Tennessee: Church offers to buy Pyramid

MEMPHIS — There’s a new offer for the downtown Memphis arena where the Grizzlies and the University of Memphis formerly played basketball.

The Commercial Appeal reported today that a local church is offering $12 million to buy The Pyramid.

The four-sided, glass-sheathed structure has been vacant since completion of FedEx Forum in 2004.

Shelby County Chief Administrative Officer Jim Huntzicker said Cummings Street Missionary Baptist Church has sent letters to the county and city mayors, expressing interest in buying The Pyramid. The church has 5,000 members and is growing.

A joint city-county arena committee is asking the city to press Bass Pro Shops, which has been eyeing the building, to make a firm commitment by the end of the month.
