Trojans reach second round

CHICKAMAUGA, Ga. — Gordon Lee’s game plan was simple Friday night.

Create turnovers. Make jump shots. Repeat.

It was just as easy as it sounded.

The Trojans’ full-court trap confused and frustrated Social Circle, and once the Region 6-A champions started hitting their 3-point shots, they cruised past the Redskins and into the second round of the GHSA Class A state tournament with a 58-49 win.

“We had to play great defense against a team with this kind of quickness, and we were able to really jump on them early,” Trojans coach Ed Clendenen said. “We were just creating loose-ball situations and then turning those into possessions and points.”

After Social Circle scored the game’s first basket, Gordon Lee went on a 9-0 run and kept control. The Trojans outscored the Redskins 20-10 in the first quarter and maintained an 8- to 14-point advantage throughout the game.

“The crowd really got us pumped up, and Coach was really on us to play tough defense,” said sophomore guard Grayson Chambers, who scored 16 points.

Senior guard Eric Galyon led all scorers with 18. Galyon made four 3-pointers, and Chambers had three. Lloyd Askew and Chris York also connected from deep to give Gordon Lee nine 3s, accounting for nearly half of the team’s points.

“We have five or six guys who really like to shoot it, and we give all of them the green light,” Clendenen said. “They were really hitting tonight, and that carried us offensively.”

Chambers knew early on that he was in for a big night.

“We were all shooting around before the game, and I was feeling pretty good about my shot,” he said. “We all were. It felt like we were going to be shooting the ball pretty good.”

Social Central was led by Jeffery Meadows, who had 12 of his 14 points in the first half. The Redskins struggled with poor shooting and careless ball-handling throughout. They did not hit a 3-pointer and never corrected their turnover problems.

Gordon Lee will host the winner of Friday’s game between St. Francis and Hancock Central next Tuesday. Gordon Lee used to play in the same region as St. Francis, and the Trojans lost to Hancock Central last season.

“We feel really good about our chances playing here at home,” Chambers said. “Hancock Central beat us pretty bad last year, but with the way we’re playing right now and with home-court advantage, we think we can win.”
