Fay Cook

Fay Wright Cook passed away on Saturday, Dec. 6, 2008.

She was preceded in death by parents, Zora and Tom W. Wright; brother, Jack Wright; sisters, Hazel Marshall and Helen Hixson.

She is survived by her husband, Bill Cook; daughter, Dorene Fine; son, James Fine Jr.; sisters, Geraldine Ragsdale and Jeanette Watts.

Ollie Davis Jr.

Ollie Wofford Davis Jr., 72, of Chattanooga, passed away Monday, Dec. 8, 2008 at his residence.

A lifelong resident of Chattanooga, Mr. Davis had worked for the Catoosa County Road Department in the 1960s and he was a dairy farmer working for Foster Farms and Richie Dairies. Mr. Davis was also a member of the 700 Club.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Johnnie Davis; sister, Louise Self; and son-in-law, Stephen Hawkins.

Survivors include two daughters and son-in-law, Sue Hawkins, of Chattanooga and Patricia Ann and Mike Hewitt, of Biloxi, Miss.; and son and daughter-in-law, Johnny Lloyd Davis Sr. and Trish; brother, Jessie Lloyd Davis, of North Carolina; sister, Betty Jones, of East Ridge; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Tabatha Foster

Tabatha L. Foster, 42, formerly of Kensington, Ga., and graduate from Chattanooga Valley High passed away Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2008, in a local hospital.

Ms. Foster was the daughter of Ecclesiates "Cleaster" and Bettie Foster.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, William McKinley and Maggie Foster, John and Janie Upshaw Mathis.

Survivors include her angels; children, Jamila, Jamilan, Joseph and Xaviera Foster; one sister, Janie Foster Earls; one brother, Cleaster Foster; and a host of nieces and one nephew; one great-niece; two great-nephews; and numerous aunts, uncle, cousin and friends.

Funeral services will be 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 11, 2008, at Reuben Strickland Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Raymond Moore officiating.

Wake 6-7 p.m. today at Reuben Strickland Memorial Chapel.

Charles Gibson

Charles R. "Hoot" Gibson, 61, of Gainesville, Ga. died Thursday, Dec. 4, 2008, in a Gainesville hospital.

A Staff SGT. (PJ), in the U.S. Air Force and the leader of his team, Hoot rescued downed pilots and others in Vietnam. He was loved by all. Hoot's generosity of heart for his country defined him as a leader. This was paralleled by his love for his wife and family.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Marvin and Emma Cline; father, George Gibson; and brother, Larry Gibson.

He is survived by his wife, Vivian, of Gainesville; son, Richard Gibson; mother, Dorothy Gibson; sister, Helen Woodall; nephew, Chad Woodall, all of Chattanooga; granddaughter, Alicia Gibson, Rossville.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Disabled American Veterans.

Memorial services will be held 2:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 12, 2008, in Chattanooga National Cemetery.

Hugh Gordon

Hugh Gordon departed this life Thursday, Dec. 4, 2008.

He was born Dec. 27, 1921 in Athens, Ga. He retired from Ross Mehan after 40 years of service. He was a faithful member of Olivet Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Nellie Gordon; wife, Tallie L.. Gordon; two sons, Richard and Reginald Gordon; one brother, Will Henry Gordon; sister-in-law, Juanita Gordon, niece, Phyllis Gordon; and special dear friend, Hazel Addison.

He leaves to cherish, sister, Beatrice Thrasher, Athens, Ga.; one brother , John A. Gordon, of New York; one sister-in-law, Geneva Gordon, Chattanooga; four sons, Fredrick (Anna) Gordon, Danny R. (Shirley) Gordon, Waytha Gordon, Decatur, Ga., and Michael Gordon, California; two daughters, Katrina Gordon and Evangelist Patricia Terry; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; six nephews; two nieces, great-nieces and nephews; other relatives and a host of friends.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Dec. 11, 2008, at 1 p.m. at Olivet Baptist Church with Pastor Kevin Adams officiating.

Bessie Gravitt

Bessie P. Gravitt, 86, of Chattanooga, passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2008.

Mrs. Gravitt was born in Hamilton County, to Charlie and Josie Carter. She was a member of Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert C. Gravitt and her parents.

Survivors include her daughter, Pat Sobol and her husband, Bob, of Sun Lakes, Ariz.; son, Ken Gravitt and his wife, Della, of East Ridge; three grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and sister, Joyce Padgett, of Chattanooga.

Funeral services will be at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home with the Rev. Dale Gilbert officiating.

Burial will follow at Chattanooga National Cemetery.

Lisa Johnson

Lisa Emma Johnson, 33, died Saturday, Dec. 6, 2008.

She lived a selfless life of joy and love, which she shared to everyone with whom she came in contact.

She is survived by her husband, Michael Johnson; children, Tyler, Orion and Greta; parents, Daniel White and Janelle Steele; sisters, Jessica Tanner and Dava Heyen; brother, Eric Landry; grandmothers, Marjorie White and Emily Peddy; an uncle, Arlie Peddy; aunts, Barbara Arthur, Betsy Dahlstrom, Dava Lange and Cydnie Rothstein; a niece, three nephews, and many cousins. She will be sorely missed by her family and friends.

Lisa was employed at the Comedy Catch and had a special love for the owners and her fellow staff members.

The funeral service is noon Friday, Dec. 12, at the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, 404 S. Moore Road, Chattanooga.

Burial will follow at Silverdale Cemetery on Cemetery Road, with the Rev. Dr. Mark Gooden officiating.

James Lane Sr.

James Martin Lane Sr., 75, passed away Monday, Dec. 8, 2008, at his home.

Mr. Lane was a lifelong resident of Chattanooga and a graduate of Notre Dame High School Class of 1953. He was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, having served during the Korean Conflict. He was retired from the Chattanooga Fire Dept. after 20 years, and was a member of the Knights of Columbus.

He is survived by his wife of almost 52 years, Berenice Maycann Lane, Chattanooga; children, James M. Lane Jr., Soddy-Daisy, Cheryl A. (Randy) Blevins, Birchwood, Michael A. (Sandy) Lane, Ringgold, Thomas A. (Karla) Lane, Knoxville; brother, Julian L. Lane Jr., Stuart, Fla.; sister, Louise (Tom) Shaver, East Ridge; grandchildren, Nicholas Lane, Eric Lane, Ethan Lane, Harry Wright, Bill Wright, Christine Austin, Tommy Lane and Alston Lane.

Graveside services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at Chattanooga National Cemetery with Father Mike Nolan officiating.

Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Herschel McKee

Herschel Lee "Fluffy" McKee, 60, of Ooltewah, passed away Monday, Dec. 8, 2008, at a local hospital.

He was the son of the late Raymond and Jennie Bell McKee and was preceded in death by two sisters, Delores Ray McKee, Barbara Jean Leamon; and a granddaughter, Brie Harvill.

He was a member of Old Rugged Cross Baptist Church where he served as the director of music and as a Sunday school teacher.

He was the owner and operator of TN-GA Auto Auction in Ringgold and was an avid car collector and old car enthusiast. He was greatly loved by his family and friends.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara McKee; four children, Michelle Painter, of Rossville, Scott McKee, of Chickamauga, Ga., Donna Roberts, of Wilmington, N.C., Sulicia Pettyjohn, Lafayette, Ga.; five siblings, Wilma McDaniel, of Chattanooga, Charles McKee, of Calhoun, Ga., Geraldine Burkhart, Hixson, Ray McKee, David McKee, both of Ooltewah; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 2:30 p.m. Friday in the Valley View Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home with Dr. Jack Rinks officiating.

David Randolph Jr.

David C. "Butch Cornell" Randolph Jr., 67, of Chattanooga passed away Sunday, Dec. 7, 2008, at Parkridge East Hospital.

Butch was of the Baptist faith and attended Prospect Baptist Church. Butch was also a renowned Jazz Musician and composer. Butch played both the organ and piano.

He was preceded in death by his father, David C. Randolph Sr.; brother, Benny Randolph; daughter, Robin Carter.

He is survived his mother, Katherine Davis Randolph; sons, David Randolph III, Patrick Randolph, Sulaiman Randolph; daughters, Jamila Randolph Battle, Samira Randolph, Cathy Randolph, Cynthia Randolph, Pamela Randolph, Daphne Scott. Several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be noon Friday at Prospect Baptist Church with the Rev. Jay Trimble officiating.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to noon on Friday at the Church.

Ruby Rodgers, 81, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, Dec. 5, 2008.

She was a faithful member for over 56 years at Stephens Temple Cumberland Presbyterian Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Eddie Lee and Elizabeth Ford; and brother, Charlie Ed Ford.

She is survived by a loving and devoted husband, Earl Rodgers; stepdaughter, Caroline (Wallace) Cooper; two granddaughters; and great-grandchild, of Oklahoma City, Okla.; brother, Wilford (Pauline) Ford, Chattanooga; sister, Hazel Otey, Meridianville, Ala.; devoted niece, Velma Jean Adams; godchild, Emoni Patton; brother and sister-in-laws; special cousins, Houston and Mary Conley, Mitchellville, Md.; and a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins, church family and devoted friends.

She was retired from the city of Chattanooga Human Services Department and served for many years as precinct chairwoman of Avondale.

Services will be at noon Thursday, Dec. 11, 2008, at Stephens Temple Church with the Rev. Ernest Jefferson officiating.

Interment will be at National Cemetery.

Stephen Sanders

Stephen Lee Sanders, 51, of Signal Mountain, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2008, at his home.

He was of the Methodist faith. He loved boating and was an Alabama football fan. He was a basketball player at UAB when they won the National Championship.

He is survived by his loving wife, Judy Sanders; sons, Clay "Amanda" Sanders, Matthew "Abby" Sanders; parents, Robert and Bobbie Sanders, of Signal Mountain; sisters, Jeanne Swortout, Janie Vega; niece, Gracie.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Thursday in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Mark Gooden officiating.

Benton Bryan Sexton, 81, of Chattanooga, passed away Monday, Dec. 8, 2008.

He had attended Kelly's Ferry Church of God. He was retired from Combustion Engineering and operated a backhoe and bulldozing business.

Mr. Sexton was preceded in death by his wife, Lillie Sexton; and a brother, Agnew Sexton.

Survivors include his daughter, Connie Griffitts, of Chattanooga; two stepdaughters, Ann Miller, of Signal Mountain and Louise Robinson, of Fort Oglethorpe; one granddaughter, Rebekah Griffitts, of Chattanooga; eight stepgrandchildren; several stepgreat-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; one sister, June Payne, of Chattanooga; one aunt, Marie McNabb, of Chattanooga.

Jimmy Shipley

Jimmy A. Shipley, 60, of Hixson, entered the Lord's Courts on Monday, Dec. 8, 2008.

"Better is one day in His courts than thousands elsewhere." Jimmy states he lived a wonderful life. In his words, "I have been blessed with a beautiful and wonderful wife and best friend. I have been married to the most wonderful woman, Sheila Shipley (formerly Carpenter) for over 39 years. We have had three wonderful sons and two wonderful daughter-in-laws. I am proud of my beautiful grandchildren: Taylor, Rell, Skylar, Riley, Abbey, Elaina, Hannah and Josie. I am so grateful to the wonderful family that I married into and the wonderful friends I have had throughout my life. I could not have had a better family or better friends."

Jimmy is survived by his wife, Sheila; son, Travis and Tara, Signal Mountain; son, Heath, of Soddy-Daisy; son, Aaron and Jenny, of Hixson; sister, Pam Melton, of South Carolina; grandchildren; brothers and sisters-in-law, father-in-law, Carl Carpenter. He also is survived by many nieces and nephews and his extended family of Brandi Thompson and Randy and Sonja Dean.

Jimmy joined his father and mother, Willard and Prudie Shipley and the mother-in-law he adored Oneida Carpenter.

"I am ready, I know I am saved, I know I am going to Heaven. Don't worry about me, I know where I am going,"- Jim Shipley.

Jim served in the U.S. Navy from 1967-1971.

The service will be in the Coulter Chapel of Lane Funeral Home Thursday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Sam Phillips and Dr. Travis Shipley (son) officiating.

Jim will be laid to rest at Hamilton Memorial Gardens.

Jim was loved by many and especially loved by those he worked with at Remax Properties North in Hixson, and by many he worked with at DuPont for over 32 years.

Kenneth Talley

Kenneth Lamar Talley, 69, of Soddy-Daisy, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2008, in an area healthcare facility.

Kenneth was the owner and operator of Lakesite Bait and Tackle for several years. He was a loving father and grandfather and will be greatly missed.

He is survived by his son, Steven Talley, of Soddy-Daisy; daughter, Karen (John) Scott, of Honolulu, Hawaii; brother, Wayne Talley, of Ocala, Fla.; grandchildren, Nathan, Brandy, Jeb, Sara, John and Jasmine; and four great-grandchildren.

Brenda White

Brenda Gale Paul White, 54, of Chattanooga, passed away on Monday, Dec. 8, 2008, at a local hospital.

A 1972 graduate of Tyner High School, she was a homemaker and served on the board of The Greater Chattanooga Kidney Foundation.

A sweet lady passed away Monday morning. Brenda was the kind of person who could wear a knit hat when necessary and look good doing it. Anyone who came into Brenda's home felt very welcome to be there and reluctant to leave her warmth. The strength and courage she showed everyone will be a continual statement to the woman she was. We have all lost a soft person who probably made us all look better through God's eyes.

She was preceded in death by her father, Kenneth Paul; and her grandparents.

NEW HOPE -- Sherman L. Blevins, 67, died Monday, Dec. 8, 2008, from injuries received in an automobile accident.

The son of the late Luther Benjamin and Bertha Lillian Hogan Blevins, he was of the Baptist faith and was a member of Ironworkers Local #704.

He loved watching his daughter play sports.

She was born in Wildwood, Ga., to the late John Landrum and Ola Beatrice Pitts Gwin, and was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard Douglas; and her aunts, Lorena and Dee Pitts.

Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Bret and Angie Douglas, of Cohutta, Ga.; and grandchildren, Jonathan and Sarah Douglas.

Services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 11, 2008, in the chapel with the Rev. Terry Burns officiating.

Interment will follow in Lookout Cemetery.

Clara Emerson

MACON -- Clara Maie Emerson, passed away Tuesday morning, Dec. 9, 2008, at a local hospital.

Mrs. Emerson was preceded in death by her husbands, Al Emerson and Albert Hugh Dudley. She was born in Dickson, Tenn., on May 27, 1915, the daughter of the late George Wesley Clifton and Willie Sears Clifton. Mrs. Emerson was retired from Robins Air Force Base after 25 years and was a member of the Order of Eastern Star. She was a member of Mabel White Baptist Church for more than 50 years where she was also a member of the Faith Bible Class.

Survivors include her brother, Wilburn Ardell (Chrystabelle) Clifton, of Signal Mountain; her niece, Judith Clifton (Martin) Rice, of Signal Mountain; and her nephew, Wesley A. "Sonny" (Gail) Clifton, of Signal Mountain.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Snow's Memorial Chapel, Pio Nono Avenue with the Rev. Joe McDaniel.

Burial will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in Union Cemetery, Dickson, Tenn.

The family will meet friends from noon to service time Thursday and suggests that memorial contributions be made to Mabel White Baptist Church Building Fund, 1415 Bass Road, Macon, GA 31210.

RINGGOLD -- Ovvie Eric Hanna, 92, of Manchester, Tenn., passed away Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2008, at a local hospital.

A resident of Manchester for the past 17 years he was formerly of Laurel, Miss. Mr. Hanna was a Pastor for the Seventh-day Adventist Church for 28 years, was a graduate of Southern Adventist University in 1951, a member of Murfreesboro Seventh-day Adventist Church and a veteran of the U.S. Air Force.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Cora Jarrell Hanna; grandson, James Hanna; brothers, Gwinn, Ivey and James Hanna; and sisters, Virginia Hanna and Lessie.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Johnnie Fay Warren Hanna, of Manchester, Tenn.; four children, Dale Hanna, of Ringgold, Ga., Ronald Hanna, of Beechgrove, Tenn., Anthony Hanna, of Nashville, and Gloria Teasley, of Rossville; sister, Ila Livingston, of Heldelberg, Miss.; brother, Euel Hanna, of Ider, Ala..; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home chapel with Pastor Mike Lombardo and Pastor John Cooper officiating.

Interment will follow at Anderson Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends today from 3-8 p.m. and until funeral time Thursday at the funeral home.

Survivors include her son, Walter (Alice) Henderson, Rossville; daughters, Zelphia "JoAnn" Binford, Chattanooga and Delma (Kelley) Sanders, Rossville, and Wanda Goodloe, Chattanooga; 22 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren; brothers, James Steele, Arthur (Shirley) Steele, both of Chattanooga and Walter Steele, Tulsa, Okla.; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

RINGGOLD -- Elizabeth Mae Williams Jones, 81, passed away at her home Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2008.

She was born in Virginia but had lived in Ringgold since 1953. She was a member of Boynton United Methodist Church. She loved the genealogy of her family and wrote a book on her family history. She was a veteran of the U.S. Army, WAC Corp. where she served for two terms. She later worked for Candlewick Yarns for 10 years before retiring from the U.S. Post Office as a mail carrier.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Rachell Williams; son, Roland Jones; sister, Martha Lahnen.

Survivors include her husband of 55 years, Richard Jones; sons and daughter-in-laws, Rodney and Sandy Jones, of Atlanta, and Allen and Phyllis Jones, of Ringgold; brothers, Tom and Sonny Williams; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be 9:30 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 11, 2008, in the funeral home chapel.

Interment following in Chattanooga National Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. today, Dec. 10, 2008, and prior to the service Thursday.
