Mallie Beach

Mallie Hartline Beach, 85, of Chattanooga, passed away Wednesday, July 16, 2008, in a local hospital.

She was born in DeKalb County, Ala., and raised in Rising Fawn area. She was 85 years old and always worked in area hospitals.

Mrs. Beach was a PACE participant, she was very well loved by all that knew her.

She was preceded in death by her son, Kenneth Beach; grandsons, Michael Baggett, Ronald Beach; mother, Margie Payne Hartline; and father, Clarence Hartline.

Survivors include her children; son, Porter Beach; daughter, Linda (Ernest) Beach Baggett; daughter-in-law, Nova; grandchildren, Chris and John Baggett, Karen Evitt, David Beach, Kim Belcher; great-grandchildren, Kara Evitt and Jordon Sprosty; many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 19, at 1 p.m. at the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home.

Interment will follow at Hamilton Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends for visitation today, July 18, from 2 to 8 p.m. and Saturday from noon until the time of the service at the North Chapel.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or the Orange Grove Center.

C.F. Bearden Jr.

C.F. “Speedy” Bearden Jr., 79, of Soddy-Daisy, passed away Thursday, July 17, 2008, in a local hospital.

He was born Aug. 12, 1928, in Etowah, Tenn., to the late Mary Sue and Charles Frank Bearden Sr. He was a World War II Navy veteran and Chief Petty Officer on the USS Duncan, Pacific Theater.

He was a member of New Salem Baptist Church in Soddy-Daisy, VFW Post 1289, Hixson Masonic Lodge 747 and the Eastern Star, American Legion Summer Whitehead Post 14, Chattanooga Area Veterans Council, Commandery 14, Scottish Rite, Highlanders of the Shriner’s Alhambra Temple, Grand Order of the Cootie.

Mr. Bearden held several positions: Commander VFW Post 1289, Quarter Master Post 1289 and all other chairs, Tennessee State Commander and all other chairs with the state VFW, Commander and General Elisimo of the Commandery, 33rd degree of the Scottish Rite, Liaison between Chattanooga Area Veterans Council of the Veterans Administration in Washington D.C., past chairman of CAVC, leader in the Boy Scouts and Explorer Scouts and on the board of directors of DuPont Credit Union.

Mr. Bearden received several awards: Disabled American Veterans Driver of the Year, Shriner’s Driver of the Year, VFW Veteran of the Year, American Legionnaire of the Year, CAVC Veteran of the year, and Tennessee Colonel By Govenor of the state of Tennessee.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Aline Bearden; children, Karen Sue McColpin, of Ooltewah, Charles Frank Bearden III and his wife, Pam Hurst, of Ooltewah, Walter Raymond Bearden and his wife, Niki, of Soddy-Daisy, Cynthia June Bearden, of Hixson, William Russell Bearden and his wife, Tracy, of Rossville; 14 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, July 20, at 2:30 p.m. in the North Chapel with the Rev. Ted Painter officiating.

Burial will follow at Hamilton Memorial Gardens with full military honors.

The family will receive friends from 5 until 8 p.m. today and Saturday at the North Chapel.

Lezlie B. Boyd, 50, of Chattanooga, passed away Tuesday, July 15, 2008.

Mickey Collier

Miquelon H. “Mickey” Collier, 61, passed away Tuesday, July 15, 2008, at his home on Signal Mountain.

Mr. Collier was preceded in death by his father, Lawson H. Collier.

Mickey was born in Fayette, Ala., and graduated from Fayette County High School. He graduated from Auburn University in 1969 and was a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity. He was employed with American Enka Co. which was later acquired by BASF Corp. He retired in 2006 with over 37 years of service. He was a member of St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church and the Lions Club of Signal Mountain.

He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Donna K. Collier, Signal Mountain; daughter, Sarah K. Collier, Houston, Texas; mother, Louise B. Collier, Fayette, Ala.; two uncles, Kenneth Berryhill and Wayne Berryhill; four aunts, Maurene Berryhill, Willie May May, Lyndell Barnette and Patricia Berryhill; and many cousins.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. EDT Saturday at St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church with the Rev. George Choyce and the Rev. Gordon Temple officiating.

Private family interment will follow in the church memorial garden.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.

Johnny Lee Denayer Sr., 61, lifelong resident of Chattanooga area, died Monday, July 14, 2008.

He was a member of Bayside Baptist Church. Johnny was a Navy veteran of the Vietnam War.

Survivors include his son, Johnny “Shot” Denayer; daughters, Jaime Copley, Cristina “Crissy” McConathy and Jana Robinson; mother, Leila Denayer; brother, Larry Denayer; four grandchildren; one niece.

Walter Childs Hall, 99, of Hixson, passed away Wednesday, July 16, 2008, in a local hospital.

Born in Beatyville, Ky., he lived in Hixson since 1971 and was a member of the Hixson First Baptist Church. Walter was also a member of Daisy Masonic Lodge 706 F&AM.

He was preceded in death by his son, Dr. Paul Hall; and his grandson, Walter Holman Hall.

Survivors include his wife of 78 years, Charlotte Card Hall; daughter, Frances Hall, of Hixson; brother, Robert Hall, of Lake Park, Ga.; granddaughter, Susan Trott; and great-grandchildren, Connor and Preston Trott.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 19, 2008, at 1 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Terry Shannon officiating.

Smith O’Hara

Smith “Buck” O’Hara, 65, transcended into celestial peace Monday, July 14, 2008.

He was born May 5, 1943, in Atlanta. “Buck” was preceded in death by his mother, Elizabeth Ware; brother, Ralph O’Hara; mother of his children, Shirley Ann Idelle-O’Hara.

Mr. O’Hara came to Chattanooga at an early age and attended Riverside High School. He was an entrepreneur of various jobs in Georgia and Tennessee. “Buck” was also a faithful member of the Male Chorus and Senior Choir at Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church.

“Buck” leaves with us a devoted and loving son, Deacon Smitty L. (Stephenie) O’Hara; daughter, April (Leslie) Blackstock; five grandchildren, Charles and Shawn McClesky, Quintella Bibbs, Eboney Blackstock, Quintel O’Hara; one great-grandchild, Angel Blackstock; a host of cousins, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at the funeral home with Pastor James Calhoun officiating.

Burial: Highland Cemetery.

The body will lie in state today after noon.

Rev. Harold Pittman

Rev. Harold Loyd Pittman, 84, of Ooltewah, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, July 16, 2008.

He was born Oct. 13, 1923, in Ringgold, Ga., to the late Pauline and James Ernest Pittman Sr.

Mr. Pittman was retired from Combustion after 35 years of service and was the former pastor of Community Baptist Church in Apison and was a member and former assistant pastor of New Life Baptist Church.

His first wife, Lola Shipley Pittman; second wife, Sue Forrester Pittman; brother, Ernest “Junior” Pittman; and stepdaughter, Margie Atkins preceded him in death.

He is survived by his wife, Elsie Coleman Pittman; daughters and sons-in-law, Dianne and Kenneth Brogan, Elaine and Billy Wilson all of Ooltewah; stepchildren, Hoyt and Beverly Jamerson of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; Michelle and Vernie Tippens of Cleveland; sister-in-law, Mildred Pittman of Ooltewah; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

The family would like to express their deepest appreciation to those at Caris and Life Care Center of Collegedale for the special way you loved and cared for our loved one.

Tom Powell went home to be with the Lord on Monday, July 14, 2008, at a local hospital.

He was a member of Mount Canaan Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Hattie Jordan Powell; his parents, James and Doshie Powell; sisters, Sarah Clark and Emma Jean Moore; and brother, Jack Powell.

He leaves to cherish six children; Willie (Brenda) Powell, of Livingston, Ala., Roddy Powell, Maurice (Marlinda) Powell, David (Yvonne) Powell, Kevin Powell and Linda Powell-Ward; sisters, Lille Mae (Leamon) Sledge and Ruby Lee Dial; sister-in-law, Annie Ruth Jordan; brother-in-law, Jim Moore; 13 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.

Mary Ross

Mary Kathryn Ross, 91, passed away Saturday, July 12, 2008, in a local health care facility.

Mrs. Ross was preceded in death by her husbands, Raymond Range and Charles S. Ross.

She had resided in Gainesville, Fla., for over 20 years before moving to the Chattanooga area 10 years ago. She was a veteran of the U.S. Navy during World War II and actively attended the Waves Conventions. She was a co-author for the Roberts English Series. She attended St. Luke Methodist Church and was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Gainesville, Fla.

She is survived by her sister, Jean M. Wilkinson, Chattanooga; stepson, Perrin Ross, Florida; sister-in-law, Nell McQueen, Elizabethton, Tenn.; niece, Shelley Irwin, Chattanooga; nephews, Jay Wilkinson, Atlanta, and Raymond McQueen, Florida; great-niece, Megan Irwin, Chattanooga; great-nephews, Chad Irwin, Chattanooga, Matthew McQueen, Los Angeles, Calif., and Owen McQueen, Florida.

Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 19, 2008, at Heritage Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Greg Smartt officiating.

Interment will be in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Va.

Jim Frank Steffner

James Franklin “Jim Frank” Steffner went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, July 16, 2008, after spending 96 years here on earth serving the Lord, his family and fellow man.

Now that his work here is done, he will be joining his loving wife of 59 years, Violet P. Steffner; brothers, John and Sam; sister, Marjorie Richardson; and great-grandson, Adam Taylor. He leaves his devoted wife, Shirley, who shared 10 years of happiness after the death of his first wife, Violet. Jim Frank was a most loving caring husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He will be greatly missed by his two sons and their wives, Jim Steffner Jr. and Marian and Thomas E. Steffner and his wife, Sue; and brother Ed. Papa Jim, as he is affectionately known by his grandchildren will always be their role model. He will always remain special to Dorothy “DD” and her husband, Shawn Rutledge, Jarmin and her husband, Fox Johnston, Jamey and his wife, Sara, Tommy and his wife, Tara and Heidi and her husband, Spencer Chinery. His long and healthy life enabled him to enjoy his 11 great-grandchildren.

Jim Frank graduated from Central High School in 1930 and the University of Tennessee in 1935 with a degree in electrical engineering. Upon graduation, he worked a few years in Knoxville with the family business, then returned to become the third generation Steffner to manage Chattanooga Armature works, a family owned business that began in 1896. There he began a career with his father Ulrich and brother John that would last until his retirement in the mid 1980’s. During his career he was instrumental in the founding of other companies including Electric Motor Sales which he started in 1947 and remains a family business. Jim Frank gave back to his profession by serving as the International President of EASA, an association for owners and management in the electric motor repair and sales industry. He was a longtime member of the Kiwanis Club and served as chairman of the Chattanooga Manufacturers Association and president of Engineers Club.

Jim Frank loved serving the Lord and his church. After being a member of St. Andrews UnitedMethodist since childhood he became an early member of West Memorial United Methodist Church where he taught Sunday school, served as chairman of the Administrative Board and Trustee. For the past few years Jim Frank and his wife, Shirley, have been members of First-Centenary United Methodist along with other residents of Alexian Grove.

The family greatly appreciates our caregivers, Patsy Gilbert, Linda Overton, Margret Rainey and Ken Thomas who gave Jim Frank so much loving care and the family peace of mind. We also want to thank Hospice of Chattanooga for their kind and professional help.

The family will receive friends from 1:30 until 2:30 p.m. Sunday at First-Centenary Church prior to the memorial service.

A memorial service to celebrate the life of Jim Frank will be held 2:30 p.m. Sunday, July 20, at First-Centenary United Methodist Church, 419 McCallie Ave., Chattanooga, TN 37402, with Dr. Charles Neal and Dr. David Harr officiating.

Immediately following the service family and friends are invited to attend a graveside service at Forest Hills Cemetery.

Ida Mae Tipsey, 90, of Chattanooga, passed away Monday, July 14, 2008, in a local healthcare facility.

She was a member of Prospect Missionary Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James Gray; parents, Haywood and Beulah Tipsey; daughter, Erma Jean Jackson; two sisters; two brothers; and two grandchildren.

Survivors: daughter, Willena T. Nunn, of Chattanooga; 13 grandchildren; a host of great-grandchildren; brother, James Wade “J.W.” Tipsey. of Chattanooga; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Frank Weaver

Frank Weaver, 91, died Sunday, June 29, 2008.

He was predeceased by his parents, Frank and Lena, and sisters, Arvelle and Mary.

Survivors include his wife, Enid, and nephews, Robert and Michael, and their respective families.

A memorial service will be conducted at Valeybrook Presbyterian Church, 6001 Hixson Pike, on Saturday, July 19, at 3 p.m.

DUNLAP — Mildred Vernon Abbott, 84, formerly of Trion, Ga., died in a Chattanooga hospital, Thursday, July 17, 2008.

Mrs. Abbott was a member of McFall Baptist Church, Rome, Ga., and had been a nurse for over 50 years.

Survived by daughters, Jeanie Lambert and Myra Bell, of Dunlap; sons, Dennis Bell, of Dunlap, and Tommy Bell, of Rome, Ga.; brother, Charles Vernon, of Leesburg, Fla.; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

TRENTON — Sarah Ann Tinker Atchley, 95 went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, July 16, 2008.

She was of the Baptist faith.

She was born Oct. 17, 1912, to the late Zara Ann Stevens Tinker and John Riley Tinker Sr.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Atchley Sr.; brothers, John Riley Jr., Willy, Jim, Than “Dick”, Webb, Wiley and Ernest; sisters, Myrtle Evans, Verda Raines, Margaret Taylor and Grace Green; and special friend, Sidney Womack.

Survivors include by daughter and son-in-law, Peggy and Joey Keith; granddaughter, Penny Spencer Tapley; great-grandchildren, Robert Levi West, Dillon Tapley and Shelby Tapley; stepsons, Earl Atchley Sr., Joe Atchley Sr., J.C. Atchley and Tommy Atchley; and several nieces and nephews.

RINGGOLD — Louise Carter Birchett, 78, passed away Wednesday, July 16, 2008, at her home.

She was a member of Mount Pisgah Baptist Church.

Born Dec. 21, 1929, in Tellico Plains, Tenn., she was the daughter of the late William and Lois Carter. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jack K. Birchett; brothers, William, Paul and David Carter; and sisters, Carzell Durham, Armell Holt, Jo Ann Stephenson, Elizabeth Owens and Virginia King.

Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law, Jack and Dorris Birchett, of Cohutta, David and Vicki Birchett, of Ringgold, and Jim Birchett, of Ringgold; grandchildren, Steve, Brian (Natalie), Scott and Stacy Birchett; sister, Barbara Seabolt; brothers, Ray, Clarence, Calvin and John Carter; and special friend, Ben Lee.

ATLANTA — Lois Misicka Davis, 85, passed away Wednesday, July 16, 2008.

Mrs. Davis was a devoted wife of a career Army officer and a loving mother.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Robert E. Davis.

She is survived by her daughters Carol Hetzler, of Roswell, Ga., Kim Cason, of Sweetwater, Texas, Donna Davis and Mary Lou Dahlquist, both of Phoenix, Ariz.; eight grandchildren; and a brother, Jay Misicka, of Naperville, Ill..

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. today, July 18, 2008, at Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, Ga

Jr. Land

ROSSVILLE — Wachel A. Land Jr., 65, departed this Thursday, July 17, 2008, at his home.

He was born in Ringgold, Ga., to the late Wachol Avory Land Sr., and Jessie Lee Rhodes Land, and was preceded in death by his brother, Harold Land; son, Robert Land; and wife, Margaret Land.

He worked for Candlewick Yarns for 24 years, and retired from Mohawk after six years. He was of the Pentecostal faith.

Survivors include his children, David Land, of Lookout, Ga., Dale Williams, Charles Land and Gene land, all of Rossville, Becky Dixon, of East Ridge, and Amy Kendrick, of Rossville; sisters, Avory Whittamore, of Ellijay, Ga., Addie Lee Whitehead and Sheila Erwin, both of Chattanooga; 14 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 19, 2008, in the chapel with the Rev. Janice Inman and the Rev. Jim Smith officiating.

Interment will follow in Lakewood Memory Gardens, South.

Family will receive friends all day today, and prior to the service Saturday.

ROSSVILLE — Lois McKay, 86, died Wednesday, July 16, 2008, at her residence.

Funeral services are at 1 p.m. today in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Henry Hampton officiating.

Donald Payne

CHICKAMAUGA — Donald “Devin” Payne, 35, passed away Tuesday, July 15, 2008.

He was born Feb. 2, 1973, in Dalton, Ga. He was of the Baptist faith, enjoyed music and the outdoors. Devin played the guitar and drums and loved his dirt bike and rock climbing.

He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Edith West; grandfathers, Lloyd Payne Sr. and Edwin York; and aunt, Patricia Lewis.

Survivors include his parents, Lloyd Donald Payne Jr. and Teresa Ann York Payne, of Chickamauga; daughter, Erica Paige Roberts, of LaFayette; grandmother, Mary Jo Payne, of Farner, Tenn.; brother and sister-in-law, Denny and Norma Payne, of LaFayette; aunts and uncles, Dale and Peggy Payne, of Benton, Tenn., Gary and Sheila Payne, of Athens, Tenn., Timmy and Amy Payne, of Ducktown, Tenn., Pedro and Renee Payne, of Blue Ridge, Ga., Larry and Patricia York, of Asheville, N.C.; niece, Nicole Payne; nephew, Luke Payne; and several cousins.

Funeral services was held at 2 p.m. Thursday, July 17, 2008, in the funeral home chapel.

Interment was in Rock Spring Cemetery.

James Stephens

ROSSVILLE — James Stephens, formerly of Rossville, died Friday, July 11, 2008, in Ormond, Fla.

He was employed by Maudlin International of Orlando and had worked for Lee-Smith of Chattanooga for many years. While in Chattanooga he played music with several bands and was known for his beautiful voice.

He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Ethel and Earl, and son, Seth.

He is survived by his wife, Sherry; sons, Alexander, of Lynchburg, Va., and Spencer, of Athens, Tenn.; sister, Linda; brothers, Junior and John Jowane; and several nieces and nephews.

Burial will be at noon Monday July 21, 2008, at Mount Home Cemetery in Ider, Ala.

A gathering of family and friends will be held at Christie’s Cafe 3920 Ringgold Road, East Ridge, from 6 to 8 p.m. that same evening.

Katherine Lamb

DARLINGTON, Md. — Katherine Janet McDaniel Lamb died Wednesday, July 9, 2008, at Harford Memorial Hospital in Havre De Grace, Md.

She was born Feb. 16, 1938, in Pulaski, Va., to William Gordon McDaniel and Winnie Katharine King McDaniel.

Her early years were spent in Pulaski, Va., but her family later moved to Portsmouth, Va. She graduated from Craddock High School in 1955. She worked for the Virginia State Health Department where she met John T. Lamb, her future husband. They were married on April 22, 1962, at Norfolk (Va.) Seventh-day Adventist Church and several years later they moved to Takoma Park, Md. She was employed at Sligo Elementary School, at the General Conference of Seventh-Day Adventists and Walter Reed Army Medical Center in the medical records section. After having a child, she and her husband moved to Darlington, Md. She then worked for Davis Concrete and Quarry, Caddie Homes, and the Job Corps Center in Port Deposit. She then worked for Home Health Education Service selling the Bible Story books. Her favorite part of this work was praying with people and encouraging them to study the Bible. She then worked for Bechtel at the Peach Bottom Atomic Power Station until her retirement. She and her husband had recently celebrated their 46th wedding anniversary. She was a member of Wilna Seventh-day Adventist church and held several church offices including church treasurer.

She was preceded in death by her father and mother; brothers, Willis “Pete” Gordon McDaniel and William Duane McDaniel; and niece, Debbie McDaniel.

She is survived by husband, John T. Lamb Jr., of Darlington, Md.; son, John W. Lamb; daughter-in-law, Cindee; grandsons, Robert and Samuel H. Lamb, all of Harrison; niece, Jane Cunningham, of Buchanon, W.Va.; and sister-in-law, Martha McDaniel, of Portsmouth, Va.

Services will be at the funeral home Monday, July 21, at 10:30 a.m. with Pastor Tom Leblanc officiating.

Interment will be in Darlington Cemetery.
