RINGGOLD, Ga. — The post closure responsibility for maintaining the last landfill site in Catoosa County to be used for household garbage will likely shift from Allied Waste/BFI to Catoosa County this year, officials have learned.
County Finance Officer Carl Henson Jr. told the Catoosa Public Works Authority that the state Environmental Protection Division is expected to transfer the responsibility to the county.
The last section of the landfill was filled and closed in the fall of 2005, and county garbage service since then has been provided by Santek Envirronmental from a transfer station at the site.
“Allied Waste is working on site two to make it acceptable for the state environmental division to declare it ready for transfer to the county,” Olney Meadows, public works director said.
He said the site has been composted and planted with grass.
Gateway Landfill LLC was the final operator of site two. It was a subsidiary of Browning Ferris Industries, which is owned by Waste Management.
