Early-morning tipoffs are not conducive to sharp shooters, but the Grace Academy boys’ basketball team woke up and found its range in the second half, pulling away for a 79-68 win over host Arts & Sciences in the consolation round of the Best of Preps tournament.
“It felt like one of those summer-camp games with the early tip,” Grace coach Jon Mattheiss said. “I think it took a while for everybody to get going, but I was proud of the way we responded to our first loss of the season.”
Terrell Church led all scorers with 24 points and Brandon Herman added 19 as Grace (8-1) outscored CSAS 42-32 in the second half.
n Ridgeland 70, McCallie 64: In the other boys’ consolation game, Ridgeland’s Dewaun Harrison made seven first-quarter 3-pointers and totaled 32 points as the Panthers defeated McCallie. Derrick Sanders added 16 points for Ridgeland, and David Alexander followed with 10.
n Chattanooga Christian girls 52, Grundy County 45: Despite giving up nine 3-pointers, the Lady Chargers won their consolation game over their District 6-AA opponent, and the victory puts them in the fifth-place game this morning at 11:30. Presley Watson led CCS with 13 points, and Chauncey Simmons scored 10.
n Baylor girls 39, Grace Academy 35: A 10-4 fourth-quarter run led the Lady Red Raiders to victory. Katy Wilson finished with 10 points for Baylor, and Kiera Payne added 9.
