In Northwest Georgia schools, educators are looking forward to the final phase-in of a sweeping, comprehensive curriculum change that includes mathematics, language arts, sciences and social studies. Like school districts across the state, Catoosa, Dade and Walker county school districts reported a drop in standardized test scores the first year of new tests on the new curriculum. But area educators said scores have gone up after the initial introduction of the new programs.
Though small and mostly rural, school districts in Northwest Georgia are growing, adding students and building new schools. In Catoosa County, the district had 15 schools and served 10,448 students in 2007.
Dade County has four schools for 2,456 students, and Walker County has 14 schools for 9,033 students in 2007, state report card information shows.
