now serves as the senior development officer at Sewanee: University of the South, where his responsibilities have included cultivating and soliciting donations for the school’s capital campaign. The campaign recently ended after raising $205 million, surpassing a $180 million goal.

Mr. Anderson said Scenic Land has the potential to become the premier source for students with learning disabilities, and that he intends to be involved in all aspects of the school.

“The school has a first-rate faculty already in place, that is key to fulfilling the school’s mission,” he said. “My strengths are in development, recruiting new students, marketing and raising money for the school’s ongoing success.”

Earlier this year, Scenic Land experienced financial shortfalls that threatened its existence, but fund-raising efforts and a gift of $1 million have laid the foundation for a substantial endowment and greater stability, according to school officials.
