Marie Cockrell

Marie Cockrell, 93, of Ringgold, Ga., went home to be with the Lord on Friday, Dec. 5, 2008, at her residence.

A longtime resident of Chattanooga, Mrs. Cockrell was a member of Harmony Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Alfred S. Warren and Benjamin F. Cockrell.

Survivors are her daughter, Lois (Buddy) Ellis, Ringgold; two grandchildren, Stephen (Valerie) Fraley, Chattanooga, and Lisa Phillips, Ringgold; two great-grandchildren, Heather (Mark) Lewis, East Ridge, and Tyler Phillips, Ringgold; great-great-granddaughter, Brianna Lewis.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday in the chapel with the Rev. Billy Denham officiating.

Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery with Don Paul, Bill Coker, Charles Clayton, Bill Murray, Tom Russell and Coleman White serving as pallbearers.

Joshua Emmanuel Crosby, infant, passed away Thursday, Dec. 4, 2008.

Dollie Crowe

Dollie Ownbey Crowe, 93, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, Dec. 5, 2008.

Dollie was a member of Ridgedale Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert H. Crowe; brothers, Robert, Buddy and Richard Ownbey; sisters, Regis Parrish and Ruth Hall.

Dollie is survived by her daughter, Nancye (John) Pikciunas, of Soddy-Daisy; granddaughter, Kim (Gene) Wright Baker; great-grandchildren, Zac and Zane Peters and Kimberly Baker; several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 8, at Forest Hills Cemetery with Dr. Bill Owens officiating.

The family will receive friends from 4 until 8 p.m. today at the funeral home chapel.

Tabatha Foster, 42, of Chattanooga, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2008, at a local hospital.

Willie Fox

Willie Eugene Fox, 76, of Chattanooga, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2008, at his residence.

He was the son of the late Carter and Evelyn Fox. He also was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Rogers Fox.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in the Korean War.

He was the former marketing director of Pepsi Bottling Co. in Chattanooga.

Survivors include his son, Dennis E. Fox, of Gardendale, Ala.; brother, Gerald Fox, of Columbus, Miss.; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held 11:30 a.m. Monday at Chattanooga National Cemetery with the Rev. Philip Anderson officiating. Military rites will be conducted at the cemetery.

There will be no visitation at the funeral home.

Larry Hayes

Larry Dean Hayes, 52, one of God’s Angels, was called home Thursday night, Dec. 4, 2008.

Larry was a longtime student of Orange Grove Center and resident of East Brainerd.

He was a son, brother, friend and above all a heavenly joy to all who met and knew him. He truly was an earthen angel that touched so many lives.

He was preceded in death by his father, A.A. “Bug” Hayes Jr.

He is survived by another angel, his mother, Dottie Hayes; brothers, Mitch and Tim; sisters, Sandy and Connie; nephews, Cody and Devin; numerous aunts, uncles and cousins from Maryville, Tenn., Oklahoma City and Texas.

For those who wish to celebrate Larry’s life, services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Tim Arthur officiating.

Interment will be in Lakewood Memory Gardens, East.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to a Downs Syndrome Research Fund.

Dr. Clifford Hendrix Jr.

Dr. Clifford L. Hendrix Jr., a lifelong Chattanoogan, a proponent of public education, and faithful servant of the Lord, departed this life Thursday, Dec. 4, 2008.

Dr. Hendrix graduated from Howard High School in 1948, and received a bachelor of arts degree in 1953 from Tennessee State University, a master of science degree from Tennessee State University in 1963, and a doctorate of education from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville in 1976. He served in the U.S. Army from 1953 until 1955 when he was honorably discharged, having attained the rank of corporal. Dr. Hendrix was employed by the Chattanooga Public Schools for 38 years. He rose through the ranks of the school system, serving as a teacher, assistant principal, principal, supervisor, director, assistant superintendent and retired as deputy superintendent in 1993. Dr. Hendrix’s commitment to his community, his city and state is evident in his lifetime of tireless service. He was a lifetime member of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity.

For 20 years, Dr. Hendrix served as chairman of the Public Education Panel of the Legislative Black Caucus. He was Inner City Committee chairman of the Downtown Rotary Club. He served on the boards of the Partnership for Families Children and Adults, the Chattanooga Chamber of Commerce, the Urban League, the United Way of Greater Chattanooga, the Metropolitan Council for Community Services, the Tennessee State University Foundation, WTCI Channel 45, the Chattanooga State Community College Advisory Committee, the board of trustees of Orchard Knob Missionary Baptist Church and was co-director of the ministry of education.

Music and theater held a special place in his heart. He served on the boards of the Chattanooga Symphony and Opera and the Chattanooga Theatre Center. Upon retirement, Dr. Hendrix joined the Chattanooga Choral Society for the Preservation of African American Song, with which he joyfully performed until 2004. The respect he held for his community was mutual. In 2004, the community of Chattanooga raised more than $100,000 toward the establishment of a chair of excellence in education at Tennessee State University in Dr. Hendrix’s name.

Dr. Hendrix was preceded in death by his parents, Pluma Cleghorn Hendrix and Clifford L. Hendrix Sr.; a sister, Florene Hendrix Garth; grandparents, Paul Hendrix and Susie Mae Knox Hendrix, Cicero Cleghorn and Laura Chaney Cleghorn; uncles, Arthur Cleghorn, Caldwell Hendrix, Lester Hendrix, Herbert Hendrix, Herman Hendrix, Nathaniel Hendrix, Albert Hendrix, Roy Hendrix, Archie Hendrix; and an aunt, Mildred Hendrix Newman.

He leaves to cherish his memory, beloved wife of 51 years, Bobbie Jones Hendrix; son, Anthony J. Hendrix; daughter, Ellen M. Hendrix; sister, Bernice Green (James); sisters-in-law, Mary L. Johnson (Ralph), Eleanor J. Poteete (Robert), and Janice J. Jones; brothers-in-law, retired Sgt. Warren Thomas Jones, retired Capt. George C. Jones (Carol); nieces, Gina L. Green, Dalise Robinson, Shalise Wrobel, Trinece Holden, Varnar Spencer, Sharon Hudson, Leisha Tutt, Pamela Johnson, Monica Johnson and Michelle Jones; nephews, Stanley Jones, Arthur Maynard, Kenneth Maynard, Eugene Maynard, Derrick Johnson, Jerry Johnson, Warren Jones, Stephen Jones, George Jones; and a special cousin, Malcolm J. Walker. He is lovingly remembered by a host of cousins, countless friends, colleagues and students.

Dr. Hendrix will lie in state after noon on Monday at Taylor Funeral Home, 3417 Wilcox Boulevard.

Funeral services will be at noon Tuesday at Orchard Knob Missionary Baptist Church, 1734 E. Third St., with Pastor Harold K. Lester officiating.

Family hour will commence at 11 a.m. and Alpha Phi Alpha Omega service at 11:45 a.m. Dr. Hendrix’s remains will be interred at Chattanooga National Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Orchard Knob Missionary Baptist Church Ministry of Education or Family Life Center.

Ruby Mae Hickey, 93, of Chattanooga, passed away Thursday, Dec. 4, 2008.

Philip Gulliver Jackson, 78, a resident of Chattanooga for the past 35 years, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, Dec. 4, 2008, at home.

He was born in Cookeville, Tenn.

Survivors include his loving wife of 56 years, Katherine Jackson; children, Venice Miller, Chico Jackson and Romona Dake; and grandchildren, Zach and Zane Wade, Stephanie Gagliardi, Cori Jackson and Mallory Dake.

Philip donated his body to Vanderbilt University.

Ben K. Pickett, 89, of Chattanooga, died Friday evening, Dec. 5, 2008, at his home.

He was retired from Chattanooga Mattress Co., where he was a foreman for over 40 years. He was also an avid sportsman.

He was preceded in death by wife, Gladys Pickett; parents, James and Maude Pickett; four sisters, Pauline Ferry, Bessie Armstrong, Irene Alloway, May Pickett; five brothers, Ewing, Lawrence, Harrison, James and Kay Pickett.

Ruth Standifer

Virginia Ruth Standifer, 77, of Middle Valley, passed away on Saturday, Dec. 6, 2008, after a lengthy illness.

She attended Middle Valley United Methodist Church. Ruth was raised and lived in Sale Creek prior to residing in Middle Valley. She attended McKenzie Business School in Chattanooga and retired from The Chattanooga Times. She also served as a bookkeeper and office manager for World Sales for several years. Her greatest pride was her family.

She was preceded in death by her father and mother, Paul and Helen Coulter, of Sale Creek.

Survivors include her husband of 60 years, Ronald Standifer; sons, Tommy (Sheila) Standifer, of Soddy-Daisy, and Ronnie (Kathy) Standifer, of Middle Valley; grandchildren, Andy, Brian (Toni), Julie and Wesley Standifer; brother, Charles Johnson, of Hixson; sister, Lora Burroughs, of Soddy-Daisy; aunt, Frances Fuller, of Bakewell; along with several nieces and nephews.

Arthur “Art” L. Tatum Jr., 78, of Chattanooga, passed away Thursday, Dec. 4, 2008.

He was born in Valley Head, Ala., son of the late Arthur L. and Gertrude Humble Tatum. He was an Air Force veteran having served in the Korean War and retired from DuPont.

He was a member of First Presbyterian Church. Art was an avid collector of vintage memorabilia and a member of the Scenic City A’s Club.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Hazel McClanahan Tatum.

Survivors are his wife, Nancy Cole Tatum, of Chattanooga; two daughters, Deborah Lehigh and Rebekah (Hugh) Barnes, both of Chattanooga; four grandchildren, Rachel Hunt, Jessica Hunt, John Goldston and Clark Goldston, all of Chattanooga; five stepchildren, Barry (Becky) Cole, of Savannah, Ga., Paul Cole, Linda (Buddy) Childers, Candy (Bobby) Frederick and Mark (Meg) Cole, all of Chattanooga; and six stepgrandchildren; a stepgreat-grandson; two sisters-in-law, June Wallace, of Roseann, Va., and Dorothy Jonas, of Bluefield, Va.; uncle, Charles Humble; several nieces and nephews.

Mattie Taylor

Mattie Laura Hayes Taylor, 87, of Chattanooga, died Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2008, in a local health care facility.

She was a member of Greater Tucker Missionary Baptist Church, where she was a member of the choir and the Naomi Circle.

She worked as a cook at Morrison Cafeteria in Lakeland, Fla.

After moving to Chattanooga, she worked for the Lupton, Pepper and Martin families, as well as Jones Memorial Church. She was a member of the Shepherd Community Council and a volunteer at Hamilton County Nursing Home.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; eight brothers and four sisters.

She leaves to mourn a daughter, Jessie Mae Mitchell, Detroit, Mich.; four grandchildren, Lindia (Derek) Cuyler, Chattanooga, Charles Bradford and Cony (Brenda) Bradford, Detroit, and Rachel Thomas, Chattanooga; 10 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 8, 2008, at Greater Tucker Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. M.T. Billingsley officiating.

Burial will be at Chattanooga National Cemetery.

Irene Keeton Walters, 100, of Ooltewah, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Friday, Dec. 5, 2008, peacefully at her home.

She was a longtime member of Concord Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Clifford Walters; parents, Robert and Mary Keeton, along with several brothers and sisters.

She is survived by a brother, William Keeton, of Athens, Ga.; niece, Tina Johnson and her husband, Jack Johnson, of Ooltewah; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at the East Brainerd Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home with the Rev. Tony Walliser officiating.

SOUTH PITTSBURG — Charlotte Ann Davis, 56, passed away Friday, Dec. 5, 2008.

She was preceded in death by her father, James Floyd Davis Sr.; brothers, James Floyd Davis Jr. and Chris W. Davis; and a niece, Sandra Kay Davis.

She is survived her mother, Virginia Jo Davis; siblings, Mary Jo Thomas, Daisy L. Sisk, Bobby G. Davis and Sammy Davis and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. CST Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2008, from the funeral home chapel.

Interment will follow in Sequatchie Valley Memorial Gardens.

Virgie Ferguson

SPRING CITY — Virgie Harrison Ferguson, 102, died Thursday, Dec. 4, 2008, at Athens Regional Medical Center in Athens, Tenn.

Born in Spring City, she was the daughter of the late James Hampton and Joanne Fisher Harrison. Virgie was a graduate of Spring City High School and worked as a secretary for Southern Silk Mill for many years before her retirement. She and her husband, Haywood, also owned and operated Ferguson’s Grocery for many years. Virgie was a member of Spring City United Methodist Church as well as being an active member in numerous civil organizations.

Her husband, John Haywood Ferguson; sisters, Margie Higgs and Mary Ruth Scheureman and brothers, James W. Harrison and Joe Clark Harrison, preceded Virgie in death.

Survivors include her sisters, Edith George, of Merritt Island, Fla., Helen Abbott, of Little Rock, Ark., Opal Henley, of Athens, Tenn., and Hazel Hurst, of Florida; sister-in-law, Inez Harrison, of Lebanon, Tenn. and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today in the chapel of Vaughn Funeral Home with the Rev. Dale Wyrick officiating.

Burial will be in Spring City Cemetery.

WHITWELL — Ricky Gene Rankin, 54, passed away Saturday, Dec. 6, 2008.

He attended Grace Baptist Church in Dunlap, Tenn.

He was preceded in death by grandparents, Ethel and Elzie Kilgore, Robert and Abbie Harris.

Survivors include his parents, Harry and Opal Rankin, of Whitwell; son, Ricky D. Rankin, of Dunlap; several cousins and a host of friends.

WHITWELL — Hershel 0. Rollins, 75, passed away Saturday, Dec. 6, 2008.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Geraldine Rollins; son, Roger Rollins; parents, Jim and Lucy Rollins; brothers, Walter and Clarence Rollins.

He was a member of the Griffith Creek Congregational Methodist Church and a veteran of the U.S. Army.

CLEVELAND — Edmond L. Welch Jr., 57, died Monday, Nov. 17, 2008.

Johnny Anderson

RINGGOLD — Johnny Marion Anderson, 81, went home to be with his Lord on Friday, Dec. 5, 2008.

He was the son of the late Eugene and Estelle Rose Anderson.

He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend. He will be greatly missed by many. He was a lifelong resident of the North Georgia area, a member of Midway Baptist Church and served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He was preceded in death by stepmother, Lennie Anderson; brother, Victor (Madia) Anderson; and grandson, Stephen Palmer Jr.

He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Barbara “Bobbie” Clark Anderson, of Ringgold; sons and daughters, Gene (Barbara) Anderson, of Ringgold, Jimmy (Debi) Anderson, of Ringgold, Steve (Vicki) Anderson, of Ringgold, Stella (Jerry) Rozzell, of East Ridge, Lisa (Steve) Palmer, of Ringgold, and Keena (Willie) Hodge, of East Ridge; beloved nephew, Jay (Cathy) Anderson; three sisters, Evelyn (Buddy) Ellis, of Ooltewah, Marilyn (Lester) Barnes, of Ringgold, and Betty Sue Anderson, of Ringgold; 20 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Monday in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Jackie Swanson and the Rev. Roy Johnson officiating.

Interment will follow at Anderson Cemetery.

Michael Bull

ATLANTA — Michael W. Bull passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2008.

Mike was brilliant with computers and computer programs, and he loved to teach. His clients loved him and he touched many lives. Mike loved his dogs, Thelma and Louise. His former puppies, Hudson and Sonny met him at the bridge. He was a loving son, brother and uncle, known as “Our Meeko.”

He is survived by his parents, Charles “Bunky” and Belitje Bull, of Sea Island, Ga.; brother, Tom Oastler and his wife, Cyndy, of Atlanta; sisters, Elaine Blackmon, of Dunwoody, Ga., Elizabeth Jackson and husband, Rex, of St. Simmons Island, and Lisa Killingsworth and husband, Chris, of Marietta, Ga.; and several nieces, nephews; and a great-nephew.

A memorial service will be Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2008, at Patterson’s Canton Hill Chapel.

SUMMERVILLE — Lowzernie Calsaw, 82, died Friday, Dec. 5, 2008, in Shepard Hill Nursing Home.

Survivors: daughter, Shelia Logan: sister, Viola Brown; grandchildren, Amy and Steve Tomlin, Scott and Missy Spurgeon.

Mr. Calsaw was cremated and a memorial service will be held at a later date.

Rev. Charles Ford

TRENTON — The Rev. Charles William (Jack) Ford, 72, died Friday, Dec. 5, 2008.

Rev. Ford pastored churches in the Trenton area for over 35 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charlie F. and Sibyl F. Howard Ford; sister, Carma Lita Clayton; and brother, David Ford.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Laquada O’Dell Ford, of Trenton; five daughters, Deborah (Rick) Liles, Teresa Hoover, Joyce (Jimmy) Hurst, Marsha (Alvin) Marshall, all of Trenton, and Marlene (Jimmy) Youngs, of Tunnel Hill, Ga.; one foster daughter, Margaret Disheroon, of East Ridge; one son, Randall Ford, of Trenton; two sisters, Mary Shraum, of East Ridge, Jewell Rice, of Trenton; two brothers, Robert Ford, Kenneth Ford, both of Trenton; 18 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. EST Monday in the Ryan Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Anthony Disheroon officiating.

Interment will be in the Jack Ford family cemetery.

Edward Roberson

RINGGOLD — Edward Joe Roberson, 79, passed away Saturday, Dec. 6, 2008, at a local hospital.

A resident of the Ringgold area for most of his life, he was owner and operator of Roberson Body Shop for 29 years.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Johnnie Mae Headrick Roberson; and parents, Joseph and Eula Mae Brumbelow Roberson.

He is survived by daughter and son-in-law, Ann and Maurice Knight, of Ringgold; two sons and daughter-in-law, Dan Roberson, of Ringgold, and Michael and Andrea Roberson, of Ringgold; two sisters, Betty Jo McKeown and Ruth Flinn; brother, Kenneth Roberson; two grandchildren, Travis Knight and Lauren Knight, both of Ringgold; several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held 1 p.m. Monday at Catoosa Memorial Gardens with Brother Thurman Headrick officiating.

The family will receive friends from 2-8 p.m. today and Monday until 12:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

Annie Shields

ROCK SPRING — Annie Laurie “Boots” Bowman Shields went to be with the Lord on Friday, Dec. 5, 2008.

She was born in Chattanooga and was 98 years old.

She graduated from Ringgold High School and attended West Georgia College and graduated from Oglethorpe University. She taught school in Walker County for 40 years, where she impacted the lives of many. During her tenure, she represented North LaFayette Elementary twice as Walker County Teacher of the Year. Upon retiring from teaching, she was a charter member of the Walker County Retired Teachers, which is now known as Retired Educators. She was a member of Peavine Baptist Church for over 70 years, where she taught Sunday School for many years. She was also a member of the LaFayette Crochet Club.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph “Bony” Shields; her parents, Oscar and Cora Eskew Bowman; sisters, Lucille Lansford, Alma Boyd, Frankie Parker; and brothers, Joe, Dan and Sam Bowman.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Micki and Grady Smith, of Rock Spring; three granddaughters, Laurie Smith, of Atlanta, Annie (Ken) Rolston, of Norcross, Ga., and Sallie Smith, of Atlanta; two sisters-in-law, Rachel Bowman and Lillian Bowman and several nieces and nephews.

Special thanks to her caregivers, Sherri Ramey, Sharron Cockrell, and Doris Hightower and to Tyria Chadwick and Countryside Hospice.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Peavine Baptist Church with the Rev. Ricky Studdard, the Honorable Ralph Hill, and Dr. Stephen Anthony officiating.

Pallbearers will be nephews. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Fellowship Sunday School Class, the LaFayette Crochet Club and the Retired Educators.

Interment will be in the Rock Spring Cemetery.

Daris Wingo

FLINTSTONE — Daris Phillips Wingo, 70, passed away Friday, Dec. 5, 2008.

She was born in Jackson County, Ala., on Dec. 3, 1938, to the late, Robert and Alma Bailey Phillips. She had lived in Flintstone, Ga., since 1976 and was a member of Freehill Baptist Church in Rosalie, Ala. She retired from Town & Country Restaurant in 2004 after more than 30 years of service.

She also was preceded in death by her husband, James “Kent” Wingo; brother, Milford Phillips; sisters, Margie Shankles and Rebecca Smith; and great-granddaughter, Isabell Black.

Survivors include her daughters, Margaret (Jack David) Gamble, of Flintstone, Susan Laney Black, of Rosalie, and Norma (Terry) Lee, of Spencer, Tenn.; sisters, Erlene (Bob) Sargent, of Fort Oglethorpe, and Wanda “Oma” (Milton) Joiner, of Rosalie; brothers, Franklin (Marie) Phillips, of Rossville, Melvin “Bill” (Dorothy) Phillips, Eugene “Gene” (Cathy) Phillips and Glenn (Donna) Phillips, all of Scottsboro, Ala.; grandsons, Jason (Annette) Black and Nathan and Ethan Gamble; great-granddaughter, Abigale Black; stepgreat-grandchildren, Lindsay and Austin Black; aunt, Dean (Alton) Oliver; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws and many dear friends.

EDGEWATER, Fla. — Everett C. “Bud” Farmer, 54, died Thursday, Nov. 20, 2008, at this home.

Bud was born in Chattanooga and moved to Edgewater 30 years ago. He enjoyed gardening and shopping and collecting antiques.

Survivors include two sons, Jason and Travis; his mother, Imogene Farmer; brother, Bill Farmer; three sisters, Belinda King, Pat Webb and Cathy Luttman; his former wife and longtime companion, Sue Holland.
