Why I Love my Job at Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA)
I have worked at TVA for almost four years. Presently, I am a power system electrical engineer in the Market Participant Scheduling group that is part of the Transmission and Reliability Organization (TRO). Market Participant Scheduling develops and maintains products and services that support operation of TVA’s power system and power programs to enhance reliability and efficiency. Some of our accountabilities include near-term load forecasting, asset management, generation scheduling, and maintaining the customer loads and pricing for real-time interruptible products.
I love my job because of my working environment. We really are more like a family in my group than coworkers. We all help advance each other’s skills and continuously work to better our strategic processes and decision-making to keep the lights on in the Tennessee Valley. You never know what is going to happen in daily operations – every day is a challenge and the weather can change the situation drastically. But in the midst of it all, we still have fun while doing it. It’s also a nice bonus to work with people who care and support you in times of need, be it happy or sad circumstances.
I love my job because not only do I want to be successful, but my management team and coworkers want me to achieve all of my goals. My group has a mentoring program that provides encouragement, professional guidance, and assistance in a confidential, mutually beneficial relationship that supports both TVA’s success and the achievement of career goals. TVA also has an engineering graduate progression program that helps further develop engineers from level A to level B standing. In addition I am currently pursuing my MBA and Professional Engineering license, so it helps to have individuals I can learn from in my field, gain direction in different areas, and even to check over my assignments for class.
I love my job because TVA not only works hard in providing energy, environmental stewardship, and economic development but we also give back to the community through TVA's outreach programs like Partners in Educations and Chattanooga Combined Federal Campaign. I am able to participate by teaching character traits to elementary students and volunteering my time and skills working at local nonprofit agencies. I also assist in employee recruiting at colleges and local job fairs in the Tennessee Valley.
There is nothing like loving to go to work and being excited about what you do every day. These are all reasons I love my job -- I have truly been blessed to work with such great people and at a fantastic company!
