June Blue

June Thorpe Blue, 86, of Collegedale, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2008, at a local hospital.

She was the daughter of the late Leslie and Loise Thorpe.

She married Sgt. Clarence Blue on July 22, 1944.

She was a member of McDonald Road Seventh-day Adventist Church.

June graduated with a bachelor's degree from Pacific Union College in Angwin, Calif., and went on to receive her master's degree at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. She retired, in 1988, from the Catoosa County Georgia School System as an elementary school teacher specializing in reading.

She was an avid quilter known and loved for her unique, creative and beautiful quilts. She was actively involved with alumni association activities of Southern Junior College.

Survivors include her husband, Clarence W. Blue; three children, Clarence D. Blue, of Bay Town, Texas, Ann Shaffer, Orlando, Fla., and Jan Blue, Tallahassee, Fla.; and a cousin, Margaret Thompson Watkins, of Apison, Tenn.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at McDonald Road Seventh-day Adventist Church with Pastor Don Gettys officiating.

Interment will follow in Pleasant View Cemetery in Graysville, Tenn.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Mildred Bowman

Mildred Bowman, 82, of Dayton, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2008.

She was of the Church of God Faith. She was preceded in death by her husband, Elzie Bowman; daughter, Lola Mae Bowman; and parents, Harold and Etta Talley.

She is survived by her special nieces that were like daughters and granddaughter to her, Shirley, Karen and Tiffany Goins, and several other nieces and nephews.

Graveside service will be at 4 p.m. Saturday at Poe Cemetery with the Rev. Tommy Levi officiating.

Family will receive friends from noon until time of service, Saturday at the funeral home.

Ruby Carter

Ruby Lee Kilgore Carter, 87, of Ooltewah, went to be with her Lord on Monday, Feb. 18, 2008, from her home.

She was a member of Wood Station United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer Carter; father and mother, John and Dora Kilgore; sisters, Dora Francis and Vera Kilgore; and brother, Ennis Kilgore.

She is survived by her sister, Ann Hutsell, of Knoxville; daughter, Sherry James, of Rock Spring, Ga.; two sons, Michael C. Carter, of Ooltewah, and Steve (Joy) Carter, of Hixson; three grandchildren, Chip (Terri) James, Kelly Henrich and Jeff Carter; one great-grandson, Will James; nephew, Larry Hutsell; and great-nephew, Adam Hutsell.

Services were private.

Evelyn Daniel

Evelyn E. Daniel, 74, of Chattanooga, passed away Sunday afternoon, Feb. 17, 2008, in a local hospital.

She was a daughter of the late James and Pecolia Stewart and was preceded in death by her parents; brother, James Stewart Jr.; sister, Mittie Watson; and grandson, Anthony Daniel.

She was a faithful member of Union Grove Missionary Baptist Church.

Survivors include her son, Sylvester (Jackie) Daniel Jr.; two daughters, Vera Daniel and Clementine Daniel, all of Chattanooga; two sisters, Minnie Walton, of Chattanooga, and Mildred (Louis) White, of Trotwood, Ohio; one sister-in-law, Vera (Charlie) Bryant, of Nashville; one brother-in-law, Tom Watson, of Chattanooga; four grandchildren, Delphine (Troy) Battle, Tanisha Daniel and Jerisha Caudle, all of Chattanooga, and Andrea Daniel, of Nashville; five great-grandchildren, Tyreunia Norman, Tory Battle, Anthony Woodall Jr., Aniya Woodall and expecting, Latoria Battle; special dear friend, Sylvester Daniel Sr.; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and in-laws, of Fort Valley, Ga.; and other relatives and friends.

Jane Dent

Jane Dent, a pioneer for women in retail, passed from this life Sunday, Feb, 3, 2008.

Her distinguished career began at Miller Brother's Department Store and spanned more than six decades. Her humor, compassion, and love touched the lives of all who met her.

With her in her final hours were Pam Dent, her daughter, Susan Latta, Karin Booher and her beloved dogs Rita and Tess.

Special gratitude is given to the staff of PACE, Soddy Health Care facility, and Hospice of Chattanooga for their compassion, gentleness and love. Their companionship kept her joy of being with people alive through her final days.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 24, at Pilgrim Congregational United Church of Christ, 400 Glenwood Drive (the corner of 3rd Street and Glenwood).

John Edgmon

John H. Edgmon, 77,formerly of Chattanooga, passed away Sunday, Feb. 10, 2008, in Apopka, Fla.

Mr. Edgmon was a retired general contractor in the Chattanooga area for many years.

He served as deacon in the Seventh-day Adventist Church for 34 years. His hobbies included traveling and visiting 27 countries in his lifetime, and spending time with his grandsons.

He leaves behind two daughters, Jennifer Sadlier and Beth Zimmerman; grandsons, Jason and Brandon; sisters, Lila Poole, Dot Fuller and Thelma Skeggs; and brothers, Grover and Deward Edgmon.

Services will be private.

Harold Grimsley

Harold Keith Grimsley, 82, of Soddy-Daisy, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2008.

He was a lifelong member of Soddy United Methodist Church. Mr. Grimsley was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving during World War II. He retired from Dixie Souvenirs and was an avid motorcyclist and antique car enthusiast. Currently he was a volunteer at Memorial Hospital.

He is survived by his wife, Ruby Varner Grimsley; sons, Johnny Grimsley, of Red Bank, Mark Grimsley, M.D., of Chattanooga; granddaughters, Kari Grimsley, Katie Grimsley and Karla Grimsley; and one great-granddaughter, Kerrigan Raper.

The funeral service is at 10 a.m. today, Feb. 22, 2008, graveside, in Chattanooga National Cemetery with the Rev. Barry Kidwell officiating.

Stephen Allen Helmericks, 62, of Harrison, died Thursday, Feb. 21, 2008, at his home.

Michael Mays

Michael "Redbone" Mays, 57, of Chattanooga, passed away Sunday, Feb. 17, 2008, at his residence.

He was preceded in death by his brothers and best friend, Bobby Joe and James Mays.

He was employed by Robert Poole Construction Co. for many years as a brickmason. He was a member of Olivet Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Annette Mays; daughters, Tricia (Aaron Allen) Taylor, Shautanese Mays, Latosha (Bobby Paris) Mays and Cynthia (William) Bruce, all of Chattanooga; four granddaughters, Jemeka Taylor, Kiarra Young, Keaisha Young and Keyenna Mays; mother, Gladys Mays; devoted sister, Lora (Sylvester) Ammons; brother, Gary (Nikki Sims) Mays; two aunts, Mary Foster and Faye Brantley; two uncles, Andrew Wright and Johnny Wright; sister-in-law, Paulette Gipson; brother-in-law, Vincent Gipson; dear friend, Louis Turner; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Lorrine Moore

Lorrine Moore, 87, of Chattanooga, died Wednesday evening, Feb. 20, 2008, in a local nursing home.

A lifelong resident of the Chattanooga area, she was a member of Bartlebaugh Baptist Church and was the wife of the late Clarence Moore.

Survivors include her son and his wife, Mitchell and Sue Moore; daughter and her husband, Janet and Richard Stafford, all of Chattanooga; five grandsons; and nine great-grandchildren.

Valare Plaisant

Valare Marie Lrigas Plaisant passed away Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2008.

She was born Dec. 9, 1928, in Pennsylvania, she continued her education in New York City and while traveling fell in love with the state of Tennessee and made it her home.

She was well respected throughout the community because of the extensive volunteering throughout the community for many years. In NYC she was president for an organization called "Parents without Partners," with a membership of over 250. Here in Tennessee she was chosen as employee of the year with Kelly's Temp Services ... employees ranging over 350. She received a "Miss Annie Award" from the Chattanooga Theatre Center as a front house volunteer. She retired from the "Chattanooga City Government" after several years of service; received an award from the organization, "Retired Senior Volunteer Program," as volunteer of the year; and also began with the "Friends of the Festival, Riverbend" in 1994; she was devoted to each and every program and employment.

She was preceded in death by parents, Elizabeth Zelonis Lrigas and John Lrigas; brother, John Lrigas; sister, Leona Lrigas Scieszka; son, Sergio John Plaisant; and daughter, Paula Plaisant.

Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Hamilton Memorial Gardens with Father Joe Brando.

Alline Simmons

Elizabeth Alline Simmons, 80, of Chattanooga, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2008, at a local hospital surrounded by her loving family.

Alline was a member of Brainerd Baptist Church and worked many years at United Hosiery Mill.

She retired from Pro Group Golf Co. After her retirement, Alline offered her love and care to families with loved ones with special needs. This was her gift and she treasured these relationships. She also felt blessed to have spent the later years of her life residing at Caldsted, where she developed many special friendships.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Eueal L. Simmons, and parents, Percy Cecil and Mamie Stone.

Surviving relatives, son, Steve Lowery; daughter, Sonja Trusley; stepson, Johnny Simmons; sisters, Nadine (Horace) Eaton and Yvonne (Jim) Stephenson, all of Chattanooga; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Heritage Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. George Clark officiating.

The interment will follow in Greenwood Cemetery.

Isaiah A. "Mobley" Whiting, 26, of Chattanooga, passed Thursday, Feb. 14, 2008, at his residence.

He was a native of Chicago, Ill., and a loving son.

Berton Cagle

JASPER -- Berton B. Cagle, 85, of Jasper, died Thursday, Feb. 21, 2008, in a local hospital.

The son of the late Elijah Benjamin and Lassie Burton Cagle, he attended Jasper Cumberland Presbyterian Church. He served at the Pearl Harbor Naval Yard in civil service during World War II and was the longest serving Constable in Tennessee history. He was the owner and operator of Cagle & Sons, started "Operation Santa Claus" for Marion County children, and ran a free ambulance service for 10 years. H e was also the first Fire Chief in Jasper, the first Fire Marshall and the first City/County Investigator having assisted the FBI and Secret Service on many cases in this area.

An avid Marion County Warriors fan, he ran "The Whistle" at the football games for many years. "The Whistle," a steam whistle that he donated to the Marion County Football Program, was from a train that ran through Palmer, Tenn., at the turn of the century.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Eston Cagle.

He is survived by his wife, Ruby Cagle, of Jasper; sons, Ben (Jayne) Cagle, of Chattanooga, Danny Cagle, of Jasper and Michael Cagle, of Kimball; sisters, Helen Merrell, Maudie Sizemore and Bonnie Ridley, all of Jasper, and Janie Smith, of Chattanooga; grandchildren, Michelle Raulston, of Kimball, Dannette Steele and Ruby McDougal, both of Jasper, Tricia Hinshaw, of Asheville, N.C., and Michael Cagle Jr., of Cookeville, Tenn.; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted from the Jasper Chapel of Rogers Funeral Home on Sunday, Feb. 24, 2008, at 2 p.m. CST with the Rev. James Patterson officiating.

Interment will be in Sequatchie Valley Memorial Gardens.

Byron Ferguson Jr.

COOKEVILLE -- Byron Williams Ferguson Jr. (Jan. 5, 1932-Feb. 19, 2008), known as Bill and Billy to his family and friends, died late Tuesday evening, Feb. 19, 2008, at Bethesda Healthcare Center after an extended illness. He was 76 years old.

Mr. Ferguson was a seventh generation Tennessean and the great-grandson of four Union veterans', grandson of Judge Lewis Patrick Brewer and Grace Thomas of Sequatchie and Artemias Ward Ferguson and Annie Cassandra Randle of Victoria. He was the son of Byron W. Ferguson Sr. and Juanita Brewer both of Marion County.

He was born in Sequatchie, delivered by Dr. Shelton; he played football, basketball and any other sport offered by Marion County High School. He lived in Phoenix, Ariz., during "the war" where he earned the Boy Scout rank of Life before returning to Jasper where he graduated from High School with honors and a Naval ROTC Scholarship to Rice University in Houston. Bill served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War and was severely injured during an explosion aboard the USS Bennington on 26 May 1954, while cruising off Narragansett Bay, which killed 103 crewmen and injured 201 others. It is the worst peacetime naval disaster in US history. He lived in Long Beach, Calif., where he was an engineer for McDonnell-Douglas Aircraft, then transferred to Cookeville, Tenn., in 1966. He was a Methodist by birth, but enjoyed the Episcopalian liturgy and Baptist fellowship. He was a Boy Scout and Explorer Scout leader from 1976 to 1985, completing Woodbadge Training, serving as a member of the Upper Cumberland District C&A Committee and leading an Explorer Post. He had a passion for genealogy and history and volunteered as a genealogy instructor at a local LDS Ward. Bill was a member of American Legion Post 46. He was a wonderful role model and provided lots of love and support to his family and friends.

He is survived by his wife of over 54 years, Miriam "Mimi" (whom he married Aug. 21, 1952, in Jersey City, N.J.); his only son, Byron W. "Billy" Ferguson III; his daughter-in-law, Nancy; one granddaughter, Miriam Alexandra Ferguson; three grandsons, Byron Williams Ferguson IV, J. Matthew Ferguson and Jesse J. Ferguson; a great-grandson, Peyton J. Ferguson; two sisters, Rosemary (Ron) Miller, of Costa Mesa, Calif., and Suzanne Ferguson, of Winchester, Tenn.; many nieces and nephews; and dozens of cousins.

His brother Randy Ferguson preceded him in death. His best friends, Champ and fellow Scouter, Hubert Bennett, went on before him, Hubert just a few weeks ago, to prepare the campsite. He sure will be missed.

He is a Scottish Rite Freemason and a member of Monterey Masonic Lodge 751 F&AM.

Graveside services and interment, with military honors, will be Saturday, Feb. 23, at 1 p.m. CST in Pine Grove Cemetery in Jasper, Tenn., his childhood home alongside those family members who have already made the journey home.

Mr. Ferguson's family will receive friends today from 5 until 7 p.m. CST at the Cookeville Chapel of Hooper-Huddleston & Horner Funeral Home.

A Masonic memorial service will be held following the visitation at 7 p.m. CST in the funeral home chapel conducted by Cookeville Masonic Lodge 266 F&AM.

ATHENS -- Philip A. Haney, 57, died Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2008, at his residence.

Malcolm Simmons

TRACY CITY -- Malcolm Simmons, 73, passed away Monday afternoon, Feb. 18, 2008, from complications of a neuro-degenerative condition that he and his family have fought for the last 12 years.

Malcolm was the eldest son of Gordon and Dovie Manus Simmons of Spencer, Tenn. His father preceded him in death.

Mr. Simmons was a retired coal broker with Amax Coal Co., a member of Sewanee Lodge 405 F&AM and a member of Christ Church Episcopal, Tracy City, and also an avid University of Tennessee sports fan.

Survivors include his mother, Dove M. Simmons, of Spencer; wife of 53 years, Reba Potter Simmons, of Tracy City; son, Michael (Lori) Simmons, of Jasper, Tenn.; two grandchildren, Kelly C. Simmons, of Murfreesboro, Tenn., and Cameron Simmons, of Jasper; two stepgrandchildren, Alex and Zach Lacy, of Jasper, Barbara and Earl Sanders, of Tracy City, who were devoted caregivers and helpers to Malcolm and Reba; three brothers, Fred Simmons, of Chattanooga, A.R. (Shirley) Simmons, of Spencer, and Joe (Alene) Simmons, of Sparta, Tenn.; three sisters, Virginia (Lonnie) Deweese, of Fall Creek Falls, Tenn., Aline (Herb) Ashley, of Sparta, and Inez Nunley, of McMinville, Tenn.; and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

Interment will follow in Chattanooga National Cemetery.

ROSSVILLE -- David Ray Brown, 57, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2008.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Lori Brown.

Survivors include two daughters, LeAnn Brown, of Cleveland, Tenn., and Holly Brown, of Columbus, Ga.; five sons, David Brown Jr., Chattanooga, Roger Harris, of Chickamauga, Ga., Danny Mobley, of Lafayette, Ala., Shawn Mobley, of Lafayette, Ala., and Shane Brown, of Cleveland, Tenn.; sister, Linda Tomas-Gabriel, of Rossville; and several grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

CHICKAMAUGA -- Alton Aundre "Andy" Edwards Jr., 30, of passed away Sunday, Feb. 17, 2008.

He was born Dec. 20, 1977, in Fort Oglethorpe. He was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church, worked at Crystal Springs Print Works and was a 1997 graduate of Gordon Lee Memorial High School where he lettered in football. Andy also loved fishing and Nascar.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Steven Christopher Edwards, and paternal grandparents, Willie and Ollie Mae Edwards.

Survivors include his loving wife, Kristy Edwards; two children, Averie Michelle and Brayden Aundre Edwards; parents, Alton Aundre Edwards Sr. and Mary Anita Holcomb Edwards; brothers and sisters-in-law, Gerald Edwards, James and Suzanne Edwards and Leslie and Tiffany Edwards; sister and brother-in-law, Jennifer and Tim Perry; maternal grandparents, Fred and Barbara Holcomb; grandparents-in-law, Lonnie and June Cripps; mother and father-in-law, Doris and David Cripps; brother-in-law and sisters-in-law, Michael and Becky Cripps and Sheila and Steve Jones; nieces, Hillary Autry, Christa Edwards, Autumn Perry and Paytn Cripps; nephews, Blake Edwards, Travis Autry, Dakota, Jarrett, Nicholas and Daxtin Edwards; and many other family and friends.
