Katherine Akridge

Katherine Akridge, 87, of Signal Mountain, passed away peacefully on Friday, Dec. 26, 2008, at her residence.

She was a retired office manager, member of Signal Mountain United Methodist Church, and a loving grandmother.

She was preceded in death by: husband, Robert Box Akridge; and sons, Robert and Radford Akridge.

Katherine is survived by grandsons, Chris (Abby) Akridge and Andrew Akridge; and longtime cousins and friends, Gin Boteler and Katie Lacey.

Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. CST Wednesday, Dec. 31, at Elmwood Cemetery in Birmingham, Ala., with the Rev. J.N. Howard officiating.

Trula Bales

Trula C. Bales, 92, of Chattanooga, went home to be with the Lord Sunday evening, Dec. 28, 2008, at home surrounded by her loving family.

A lifelong resident of the Chattanooga area, she was a member of East Chattanooga Church of God for over 50 years where she served as Sunday school secretary for 20 years. She was retired from the Credit Bureau with 15 years of service and was the wife of the late Eugene Bales.

She also was preceded in death by two sisters and four brothers.

Survivors includes one son and his wife, F.E. "Buddy" and Sue Bales, Harrison; two daughters and their husbands, Rebecca and Harold Chapman, Chickamauga, Ga., and Nancy and Don Bridgeman, Chattanooga; four grandchildren, Gregory Chapman, Kimberly Shepherd, Bryan Bales and Matthew Bridgeman; six great-grandchildren, John and James Chapman, Jake and Sydney Shepherd and Dakota and Brandon Bales.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Fred Smith officiating.

Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery.

Jerald Lavon Brown, 68, of Signal Mountain, passed away Sunday, Dec. 21, 2008, in a local hospital.

Arney Austin Choate, 98, of Red Bank, died Sunday, Dec. 28, 2008, at his home.

He was a WWII Army veteran, retired from 3-M and attended Mountain Creek Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Pauline; daughter, Brenda Martin; sister, Johnnie Aline Mullinax; brothers, Truman and Charles Choate; grandsons, Reece (Sandy) Martin and Kevin Martin; great-grandsons, Matthew, Taylor, Dylan and Brian Martin; great-granddaughter, Savannah Martin; several nieces and nephews.

Melvin "Bubba" Dickens Jr., 64, of Chattanooga, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2008, in a local hospital.

Nancy Golden

Nancy Bradford Golden, 49, originally from Chattanooga and recently of Harrisburg, N.C. passed away on Friday, Dec. 26, 2008.

She was a member of University City United Methodist Church and a former longtime member of Christ UMC.

Nancy will be remembered as a loving and giving wife, mother, daughter and sister.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Ted and Betty Bradford and Flora Womac.

Nancy is survived by husband, Bob Golden; sons, Criss, Craig, and Corey Golden; parents, Franklin and Charlsie Bradford; sister, Gail (Larry) Phillips; brother, Gary (Carol) Bradford; and nieces and nephews, Jennifer Phillips, Nick (Elizabeth) Bradford, Katie Phillips, Jeremy Bradford, and Joel Bradford.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today, Dec. 30, at Christ United Methodist Church with the Rev. David Hall and the Rev. Don Allison officiating.

The body will lie in state for one hour prior to the service at the church.

Cecil Vessl Gray, 82, of Warner Robins, Ga., passed away Saturday, Dec. 27, 2008, in a local hospital.

He was a U. S. Navy veteran.

Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, John and Catherine Gray, of Warner Robins; daughter and son-in-law, Holly J. and Ralph Mannis, of Kathleen, Ga.; sister, Joyce McMillen, of Tiftonia; grandchildren, John Gray Jr., Ralph Mannis Jr. and Chris Mannis; great-grandchildren, Kayla, Nina and Logan Mannis and Aiden Gray.

Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday in the North Chapel with the Rev. Jackie Swanson officiating.

Russell Heddendorf

Russell Howard Heddendorf passed away suddenly on Wednesday, Dec. 24, 2008, in Philadelphia, Pa.

He was born on June 11. 1930 on Long Island, N.Y., and graduated from Queens College in New York City. He received his Ph.D. in sociology after graduate study at Columbia University and the University of Pittsburgh.

Following his Army service in Korea and Japan during the Korean War, Russ married Eleanor Pearce in 1954.

Russ devoted much of his life to teaching, with appointments at Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pa.; Geneva College in Beaver Falls, Pa.; and Covenant College on Lookout Mountain, Ga. Countless students remember his love of sociology and teaching, and his dedication to integrating sociology and the Christian faith. In addition to founding the Association of Christians Teaching Sociology (ACTS), He was the author of two books and numerous journal articles. He retired from Covenant College in 2000, remaining active in teaching and writing. Most recently, he taught part-time at Oxford Graduate School in Dayton, Tenn.

His first wife, Ellie, died on Lookout Mountain in 1991. Russ married Harriet Dunning Parsons in 1992.

Russ had a love of travel and exploring the world. He enjoyed camping with Ellie and their children and with Harriet made a number of visits to Europe. He was devoted to preserving a connection with his relatives in the Alsace region of France.

Russ played tennis, and was a lifelong Dodgers baseball fan. He sang in several church choirs, worked diligently on his yard, and was proficient in the theory and practice of humor.

He was a member of Lookout Mountain Presbyterian Church, and with Harriet enjoyed the ministry of Rivermont Presbyterian Church in Chattanooga where he taught Sunday School and led a men's Bible study.

Russell Heddendorf is survived by his wife, Harriet; his son, David and wife, Susan; daughter, Ruth Ann Leduc and husband, Norm; his sister, Marion Dahl; grandchildren, Ellen, Daniel, Nathan and Elizabeth; numerous nephews and nieces; stepdaughters, Debbi and Lois; stepson, Jim; and stepgrandchildren, Jeremy, Brittany, Joshua, John, Cole and Ben.

A memorial service will be held at Lookout Mountain Presbyterian Church at 11:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 2, 2009.

Private burial will follow at Chattanooga National Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 1, at Heddendorf Home and 10-11:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 2, at the church.

J.A. Hicks

J.A. Hicks, 81, of Red Bank, passed away Monday, Dec. 29, 2008, in a local hospital.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Lane Funeral Home, Coulter Chapel.

Interment will be in Chattanooga Memorial Park.

Visitation is 4-7 p.m. today at Lane Funeral Home, Coulter Chapel, 601 Ashland Terrace.

Helen Lee

Helen C. Lee, 88, of Chattanooga, passed away Sunday, Dec. 28, 2008.

She was born Jan. 14, 1920 to the late Mr. and Mrs. Doyle DeWitt Conner, and was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, the late John P. Lee Jr. A longtime resident of Chattanooga, Helen was a quality inspector at a bomber factory in WWII. She was an active member of Shallowford United Methodist Church and later at Tyner Memorial United Methodist Church, particularly in childcare ministries. She enjoyed cooking, reading, buying and selling antiques and had been a competitive pistol shooter. She also served as a past director of the Roark-Conner Association.

Mrs. Lee is survived by niece, Marcia Miller, of Winston-Salem, N.C.; nephew, John Lee, of Dallas, Ga.; one grandniece, four grandnephews, numerous cousins and close family friends.

A memorial service will be held at Tyner Memorial United Methodist Church in Chattanooga, at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 2, 2009.

The family will receive friends at the church thirty minutes before the service.

Private interment of Mrs. Lee's remains will be held at Chattanooga National Cemetery.

Michael Lingerfelt

Michael Lingerfelt, 61, Soddy-Daisy, passed away Thursday, Dec. 25, 2008, at his home.

He was of the Catholic Faith. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. He loved making nautical knots and making pottery. He loved his grandchildren dearly.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Grover and Dorothy Lingerfelt.

He is survived by his daughter, Mary Elizabeth Rose (Austin D.) Byrd; sisters, Kay Wilder, Gail Watts; grandchildren, Jacob and Layla Byrd.

Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Chattanooga National Cemetery with the Rev. Carl Hunsucker officiating.

Vieva McCommon

Vieva A. McCommon, 93, of Hixson, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, Dec. 29, 2008.

Vieva was a lifelong resident of the Chattanooga area and a member of Middle Valley Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard McCommon; her three children, James Thomas McCommon, Mary Ellen Blackburn and Gloria Harvey.

Vieva is survived by her five children, Barbara Vaughan, Pat Chandler, Theresa Green, Catherine Turner and William Richard McCommon; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; sister, Lucille Silverio; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Vieva will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the North Chapel with the Rev. Greg Lindsey officiating.

Burial will follow in National Cemetery.

Ora Moore

Ora "Louise" Clopton Moore, of Chattanooga, passed away Thursday, Dec. 25, 2008, at her residence after a lengthy illness.

She was a former member of Phillips Temple CME Church, where she taught Sunday School and served on the Stewardess Board. She later united with Fellowship Baptist Church under Pastor W.H. Thompson, where she was an active and devoted member, serving on the Trustee Board, and organizing several fund-raising events. She was a lifemember of the NAACP. She was a hair stylist at Sher-Linn Stylist and a longtime caregiver for Mrs. Marie Reynolds.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Lee Moore; parents, Napoleon and Mary Clopton; six brothers and one sister.

Survivors include sisters, Mattie Clopton (devoted caregiver and best friend), Rosa Davis, Mary Lee Grandison, Lillie K. Gaimary, Evangeline Mosley, Emma Bright; two brothers, Aaron Clopton and Jesse Clopton; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins; dear friends, Charlie Norman, Edmund Townsend, Charline Kilpatrick, Faithe Dutto.

Funeral services will be held at noon Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2008, at Fellowship Baptist Church with Pastor Thurman officiating.

Burial: Forest Hills Cemetery.

Roy Morrison

James Roy Morrison, 83, of Chattanooga, passed away on Saturday, Dec. 27, 2008, at his home.

Mr. Morrison was born in Chattanooga to Ernest and Rae Morrison. He graduated in 1944 from Notre Dame High School and Georgia Tech University as an architectural engineer. He was a charter member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Chattanooga Bridge Club. He enjoyed golf and was active with AA for 34 plus years. He was employed as a commercial estimator by various construction companies including C & I Specialty and Collins & Hobbs. He was also a WWII U.S. Army veteran, serving in Korea as a commissioned officer.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, John Patrick Morrison.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Elizabeth Zarzour Morrison; children, Gary Morrison, of Chattanooga and Karen Sawyer and her fiancee, Richard Ryland, both of Chattanooga; twin brother, Ray Michael Morrison; sister, Mary Catherine Gang; and several nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to give a special thanks to Dr. Donald Ziegler, Dr. Nathan Chamberlain, Dr. Diane Roland and Dr. Luke Erdoes, for their exceptional care for Mr. Morrison.

Memorial donations may be made to OLPH or Ladies of Charity.

Visitation will be from noon to 2 p.m. today at OLPH Catholic with a 2 p.m. funeral Mass at the church with Father Mike Nolan officiating.

Elizabeth Osborne

Elizabeth Wilson Osborne, 87, of East Ridge, passed away Monday, Dec. 29, 2008, at a local health care facility.

Mrs. Osborne was a native of Leaksville, N.C. where she was a 1937 graduate of Leaksville High School. She had lived most of her life in East Ridge where she was a member of East Ridge Christian Church, a member of the Blaney Forest Garden Club, and was of the Osborne Enterprise Family of Chattanooga.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Philip M. Osborne Sr.; son, Weldon F. Osborne II; and parents, Eugene and Alice Wilson.

Survivors include her children, Philip M. (Joy) Osborne Jr., of East Ridge, Phyllis Ann (Jerry) Quinn, of East Brainerd, Beth (Robert) Walker, of East Brainerd and Victor E. (Tammy) Osborne, of East Ridge; brother, Paul Wilson, of Leaksville, N.C.; three grandchildren, Debbie (Geoff) Daffron, Robbie Walker and Shane (Deana) Osborne; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

PIKEVILLE -- Jerrel Wade Clark, 60, passed away Sunday, Dec. 28, 2008, at his home.

He was a lifelong resident of Pikeville and of the Church of God faith.

He was preceded in death by his father, Charles Clark.

He was employed by the Department of Defense as an oceanographer. He received his masters degree from Stanford University.

He is survived by his wife, Maria Levinson; daughter, Leah Palmer; grandchildren, Samantha Palmer, Aaron Palmer, Emma and Abbie Levenson.

SWEETWATER -- Samuel C. "Sam" Lovingood, 91, passed away Monday, Dec. 29, 2008, at Park West Medical Center, Knoxville.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Grace Lovingood and six siblings.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Madisonville, a veteran of the U.S. Navy and Merchant Marine; he was a Mason and was retired from Combustion Engineering in Chattanooga.

Survivors: wife, Ida Wee Lovingood , of Sweetwater; son and daughter-in-law, Harris and Lou Lovingood , of Sweetwater; grandsons and spouses, Branhan L. and Kenzie Lovingood, of Sweetwater, Craig H. and Kimberly Lovingood, of Atlanta; several nieces and nephews.

WHITWELL -- Vernon Eugene McCumbers, 74, passed away Thursday, Dec. 25, 2008.

He was preceded in death by parents, Russel and Nellie McCumbers; sister, Ruth O'Malley; brother, Ronnie McCumbers.

Mr. McCumbers was a retired veteran of the U.S. Navy serving during the Vietnam War and a member of the Tennessee Veterans of America. He was a member of Mt. Calvary Baptist Church and retired from Army Corp of Engineers at Nick-A-Jack Dam.

Survivors include wife, Orchid McCumbers, of Whitwell; daughters, Michelle McCumbers, of Rome, N.Y., Alicia McCumbers, of Oahu, Hawaii; grandson, Treston Lindsey; brothers, Ernie McCumbers and Roland McCumbers, of Ohio.

Family will receive friends 10 a.m.-2 p.m. CST Wednesday, until the time of service at 2 p.m. CST Wednesday, Dec. 31, in the funeral home chapel with Rev. John Helenthal officiating.

ATHENS -- Gladys Evelyn Miller, 66, died Monday morning, Dec. 29, 2008, at Erlanger.

Elsie Morgan

SPRING CITY -- Elsie B. Morgan, 77, died Sunday, Dec. 28, 2008, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

Born in Roane County, Tenn., she was the daughter of the late Arthur F. and Annie Keylon Cagle. Elsie was a graduate of Roane State Community College and was employed as a clerk in the Chattanooga State Bookstore before her retirement. She lived in Chattanooga for 20 years before moving back to the Rhea County area. Elsie attended Central Baptist Church in Spring City.

Elsie was preceded in death by her sister, Hazel Grigsby; and stepdaughter, Beverly Morgan.

Survivors include her daughters, Kathy (Mark) Reeves, of Knoxville, Patty (Robert) Ervin, of Spring City; sisters, Edith (Earl) Jolley, Charlene Gibbs and Alma Ann (Ronnie) Holloway, all of Spring City; four grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today in the chapel of Vaughn Funeral Home with the Rev. Danny Carter officiating.

Irene Tiffin

Lillian Irene Tiffin, 89, of Chattanooa, passed away Sunday, Dec. 28, 2008, in a Bridgeport, Ala., nursing home.

She was a member of Tiftonia Baptist Church, the Crusader Sunday School Class and a member of the Lookout Valley Eastern Star.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bedford Tiffin; a baby daughter; and five brothers.

She is survived by her daughter, Donnie Maynor, Bridgeport; and son, Donald (Martha) Tiffin, Chattanooga; grandsons, Joel "Chip" King, Chattanooga, Kenny (Connie) Maynor, Scottsboro, Ala., Jason (Melissa) Tiffin, Soddy-Daisy, David Tiffin, Hixson; great-granddaughters, Taylor and Sydney; sister, Susie (Dick) Ivey, Union Grove, Ala.; special nieces, and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted from the funeral home chapel at 1 p.m. CST today Dec. 30, 2008, with Brother M.L. White officiating.

Richard Trail

SPRING CITY -- Richard Wheeler "Dick" Trail, 81, died Monday, Dec. 29, 2008, at Rhea Medical Center.

Born in Groton, Conn., Dick was the son of the late Marcus Henry and Minnie Spicer Trail. A veteran of WW II, he served his country in the U. S. Navy. Dick was a graduate of the New London Business College and the University of Miami. He moved from Connecticut to the Rhea County area in 1977. Dick retired as vice president of Seaboard World Airlines and was owner of Equipment International Corporation with offices in New York, Miami, Los Angeles and Spring City. He was a member of the American Legion and a former chairman of the Rhea County Medical Center. Dick was a member of Spring City United Methodist Church.

Dick was preceded in death by his brother, Henry Spicer Trail.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Eleanor Chappell Trail; daughters, Christina (Buddy) Sizemore, Miami, Fla., Elizabeth Lawrence, Dowington, Pa., Martha (William) McClanaghan, Groton, Conn., Catherine (Michael) Swafford, Spring City; sons, Timothy Trail, Granbury, Texas, Mark (Carol) Trail, Tyrone, Ga., Matthew Trail, Spring City; sisters, Patricia Maxson, Groton, Conn. and Elizabeth Jacobsen, Mystic, Conn.; brother, John Trail, Groton, Conn.; 12 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Spring City United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dale Wyrick and the Rev. Don Allison officiating.

The body will lie in state 30 minutes before the service.

Burial will be in Spring City Cemetery with military honors and bag pipes.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Vaughn Funeral Home.

David Casey Jr.

RINGGOLD -- David P. Casey Jr., 78, passed away Friday, Dec. 26, 2008.

He was born May 24, 1930, in Rome, Ga. to the late David and Mary Casey. He was of the Baptist faith, a Korean War veteran serving in the Navy, retired from DuPont with 38 years of service, was a member of the Ridgedale Masonic Lodge, a Shriner and a member of the Civil Air Patrol.

He was also preceded in death by his wife, Anna Marie Casey; sister, Geraldine Brockman.

Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, Ronald and Linda Casey, of Signal Mountain; two grandsons, Ryan A. Casey, of Chattanooga and Justin D. Casey, of Ringgold.

Graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 31, in Chattanooga National Cemetery with CH (Captain) Patrick Brownell.

Pallbearers will be Kenny Brockman, Michael Hicks, Robert Hamilton, Mike Rollins, Edwin Alexander and David Alexander.

ROSSVILLE -- Lucy Ellen Gordy James, 85, passed away Sunday, Dec. 28, 2008, at a local nursing home.

A resident of the North Georgia area for most of her life, she was a member of Westside Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, George Marvin and Mary Elizabeth Knight Gordy; sister, Marie Gordy; and two brothers, George Marvin Jr. and Tom Gordy.

She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Harry (Vicki) Fryar Jr., of Chattanooga, and Marvin (Sandy) Meroney, of Laurel, Md.; three daughters and sons-in-law, Jean (Frank) Doyal, of Rossville, Lynda (Lonnie) Roberts, of Gulf Shores, Ala., and Donna (Melvin) Ogle, of Rossville; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Lillard Stringer officiating.

Interment will follow at Anderson Cemetery.

RINGGOLD -- Patricia Burt Smith., 51, departed this life Friday, Dec. 26, 2008, at her home.

She worked for Shaw for four years and was of the Baptist faith.

Joe Holloway Sr.

MILTON, Fla. -- Joe Nelson Holloway Sr., 84, passed away Thursday, Dec. 18, 2008.

Mr. Holloway was a native of Chattanooga, and resided in Milton for the past 40 years. Joe was born to the late J.B. and Lora Holloway. He served as an aviation mechanic for the U.S. Army Air Corp during WWII. Mr. Holloway was an avid race car fan, often attending races at Five Flag Speedway. He was also a sought after builder of some race car components.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his daughter, Linda Darlene Holloway.

Mr. Holloway is survived by his wife, Martha Damron Holloway, of Milton; his son, Joe N. Holloway Jr., of Milton; two sisters, Sue Morrison and Marie Bridgman, both of Tennessee; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Mr. Holloway will be 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 3, 2009, at Lewis Funeral Home, Milton Chapel with the Rev. John Edwards officiating.

Visitation will be from noon-1 p.m. prior to service.

Pallbearers will be Mr. Holloway's co-workers from Cyanamid.
