Nellie Davis
Nellie Davis died on Saturday, Feb. 23, 2008, after a short illness at the age of 94.
She was born on Jan. 8, 1914 in Watonga, Okla., and in her early childhood moved with her family to Ponca City, Okla., and lived on the nationally famous 101 Ranch (one hundred one thousand acres). She and her younger brother and sister had a very unusual and highly enjoyable childhood. The 101 Ranch had a traveling wild west show and circus. When the circus was in winter quarters at the 101, she rode elephants, ran from the camels as they had a bad habit of spitting on them. The ranch also had a world famous bull rider and bulldogger. He was a very polite and highly bowlegged African American. He was almost killed by the crowds in Mexico when he easily rode and bulldogged their meanest fighting bulls.
She met her husband at a boarding house in Ponca City and were married a year later in July 1937. During WWII, they and their family of two boys moved to southwest Louisiana. What a culture shock for the four. They are survived by their children, James Davis, an engineer in Midland, Texas and his family; and Dr. Larry Davis, a physician here in Chattanooga and his family. The younger son, Rob, is a client at Orange Grove.
Wendell and Nellie moved to Signal Mountain in 1990 and developed many friends. They both enjoyed friends at Signal Crest United Methodist Church on Signal Mountain.
Nellie was famous for her jaw aching cherry pies, fried chicken and oh my my her strawberries and biscuits.
The services for Mrs. Nellie Davis will be 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 29, 2008, at Signal Crest United Methodist Church on Signal Mountain. The service will be conducted by Dr. Mark Gooden of Signal Crest.
Following the service there will be a reception at the church.
She will be missed by family and friends. She was a beautiful, sharp minded, sharp dressing 94 year old lady when she died.
The family has many thanks to the Memorial Hospital staff in the period of her terminal care.
Those who wish to donate to Orange Grove Center in memory of Mrs. Davis will be appreciated by the family, no flowers please.
