Swimming the English Channel: It’s a done deal

It’s official. I’m the mother of an English Channel swimmer. And, I can honestly say I’m glad she’s the only one of my four children who did it.

It was a grueling 12 hours and 28 minutes. It’s hard to imagine what 25 miles is, which is what she swam, until you watch it happen. My daughter is the most determined, disciplined human being I have ever met.

I have always been proud of her from the time she first jumped into a pool to getting her doctorate degee to getting back on the boat, somewhat delirious, and want to snuggle with her mom (me) because she was cold.

I’ll fill in more details later tonight. Stay tuned. We’re in Wales and our dinner is ready. I’ll be back.

(Karen Nazor Hill is a features department writer for the Chattanooga Times Free Press. Her daughter Karah Nazor, a former Chattanoogan who is a post-doctorate scholar at the University of California San Francisco, is planning to swim the English Channel. Karah is a longtime swimming enthusiast who swam with the East Ridge Youth Foundation, Greater Chattanooga Aquatic Club, Scenic City Aquatic Club, University of Miami and James Madison University. She won the first 3.5-mile Swim Around the Rock event around Alcatraz in San Francisco.)
