South Pittsburg: Shooting believed accidental
Staff Report
A 19-year-old South Pittsburg, Tenn., man is in critical condition at Erlanger hospital after he suffered a gunshot wound to the head late Thursday.
Police believe Jonathan Stevens accidentally shot himself under the chin with a .380-caliber pistol, said South Pittsburg Police Chief Mark Garner.
He said the victim was sitting inside a black sport utility vehicle outside his residence in the 1000-block of Elm Avenue when the shooting occurred Thursday night.
Police responded to the incident at about 10 p.m. CDT, and Mr. Stevens was airlifted by medical helicopter to Erlanger shortly afterward, Chief Garner said.
Chief Garner said he didn’t anticipate any charges.
“Hopefully he’ll recover,” he said. “I think he’s learned more from the accident than any charge could teach him.”
