* Why it is worth the trip: The antebellum home gives visitors a glimpse of what life was like before the Civil War. Visitors can stand in rooms that were occupied by Union troops during the war.

* Admission: $3

* Things to do: Visitors can tour the home, or attend specially scheduled events. In October the home is the site of the annual Heritage Day celebration. In November a Victorian Tea is scheduled and candlelight tours are hosted around Christmas. It is located in the heart of LaFayette, which has locally-owned restaurants and other historic sites, such as the Chattooga Academy, which served as Confederate Gen. Braxton Bragg’s headquarters in 1863.

Cost saving tip: Pack a lunch and picnic in the park area next door.
