Sean Phipps & Casey Phillips discuss Folk Music

by Sean Phipps

It may come to no surprise to you that I consider myself a “folkie,” defined as a fan of Folk music. I love a song that means something to somebody, a song that is worth singing if nothing more than for the sheer joy of doing so. Folk music is music for the people by the people. The founding father of Folk, Woody Guthrie, said it best: “ I am out to sing the songs

that will make you take pride in yourself and in your work." On this week’s MUSICcast, Casey Phillips and I will take a look at some of favorite folk songs from the Dust Bowl 1920’s with Woody Guthrie to the Vietnam-era 70’s with Pete Seeger. We’ll throw in an Irish folk song as well. We’d love to know your favorite folk song. Be sure to drop me an e-mail at sphipps@timesfreepress.com
