Man dies, infant unhurt in Grundy crash
An adult died Saturday after being thrown his car when it crashed into a tree along state Highway 108 near Altamont, Tenn., about 8:30 CDT, according to Tennessee Highway Patrol dispatchers.
James Benefield, 41, of Sparta, Tenn., was traveling north when he went off the right hand side of the road, overcorrected, crossed the highway and struck a tree, according to the report filed by Trooper Tim Garner.
The two-door Ford overturned when it struck the tree, ejecting the driver who was unrestrained, the trooper said.
Mr. Benefield, who died at the scene, worn a seat belt he would probably have survived, since a 23-month-old who was properly restrained was uninjured in the crash, according to Trooper Garner.
Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the crash, Trooper Garner reports.
