Chattanooga Lookouts surge to win

The Chattanooga Lookouts defeated West Tenn 6-1 Saturday night at AT&T Field by scoring five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Those runs came just in time.

The lights above the field were knocked out twice in the eighth inning — because of power surges, Lookouts officials believed. The first blackout, in the top of the eighth, resulted in an 18-minute delay.

The second one occurred after the Diamond Jaxx had been retired, resulting in a 16-minute stoppage.

The Lookouts’ Sean Henry drove in the go-ahead run in the seventh with a double to left field. Justin Turner followed with a two-run double to right-center, and Danny Dorn added a two-run home run to right-center. Improving to 15-20 at the midway mark of the Southern League’s second half, Chattanooga pulled within four games of the North Division lead.

“We came in here today and saw where we were just five games back after the little run we’ve had where we haven’t swung the bats real well,” Lookouts manager Mike Goff said. “We’re one six- or seven-game winning streak from taking over first place or being a game out. If our (pitching) starters can continue what they’ve been doing and our batters can start getting some big two-out hits and picking up those cheap runs at third base, then we’re going to be in good shape.”

Despite their sub-.500 record (52-53 overall), the Lookouts have had a productive year developmentally.

Starting pitchers Daryl Thompson and Ben Jukich, middle reliever Danny Herrera, closers Josh Roenicke and Carlos Fisher, top opening-day infielder Luis Bolivar and top-opening day outfielder Shaun Cumberland headline the players who have been promoted to Triple-A Louisville. Thompson, who went 3-2 with a 1.76 earned run average in 10 starts with the Lookouts, and Herrera, who went 3-0 with a 2.55 ERA in 10 appearances, each made his big-league debut.

“We’re kind of caught in between,” pitching coach Chris Bosio said. “We’re proud of the fact that we’ve been able to get some guys to the next level, and it’s a credit to them for working hard and being successful, but at the same time, we’re all competitive here and we all want to win. Because there was so much movement, that means they were probably a little thinner on top.

“Right now, I hate to say it, but it is what it is. We’ve got to make do and find a way to win and develop the guys that we have. Sure, if we still had a lot of the guys we’ve lost, things would have been different, but that’s part of the game.”

The Lookouts open a five-game series in Mississippi tonight and then play five in Birmingham before returning to AT&T against Tennessee on Aug. 6.

“I think it will be pretty close at the end, and I think a lot depends on how we do in Jackson,” Henry said. “We played real well (winning three of four) the last time we were there.”

Travis Wood (2-5, 6.13 ERA) is scheduled to start tonight’s series opener for the Lookouts, with Carlos Sencion (3-2, 4.82) scheduled for the Braves.
