ATHENS, Ga. — It took Georgia’s football program 110 years to produce its first 1,000-yard receiver.
It may take just six years to produce a second. And a third.
Fabulous freshman A.J. Green and savvy senior Mohamed Massaquoi each is within reach of the milestone heading into the Capital One Bowl on New Year’s Day. Green needs 49 yards to reach 1,000, while Massaquoi needs 90, an amount he doubled in his last game against Georgia Tech.
“It would be pretty neat, especially since there has only been one in Georgia history,” Massaquoi said. “It would be awesome to get two guys in one year.”
Terrence Edwards became Georgia’s first 1,000-yard receiver with 1,004 yards in 2002. Edwards and Fred Gibson entered this season as the top receiving tandem in school history, combining for 1,762 yards and 15 touchdowns in ’02, but Green and Massaquoi already have 1,861 yards and 16 scores.
Green leads the Southeastern Conference with 951 yards on 55 catches, while Massaquoi is second with 910 on 57. Each has eight touchdowns, with Massaquoi getting three against the Yellow Jackets.
“It’s a testament to those guys,” quarterback Matthew Stafford said. “Mohamed, everybody knows, has had an outstanding year, and it goes unseen sometimes just how much he has helped A.J. out. The ability A.J. has is obvious, and going out there and making plays as a true freshman like he does is impressive.
“It would be cool, and I would love to be the guy throwing the ball to two 1,000-yard receivers in the same year.”
Florida is the only SEC team ever to produce two 1,000-yard receivers in the same season, and the Gators have done it twice. Chris Doering (1,045) and Ike Hilliard (1,008) became the first duo to do it in 1995, and they were joined in 2001 by Jabar Gaffney (1,191) and Reche Caldwell (1,059).
Bulldogs coach Mark Richt envisioned having two 1,000-yard receivers, but he envisioned it when he came into the conference eight years ago.
“It just doesn’t happen very often in our league, and I think it goes back to matchups,” Richt said. “Every offensive coach is trying to get a guy matched up on a defender who can’t cover his guy. In some leagues, the offensive personnel is so strong that there are mismatches. In our league, there are so many strong defenders that if you put a third receiver out there, they’ve got a pretty good third corner who can hang with him.
“Another reason is that, over the years, the Southeastern Conference has had some of the finest pass rushers in the country, and I think there have been more mismatches with a defensive end on a tackle than a tackle on a defensive end. I think that’s been part of it, too.”
Green made the quicker splash this season, torching Arizona State for 159 yards and a touchdown on eight receptions. He had 132 yards against Vanderbilt and caught winning touchdowns in back-to-back weeks at Kentucky and Auburn.
His 55 receptions are the most for a freshman in school history.
Massaquoi had a 100-yard game against Tennessee (103) before adding others against Florida (112), Kentucky (191) and Georgia Tech (180). He has caught a pass in 33 straight games and has 157 career catches for 2,272 yards and 16 touchdowns.
“They’re playing great,” Stafford said. “It’s awesome to think back over the great plays they’ve made and some really big games they’ve had that have really helped us out.”
Odds and ends
The Bulldogs practiced Saturday morning for the final time in Athens, working out for an hour, and will next practice Friday night in Orlando. ... Richt said freshmen Blair Walsh and Jamie Lindley have been competing at kicking off but that Walsh will continue handling that in the bowl. ... Junior defensive tackle Kade Weston was limited in practice Saturday due to a sore knee but should be fine in Orlando.
