Virginia Webb overheard an intriguing conversation at an art opening reception last October that served as the inspiration for her upcoming show at In-Town Gallery.
“What drives a lot of my work is opportunity,” said the self-taught photographer.
“The Passion Flower Project,” which goes on display Saturday, documents the application of a passionflower tattoo across Ann Law’s chest. Following a diagnosis of breast cancer and a double mastectomy, Ms. Law asked tattoo artist Skip Cisto to embellish her chest with a design of passionflowers created by Mary Petruska.
“When I heard about this extraordinary idea and the courage of Ms. Law, I asked if she would let me document the process,” said Ms. Webb.
Although she took more than 400 photographs, only 21 will be included in the exhibit. Several of these, including a monumental 20-inch by 30-inch image of passionflowers reproduced on canvas, is available for purchase through a silentauction bidding process. Part of the proceeds will be donated to Y-ME National Breast Cancer Organization.
“In circumstances like this, people often feel they should look away,” said Ms. Webb. “Through my photographs, I’m giving people permission to stare — and I hope they will.”
A reception for the show, which will remain on display through March 31, will be held on Friday, March 7 from 5 to 7 p.m.
Ms. Law will give a multimedia performance concerning her diagnosis, healing and recovery at Barking Legs Theater at 8 p.m. on March 6, 7 and 8.
In-Town Gallery, 26 Frazier Ave., is open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday. For information, call 267-9214. Ms. Webb’s images of “The Passion Flower Project” also can be viewed at www.virginiawebb.com.
