Chattanooga: Town Talk

“Genius and virtue, like diamonds, are best plain set — set in lead, set in poverty. The greatest man in history was the poorest.” — Ralph Waldo Emerson

TOASTS CONGRATULATIONS to a group of third-, fourth-, and fifth-grade students who nabbed honors at the Urban League’s summer camp, A World in Motion.

The youngsters explored engineering concepts through hands-on activities, unique team-based projects and field trips, according to a news release. The young campers put their knowledge to the test June 24 when teams composed of six campers competed against each other while building jet toys, steel can rovers and skimmers.

Among the winners were Jasmine Copeland, Marquez Copeny, Sydnee Ruff, LaMarcus Copeny and Emma Bowles.

A World of Motion was made possible with support from Unum and 21st Century Community Learning Centers. For information and dates for camps offered during fall and spring breaks, call Urban League of Greater Chattanooga at 756-1762. EAR TO THE GROUND

MARK YOUR calendar for July 17 for the first Paws for the Cause fundraiser to benefit the Humane Educational Society. The event, a five-star buffet, wine and silent auction will be at Niko’s Southside Grill.

According to Guy Bilyeu, Humane Educational Society executive director, the dinner will offer Southern cooking with the freshest ingredients and an infusion of flavors from the Mediterranean.

“HES is grateful to Keller Williams for sponsoring and managing this fundraiser,” Mr. Bilyeu said in a news release. “As part of the Keller Williams Cares program, the Realtors, led by June Coppinger, want to make sure every abandoned pet finds a home.”

Event supporter Amy Kyriakidis has a special connection to the Humane Educational Society, Mr. Bilyeu said.

“Her grandfather was executive director of the Memphis Humane Society for many years,” he said. “She has a lifetime of memories of helping homeless pets.”

Tickets are $75 per person, $125 per couple and $500 for a corporate table of eight.

For reservations or more information, call 664-1900.
