Chattanooga: CARTA could cut electric shuttle

by Michael Davis

The Chattanooga Area Regional Transportation Authority may have to eliminate its free electric shuttle services downtown and to the North Shore to fill a projected budget shortfall of almost $1 million.

During a joint committee meeting this morning, the CARTA board discussed an array of other options, including cutting back some bus service and charging for the shuttle. The transportation agency is dealing with increasingly high fuel prices.

“This is going to entail painful decisions all the way around,” said Steve Jett, the agency board’s chairman.

Executive Director Tom Dugan said his current recommendation is to close down the electric shuttle service. He said he will present a series of options to the board at next Thursday’s meeting and ask the board to authorize a public hearing.

He said he expects the board to make a decision on cuts at July’s meeting and for any change or changes to be implemented effective Aug. 3.

How does the price of Gasoline or Diesel affect an electric shuttle?

Isn't it the other buses that are causing the "shortfall"?
