Retailers, shoppers prepare for sales tax holiday in Alabama

MOBILE, Ala. — Alabama’s third annual sales tax holiday weekend starts at midnight Aug. 1 through Sunday. Retailers statewide are extending hours and planning special sales based on the success of the previous sales tax holiday weekends.

The state is waiving its four percent sales tax. Nancy Dennis, a spokeswoman for the Alabama Retail Association, said more than 200 cities and counties are also waiving all or part of their local sales taxes.

The tax-free weekend is designed to help parents with back-to-school purchases, but anyone can buy items covered by the sales tax waiver.
