1. Save the Daves!
A movement is building among some SEC fans in hopes of persuading ESPN to hire Raycom’s three Daves — Baker, Neal and Archer — for regional games next year. The domain name www.savethedaves.com is now taken. I know some people don’t like the Daves, but I’ll say it again: They would be better than several ESPN crews. I’m on board. Save the Daves!
2. Hurry-up offenses
It will be interesting to note the strategies of offensive coordinators with the new 40-second clock. The guess here is that more offenses will run the no-huddle and increase the pace of the game. Auburn and Tennessee certainly will. But remember, the offense can’t snap the ball until the defense makes its substitutions.
3. Watching the QB situations
LSU, Auburn and Kentucky — three teams with high aspirations coming off bowl wins — are very uncertain about their quarterback situations. But they’ve got time. LSU plays three seemingly easy games before traveling to Auburn, but Saturday’s game might be played in a lot of rain. Auburn feels comfortable with both Kodi Burns and Chris Todd. Kentucky doesn’t play an SEC game until Oct. 4.
4. Percy Harvin’s status
There is concern among Florida fans that Harvin will miss the Hawaii game (confirmed by Urban Meyer), possibly the Miami game and maybe even the SEC showdown at Tennessee. Harvin has done very little this preseason following right heel surgery to shave off bone and fix an abnormal growth. The Orlando Sentinel quoted Harvin’s high school track coach, Tom Anderson, as saying, “Maybe after game three or so, they’ll make sure he’s fully ready to go.” Florida plays Tennessee in the third game.
5. I’m a man! I can call plays!
Trooper Taylor left Tennessee to take the offensive coordinator’s job at Oklahoma State in the offseason, but he’s sharing the position with Gunter Brewer and neither will be calling plays. Head coach Mike Gundy announced this week he’ll handle the offensive play-calling for the opener against Washington State.
