Average people can do a little to save a lot of money and lead a greener lifestyle.
That’s the message from a 47-state motorcoach tour that stopped in Chattanooga Wednesday, organizers said.
The 42-foot biodiesel-powered bus stopped at the hhgregg electronics store near Hamilton Place mall. On board, visitors could see the latest in energy-efficient electronics and get a closer look at the bus, which is powered by gas that burns cleaner and uses solar panels to power many of its onboard components, said Jim Paar, a spokesman for the National Clean Air Green Tour.
“Consumers are changing their way of living and taking steps every day to minimize their impact on the earth,” Mr. Paar said. “We’re taking every effort to educate consumers on ways to enhance that commitment to green living.”
Of the innovations on display Wednesday, the most popular was the tankless hot water heater, which provides instant hot water. Mr. Paar said the system works by heating only the water that’s being used right then and not holding a tank of hot water for later use. It can save consumers 30 to 40 percent on their energy bills, he said.
Mr. Paar said organizers shy away from promoting expensive solutions for energy savings. That includes solar panels, but he also said they don’t bother with energy savers everyone already knows about, such as fluorescent lights.
“But people might not know you can save water and energy by just turning off your water while you brush your teeth or shave,” Mr. Paar said.
The tour, which will visit 120 cities over the next five months, started in Mooresville, N.C., on June 15. The bus was motoring to Birmingham, Ala., on Wednesday afternoon, Mr. Paar said.
