Late afternoon storms toppled trees, set off burglar alarms and caused several auto accidents with minor injuries, according to Soddy-Daisy police dispatcher Jamie St. Aubin.
One storm arrived about 4 p.m. and lasted about 30 minutes and another powerful storm soon followed, Ms. St. Aubin said. Electricity flickered on and off, but there are no reports of power outages, she said.
About an inch and a quarter of rain fell around Soddy-Daisy, according to David Hotz, meteorologist from the National Weather Service in Morristown, Tenn.
Lightning struck around 40 times in Soddy-Daisy in a 15-minute period around 4:30 p.m., he said.
“People in that area, I’m sure they were amazed at how much lightning was coming down,” Mr. Hotz said.
Less than a tenth of an inch fell at the Chattanooga airport Sunday, he said.
At least nine trees reportedly fell around Soddy-Daisy, Ms. St. Aubin said, including two that fell on roofs, two that fall on cars and one that fell on a recreational vehicle.
There were no reports of serious injuries.
In the Chickamauga area of Walker County, Ga., a storm knocked out power around 7:30 p.m. when a tree limb fell on a transformer.
Crews from the North Georgia Electric Membership Corp. were called to the scene and power was restored to the area by about 8:15 p.m., according to a Walker County Sheriff’s Department official.
