A UAW local president at a General Motors Corp. plant in Spring Hill says Republican U.S. Sen. Bob Corker is "playing politics with 110,000 jobs in Tennessee" by opposing the auto industry rescue package.
UAW Local 1853 President Mike O'Rourke said Thursday the 110,000 jobs include about 3,000 active members between people building cars and skilled trades in Middle Tennessee and related jobs across the state.
O'Rourke says the $14 billion package approved Wednesday by the U.S. House is "2 percent of the money they gave to the banks."
Corker's office did not immediately return a telephone message seeking comment.
Corker is pushing an alternate measure that would force U.S. automakers to reduce debt and slash wages and benefits to bring them in line with Japanese carmakers.
