Song of 2008: Under the radar

by Sean Phipps

It's almost the time of year again when we here at the TFP have to compile our "Best of" list of our favorite albums. 2008 was, and still is, a heck of a year for good music. Before we get ahead of ourselves though, I'd like to take a look back at some great songs from 2008 that might have fallen under the radar of music journalists and bloggers. Joining me this week is music writer Casey Phillips. We're going to reveal some of our favorite songs of 2008. Join us?

The songs:

Grouper -- Heavy Water/I'd Rather Be Sleeping

Jim White - Jailhouse

Ben Taylor - Wicked Way

The Spring Standards - Goodbye Midnight

Some noteworthy shows this weekend:

Tonight is a “benefit” show at JJ’s Bohemia. For what I’m not sure. Still, Telly and the Red Ants and the Rough Shapes are performing. I’m sure it’s a great cause whatever it is. 10pm. $5.

R&B singer Eric Benet will be at Midtown Music Hall tonight. Eric headlined Nightfall a year ago. If you dig old school soul this is the show for you. Tickets are $10. Show is at 9pm.

Monday is the gigantic “Ten out of Tenn” show at Loose Cannon Gallery. This Tennessee-only songwriting series is a doozy. Artists scheduled to perform: Andy Davis, Butterfly Boucher, Griffin House, Katie Herzig etc. Showtime is 8pm.

Have a groovy weekend.
