Winifred Barbre

Winifred "Winnie" Barbre, 89, of Chattanooga, passed away on Friday, June 13, 2008, after a short illness.

Winnie lived most of her life in Georgia, and the past 11 years in the Chattanooga area near her daughter, Lynda. She was known for her southern charm and especially the articulate manner in which she expressed herself and the affectionate way she engaged her friends, family and associates, even throughout her illness.

Winnie is survived by her daughter, Lynda (John) DiPrima; son, Ned (Vicki) Barbre; grandchildren, Mark, Jack, Matt DiPrima and Zachary, Patricia Barbre; great-grandchildren, Daniel, Sky, Ivy and Ryan DiPrima.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 19, at St. Stephen Catholic Church, on Lee Highway with the Rev. Gilbert Diaz officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Catholic Charities of Chattanooga.

Pauline Elder, 89, of East Ridge passed away Saturday, June 14, 2008, at her residence.

Funeral services will be today, June 18, at 1 p.m. in the South Crest Chapel.

Interment will follow in Lakewood Memory Gardens, South.

Edward Milton Elliott Sr., 77, of Chattanooga, went to be with the Lord Sunday, June 15, 2008, from a local hospital.

Funeral services will be held at graveside 10 a.m. today, June 18, 2008, in Chattanooga National Cemetery with Charlie Blevins officiating and with military honors.

Patricia Ganaway

Patricia Boykin Gannaway, 69, of Chattanooga, passed away at a local hospital with family at her side Tuesday morning, June 17, 2008.

She was a Chattanooga native born to the late Sam and Berniece Boykin. She and her husband, George met in high school and graduated together from Chattanooga City High School. After high school she graduated from the University of Georgia at Athens where she was a member of Kappa Delta Sorority. Pat enjoyed raising and being with her children and grandchildren more than anything. She especially enjoyed being with family during their annual beach trips to their beach home in Mexico Beach, Fla.

She was a member of First Centenary United Methodist Church and the Morgan Sunday School class. Also, she was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She enjoyed regular bridge games with her girl friends.

She is survived by her husband, George T. Gannaway; son, Sam (Sandy) Gannaway, of Birmingham, Ala.; daughter, Ellen (Mike) Lail, of Atlanta; son, Bryan (Kendra) Gannaway, of Atlanta; and grandsons, Neil and Cole Gannaway, of Birmingham.

The family will receive friends from 5–8 p.m. today at the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, 404 S. Moore Road. On Thursday, the family will receive friends from 10 a.m.–10:30 a.m. at First Centenary United Methodist Church prior to the funeral services.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at First Centenary United Methodist, 419 McCallie Ave. with Dr. David Harr officiating.

The burial will follow at Chattanooga National Cemetery.

Annie Ruth Goff

Annie Ruth Goff, 83, of Franklin, Ky., formerly of Chattanooga, passed away on Sunday, June 15, 2008.

She was an active member of Franklin Church of Christ. Mrs. Goff moved to Chattanooga in 1950 with her late husband, Erb, to whom she was married for 59 years until his passing in 2001. She devoted her life to her family and in serving her Lord as a faithful Christian.

She is survived by her three daughters, Janet Cardwell, of Franklin, Ky., Lucille Leming, of Chattanooga, and Debbie Giffen, of Smyrna, Tenn.; nine grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. today at Central Church of Christ with Minister David Schonhoff and Minister David Hamilton officiating.

Burial will follow in Hamilton Memorial Gardens with her grandsons, Tommy and Scott Bruno, Frank and Johnny Cardwell, Jon and Andy Giffen and Scott Randolph serving as pallbearers.

The family will receive friends from noon to 1 p.m. today at the church.

Charles Green

Charles Edward Green, 90, of Hixson, passed away on Tuesday, June 17, 2008, in a local hospital.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. Mr. Green was a loving grandfather and friend to everyone. He loved to travel over the United States and was very charitable.

He was preceded in death by his wife, the great love of his life, Georgia Green; and siblings, Freddie, Ira, Earl, Edward and Ruby.

Survivors include his granddaughter, Gloria Dreyfus, of Ventura, Calif.; nephews, Lee and Jerry Green, of Bakewell; and his niece Betty Jo Green, of Bakewell.

The funeral service will be graveside at 10 a.m. Thursday, June 19, 2008, with the Rev. Vernon Sneed officiating and full military honors.

Visitation is today from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Joe Jackson II

Joe W. Jackson II, 25, formerly of Chattanooga, passed away Sunday, June 15, 2008 in a Meridian, Miss., hospital.

He was a graduate of The Baylor School of Chattanooga and a 2004 graduate of the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, Ala. He was a member of the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity and a member of Masonic Lodge 490. He was a member of Olivet Baptist Church and was employed by the Hershey Co. in Meridian.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Calvin L. King Jr., James and Annie P. Gilmore.

Survivors include his parents, Joe W. and Ingrid K. Jackson, of Chattanooga; sister, Joelle Jackson, of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; grandmother, Josie King, of Chattanooga; uncles, Herman L. King, Donald (Janice) King, both of Chattanooga, Bobby L. (Ida) Jackson, of Birmingham, Ala., Johnny B. Jackson, of Tuscaloosa, Ala., Ferman Jackson, of Carrollton, Ala., Lorenzo Jackson, of Huntsville, Ala. and Winston Gilmore, of Tuscaloosa, Ala.; aunts, Edna R. Dennis Lane

Dennis Lane, 56, of Chattanooga, died Tuesday, June 10, 2008.

He was a graduate of Howard High School.

He was preceded in death by parents, George and Maxine Lane; son, Dennis Freeman.

He is survived by children, Stephanie, Serina, Shana and Siretha Lane; dear sisters, Glenda Harris, Annie Laura Lane; two special sisters, Julia and Thera Beaman; three brothers, Freddie, Darrell, Anthony "Teddy" Lane; special brother, Albert Beamam; 19 grandchildren; dear aunt, Liz Lane Hester and other aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends; special cousins, Darrell and Tawanna Hinton, special nephew, Rashard Berry; dear friend, "Snake."

Mary Marzahn

Mary L. Marzahn, 94, died peacefully in her home on Sunday, June 15, 2008.

A native of South Dakota, she served as a minister's wife and elementary teacher in Iowa and Illinois, moving to Chattanooga in 1993.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Wilbert W. Marzahn.

She is survived by her four children, Kathryn (Ken) Conklin, of Chattanooga, Margery (Lloyd) Ambrosius, of Lincoln, Neb., William (Lynda) Marzahn, of Conventry, R.I., and Charles (Carol) Marzahn, of Virginia Beach, Va. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

A service of celebration will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 21, 2008, at First-Centenary United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. David Harr officiating.

The family will receive visitors just prior to the service. Cremains will be buried in Cissna Park, Ill.

The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Mary's memory to the Building Fund of First-Centenary United Methodist Church, Habitat for Humanity, or to Hospice of Chattanooga.

Elijah Miolen

Elijah Miolen, 90, of Cleveland, Tenn., died Monday, June 16, 2008, in an area health care facility.

Mr. Miolen was a member of Westmore Church of God and was an avid gardner.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Estelle Miolen. Mr. Miolen was a retired U.S. Army veteran having served two tours in VietNam and most recently with the Civil Service, proudly serving 26 years.

Survivors include a son, Wayne Miolen, Cleveland; two daughters, Brenda Kilpatrick, Daphne, Ala., Vickie Prophitt, Mount Zion, Ga.; sister, Leila Wilcoxson, Cleveland; seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Wendell Smith and the Rev. John A. Kilpatrick officiating.

Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery with grandsons, David Miolen, Scott Kilpatrick, John M. Kilpatrick, Stan Prophitt, Israel Prophitt and Jeremy Prophitt serving as pallbearers.

Thomas Porter

Thomas Reginald Porter, 72, of Chattanooga, passed away Sunday, June 15, 2008, in a local hospital.

He was a member of Edgewood Baptist Church and the Fellowship Sunday School Class. Mr. Porter was retired from the U.S. Coast Guard and had worked for U.S. Pipe and as a park ranger at the Tennessee Aquarium. He was founder of Tracts Inc., a gospel ministry that distributes gospel tracts.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Waymon Hoyet and Pearl Ida Lanning Porter; and a twin brother, Pastor Douglas Porter.

Survivors include his wife, Margie Shirley Porter; two sons, Mark T. Porter and wife, Kim and Michael D. Porter and wife, Anita; one daughter, Teri Lynn Kelley and husband, Philip; three granddaughters, Christina Porter, April Kelley and Tori Bryant; two sisters, Vivian "Jimmye" James and husband, Thomas and Brenda Gartman and husband, Bob; several nieces and nephews.

Louise Smith

Louise Smith, 95, of Chattanooga, passed away Tuesday, June 17, 2008, in a local nursing home.

Ruth Tate

Ruth Marie Tate, 94, of Chattanooga, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, June 17, 2008.

Ruth Marie Tate was born Dec. 10, 1913, to parents, Lee Vander and Mary Eleanor Lewis, 10th of 12 children. Her birthplace, Lewis Chapel, Tenn., was named for her father who served as postmaster and justice of the peace. He was a master carpenter, and the home place he built, around the turn of the century, remains standing today.

Learning her skills at her mother's knee, Ruth was a very talented seamstress. As a teenager she designed and sewed all her clothes, and went on to design and sew for her own children.

Ruth graduated from Sequatchie County High School, class of 1932, and took a job at Kresses. She enjoyed her independence as she roomed at the YWCA, taking advantage of their indoor pool and becoming a very good swimmer.

In 1937, Ruth married Lee Tate of Daus, Tenn. They spent 46 years together, he a Baptist minister, and she, a faithful and supportive wife. They raised five children, Lee Roy Tate, Eleanor Turner, Naomi Brown, Martha O'Neal and David Tate. She has 13 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

A longtime resident of Chattanooga and North Georgia, Mrs. Tate was a member of Brainerd Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Lee R. Tate Sr. and her son, Lee R. Tate Jr.

The family would like to express their appreciation to the wonderful staff at Life Care Center of Red Bank for the love and care they gave to Mrs. Tate.

Survivors are her daughters, Eleanor (Tom) Turner, Chattanooga, Naomi (George) Brown, Rossville, Martha (Jackie) O'Neal, Magnolia, Texas; son, David (Gail) Tate, Signal Mountain; sister, Mary Ellen Barker, Dunlap; 13 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Earl W. Wilkey, 81, of Chattanooga, passed away Tuesday, June 17, 2008, in a local hospital.

He was the owner of Earl Wilkey Drive Shaft and was a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving in WWII and Korea.

He was preceded in death by his grandson, Brian Wilkey; parents, J. Edgar and Pearl Wilkey; and a brother, Ralph Wilkey.

Survivors include his son, Mike Wilkey and wife, Susan; a special friend, Mary Dill; three sisters, Freida Sullivan, Betty Keith and her husband, Don and Naomi Miller; several nieces and nephews.

Carolyn Cochran

DAYTON -- Carolyn Mae Cochran, 58, died Tuesday, June 17, 2008, at Erlanger.

A lifelong resident of Rhea County, she was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and was of the Baptist faith.

She was preceded in death by a son, Johnathan Bean; father, Fennis Carl Rigsby.

Survivors: husband, Donnie Cochran, Dayton; mother, Kressie Rigsby, Dayton; four children, Carol Sue Cochran, Robert William Bean, Donald Cochran Jr., all of Dayton, Charles M. Cochran, Spring City, Tenn.; brother, David Rigsby, Pikeville, Tenn.; 10 grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

John Mayfield

SOUTH PITTSBURG -- John Douglas Mayfield, 82, passed away at his home, Tuesday, June 17, 2008, following an extended illness.

He was the son of the late William Arthur and Bertha Elizabeth Ladd Mayfield. He was a retired employee of Rogers Funeral Homes, having 31 years of service, assistant manager at Paul's Food Market for over 20 years, member of Wesley Methodist Church, former member and elder of South Pittsburg Cumberland Presbyterian Church, former worshipful master of Lodge 515 F&AM and served on the board of the Chester Powell Senior Apartments.

John was preceded in death by his wife, Nadine Gibson Mayfield; sisters, Frances Wileman, Doris Murray; and brothers, Albert, Raymond, Jerry and Tommy Mayfield.

He is survived by one daughter, Sanmy Jane Mayfield, South Pittsburg; brothers, William Arthur (Jean) Mayfield Jr., of Chattanooga and Bob (Louise) Mayfield, of South Pittsburg: sisters, Grace Coffelt, Lois Henley, both of Chattanooga, Pearl Rogers, of South Pittsburg and Jennie Lou Mayfield, of McMinnville; several nieces, nephews and special friends.

Services will be conducted from the South Pittsburg Chapel of Rogers Funeral Homes, Thursday, June 19, at 1 p.m. CDT with the Rev. Joe Moore, and the Rev. Bill Lassiter officiating and assisted by niece, Mary T. Newman; and nephew, Dan Mayfield.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ray Miller; parents, Horace and Miga Pryor Reeves; two sisters, Hazel Gass and Betty Barton; four brothers, Earl, Jack, Bob and Bill Reeves.

RINGGOLD -- Talmadge Dewey Noblitt, 81, passed away Monday, June 16, 2008, at a local hospital.

A resident of the Ringgold area for the past 45 years he was formerly of Kankakee, Ill. He was a former employee of Conquest Carpet and was of the Christian faith.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Ethel Marie Broome Noblitt; parents, Melvin and Florence Noblitt; three sisters, Stella Noblitt, Myrtle Thompson and Velma Noblitt; and three brothers, Billy Noblitt, Seldon Noblitt and Verlin Noblitt.

He is survived by one son, Talmadge Newberry, of Ringgold; five daughters, Rita Smartt, of Clayton, N.C., Brenda Wint, of LaFayette, Ga., Edith Clayton, of Tunnel Hill, Ga., Martha Bush, of Ringgold and Beverly Lane, of Ringgold; stepson and daughter-in-law, James and Wanda Newberry, of East Ridge; stepdaughter and son-in-law, Pat and Robert Prescott, of Tunnel Hill, Ga.; two sisters, Beatrice Lawrence and Shirley Noblitt, both of Alabama; two brothers, Kenneth Noblitt and Luther Noblitt, both of Alabama; 18 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Edward Wint Jr. officiating.

Interment will follow at Dailey Hills Cemetery.

The family will receive friends all day today and Thursday from 8 a.m. until funeral time at the funeral home.

Leroy Stacey

RINGGOLD -- Leroy Frank Stacey, 18, passed away Sunday, June 15, 2008, at a local hospital.

He was the son of Howard and Sharon Wiser. He was of the 2008 class of Lakeview–Fort Oglethorpe High and was to attend Northwestern Technical College. He was a member of Christ Fellowship in Ringgold where he served as drummer with the church praise team.

He is survived by his biological mother, Arlene Stacey; several aunts, uncles and cousins of Manchester, Tenn.; an aunt and grandmother, of Chattanooga and three stepbrothers and stepsisters, of Rossville.

Visitation will be in Christ Fellowship today from 5-9 p.m. and Thursday from 11 a.m.-2 p.m.

Dr. Ed Craft will conduct the funeral service on Thursday, June 19, at 2 p.m. in Christ Fellowship.

Interment will be in Anderson Cemetery, Ringgold.

Flowers or tax-deductable contributions toward funeral expenses, designated "Leroy", may be made to Christ Fellowship, 1176 N. Three Notch Road, Ringgold, GA 30736.

Shane Stoner

FAIRVIEW -- Michael Shane Stoner, 41, passed away Friday, June 6, 2008.

He was a lifelong resident of the Fairview Community and a member of Chattanooga Valley Baptist Church. He was previously employed by Talley Construction, Bill Higley Construction and Owens Construction as a heavy equipment operator.

He was proceeding in death by grandparents, James Pleas and Sarah Elizabeth Stone-Stoner, C.W. and Dawn Carter; and uncle, C.W. Carter Jr.

Survivors are wife, Carol Stoner; parents, Aubrey "Dick" and Linda Stoner; two stepdaughters, Paige Carter and Lexy Reeves.

Funeral services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at the South Crest Chapel of Lane Funeral Home & Crematory with the Rev. Ernest Gross officiating.

LaFAYETTE -- Robert Lee "George" Suttle passed away Tuesday morning, June 17, 2008, at his residence.
