Candace Avery

Tarva Candace Edwards Avery, 36, of Chattanooga, went to her heavenly home on Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2008, at her residence.

She was a member of New Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Haywood and Yvonne Edwards Jr.; sister, Geralyn Drew; nephew, Timothy Rivers; and half sister, Vivian Edwards.

Survivors: husband, Michael Avery; children, Nathan, Jeremy and Amber Avery; sister, Kimberly (John) Boyer; half brothers, Haywood III, Lebron and Jerome Edwards; aunts, Laura Eubanks, Erma Jean Morris, Elizabeth Finley, Charlene Battle and Marion Benford; nieces, Jessica Drew and Yvonne Boyer; nephew, Trabion Drew; great-nephews, Christian Rivers and JaCurrin Drew; brother-in-law, Toney Drew; a host of cousins, other relatives and friends.

Funeral: at 1 p.m. Monday at New Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church with Pastor Thomas Jones officiating.

Burial: Forest Hills Cemetery.

The body will lie in state today after noon at Taylor Funeral Home.

Faustina Bristol

Faustina F. Bristol, 90, of Chattanooga, passed away Thursday, Feb. 28, 2008.

She was a native of Henderson County, Tenn., and a graduate of Lexington High School class of 1935. Her husband, Herbert worked for the Tennessee Valley Authority for many years and they traveled extensively until settling in Chattanooga in 1950. In 1951, she and Sally Aycock opened The Sallina Shop and were joined by Faustina's daughter, Donna from 1983 to 1998. She was a faithful member of Brainerd Baptist Church and past president of the Grace Sunday School Class.

Mrs. Bristol was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Herbert A. Bristol.

Survivors include her daughter, Donna B. Akers and husband, David, of Chattanooga; one grandson, James R. Akers and wife, Kindra, of Chattanooga; one brother, Hugh L. Fesmire and wife, Mitchell, of Lexington, Tenn.; one niece and two nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 12:30 p.m. Monday at Brainerd Baptist Church with the Rev. George Clark and the Rev. Mark Mims officiating.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Grace Sunday School Class.

Burial will be in Chattanooga National Cemetery.

Carleton Bryant III

Carleton E. "Carl" Bryant III, 81, of Hixson, passed away on Saturday, March 1, 2008, in the company of his wife of 51 years, Betty, and their children.

What a great guy!

He enjoyed cruises with his wife, family and friends; vacationing with his wife, children, and grandchildren at the Florida beaches and the Outer Banks; and playing cards and golf at Valleybrook.

Carl served in the Korean conflict and received an honorable discharge from the U.S. Navy. Born in New Rochelle, N.Y., he graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute as an electrical engineer, was a specialist in lighting sales and retired from Westinghouse Electric. He continued to enjoy employment with Randy Yoder at Yoder-Brickey Sales, working through last week. His lights shine everywhere.

While he will be greatly missed, he leaves many wonderful memories. He taught important life lessons by the life he lived and treated everyone with kindness and respect.

Carl was preceded in death by his parents, Carleton E. Bryant Jr. and Irene Walber Bryant.

Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth "Betty" Bryant, of 51 years; his son, Carleton E. "Butch" Bryant IV, and his wife, Reba and their children Abby and Tiffany; his son, Dean C. Bryant, and his wife, Joann; and his daughter, Jill S. Bryant and her son, Adam Bryant Roddy.

The family will receive his friends at the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home Highway 153, Hixson, on Monday, March 3, 2008, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

A celebration of Carl's life will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, March 4, 2008, at the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home with the Rev. Don Allison, an old family friend, officiating.

Thomas Carey

Thomas Boyd Carey, 70, of Mowbray Mountain, passed away Thursday, Feb. 28, 2008.

He proudly served in the U.S. Army.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Demps and Nola Harris Carey; brothers, Eugene "Gabe" Carey and Floyd Carey.

He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Stephanie and Mark Rogers, Hixson; daughter, Connie Mines, Soddy-Daisy; sister and brother-in-law, Nell and Archie Skiles, Soddy-Daisy; sister and brother-in law, Barbara and Ben DeBord, Pikeville, Tenn.; grandchildren, Harvest Mines, Harrison Rogers, Kirstie Rogers; beloved nieces and nephews, Cindy, Beverly, Helen, Johnny and Barry.

The funeral service will be 2 p.m. today, March 2, 2008, graveside, in Granny Walker Cemetery with the Rev. Aaron Simmons officiating.

Fred Edward Colquitt Jr., 62, of Chattanooga, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2008, at his home.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. He graduated from Tyner High School in 1963. He earned an AS degree from Chattanooga State Technical Community College in 1989, cum laude.

He was a member of Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his father, Fred Edward Colquitt Sr.; mother, Jeanette Brooks Colquitt; and sister, Kathy Colquitt.

Survivors include his wife of 33 years, Bonnie U. Colquitt, of Chattanooga; sister, Jean Bush, of Leander, Texas; sister and brother-in-law, Nancy and Geames Guyton, of Macon, Ga.; sister, Freda Johnson, of Macon; daughter and son-in-law, Brooke and Zach Ingle, of Chattanooga; two granddaughters, Haylee and Hannah Ingle; aunt, Josephine Ross, of Kingston, Ga.; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews; and many close friends.

Wilma Gerelene Davis, 84, of Soddy-Daisy, passed away on Thursday, Feb. 28, 2008, at her home.

She was a member of Calvary Independent Baptist Church.

Survivors include four children, Nathan Davis, Delerah Kuhn, Diane Exman and Elizabeth McBee; nine grandchildren, Melinda Bell, Nathan Davis, Richard Kuhn, Mary Crutcher, Kenny Whisenant, Lisa Franklin, Danielle Whisenant, Melissa Conner and Jamison McBee; 19 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Bob, Larry and Donnie Johnson; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. today, March 2, 2008, at the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home with the Rev. Donald S. Kelley officiating.

Interment will follow in Hamilton Memorial Gardens.

Sarah Dawson

Sarah R. Dawson, 86, of Chattanooga, passed away Friday, Feb. 29, 2008, at a local health care facility.

She was a member of Tyner United Methodist Church and the Chancel Choir. Sarah also worked as a volunteer receptionist with the church.

She retired from BellSouth after 41 years of service.

She was the daughter of the late Stephens A. and Nettie Mae Rush and was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Ereath Dawson.

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Jane D. and Stan Haynes, of Ooltewah; grandson, Michael David Haynes; and two aunts, Belle Rann, of Chattanooga, Emily Reid, of Rome, Ga.

Graveside services will be held noon Monday at Greenwood Cemetery with the Rev. Grady Cooper officiating.

Juanita Deal

Juanita G. Deal, 88, of Hixson, passed away Friday, Feb. 29, 2008, at her home.

She was a native and lifelong resident of the Chattanooga area, a loving mother and grandmother.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Louie Deal.

Cleveland "Brother" Edwards, of Chattanooga, died Monday, Feb. 25, 2008.

He retired from U.S. Army after 28 years. He retired from TVA and worked at Pruett until they closed.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Cleveland and Essie "Few" Edwards; one sister Rosetta Edwards; two nephews, Ernest "Bugger" Vaughn Jr., Darrell Richardson; and one brother-in-law, Ernest Vaughn Sr.

Martina E. Emerling, 76, of Soddy-Daisy, passed away on Thursday, Feb. 28, 2008, at a local hospital.

Eric Ferguson

Eric A. Ferguson, 61, died Friday, Feb. 29, 2008, of mesothelioma.

He was a 1964 graduate of Red Bank High School. Mr. Ferguson worked 11 years in Oak Ridge, Tenn., for Union Carbide. He was a graduate of UTK, MS computer science in 1973, worked at Provident Life and Accident from 1979 to 2000 and retired from Unum.

He was preceded in death by his father, Guy Ferguson.

Survivors include his wife, Stephanie Ferguson; children, Michael Ferguson, Ph.D., of Memphis, Mitchell Ferguson, of Hixson, USAF Staff Sgt. Tommy Ronald Fryar Jr., 39, of Ooltewah, formerly of Lawrenceville, Ga. was called to be with the Lord on Friday, Feb. 29, 2008.

He was a graduate of Ooltewah High School class of 1987, he attended UTC and was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity. He was employed at Alston & Bird, an Atlanta law firm.

Tom is survived by his wife, Tanya Cooper Fryar; parents, Tommy and Brenda Coley Fryar; in-laws, Ron and Estella Cooper; sister, Kelli (Doug) Brown; brother, Bryan (Leigh Ann) Fryar; nephews, Will Brown, Coley Fryar; grandfather, James Coley; aunts, Lyndie Fryar, Delores Pack, Gail Johnson and Shrah Land; and great-aunt, Vera Nichols; and many cousins.

Ivan Harding Graves, 75, of Apison, passed away Saturday, March 1, 2008, at his home.

He was a member of Collegedale Seventh-day Adventist Church and a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was retired from plant services at Southern Adventist University.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Dean Graves and Marvin Graves.

Michael Hicks, of Chattanooga, passed away Saturday, March 1, 2008, at his residence.

James Hutton

James C. "Jack" Hutton, 85, of Soddy-Daisy, died on Thursday, Feb. 28, 2008.

Mr. Hutton was born at Guild, Tenn., on March 16, 1922, the son of Charlie and Eliza Hutton.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, retired iron worker and a member of Iron Workers Local 704 from 1947 to 2008, 61 years.

He was a lifetime member of Alhambra Shrine and lifetime member of the Alhambra clown unit.

Mr. Hutton was preceded in death by his mother and father, three sisters and two brothers.

Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Mary Potts Hutton; son, James "Jimmy" Hutton; daughter, Marian Hutton Kelley; one brother, Chester E. Hutton; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, March 3, 2008, at Chattanooga National Cemetery with the Rev. Billy Dean officiating.

Interment will be Chattanooga National Cemetery.

Thomas Lloyd

Thomas Evander Lloyd departed the earthly realm on Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2008.

He was known to many as Tom and to others as "See More" because of his height of 6 feet 7 inches.

He was a product of Hamilton County Schools and a 1950 graduate of Howard High School. An alumni of Dillard University, Tom attended Tennessee State, UTC and Trevecca Nazerene. He was a social worker, coach and teacher for 35 years before his retirement in 1993.

Tom was a two-time military veteran, an avid sports lover and proud 50-year member of Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity, an achievement that greatly pleased him. He was a member of Cleages Chapel Church, where he participated as a trustee and active member until his health failed.

Tom was preceded in death by his mother, Julia King Lloyd Moulder; his father, Jimmie Lloyd; and stepfather, Johnny Moulder, who helped rear him.

Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Nan; a son, Evander Lloyd (Belinda); two stepdaughters, Cecily Nannette (Arthur) Chaney and Patricia L. ( Kenneth) Hartley; grandsons, Evander Jr., Akil Lloyd, Franklin Graham, Thomas Graham, Patrick Howard; and a granddaughter, Pamela (George) Williamson; great-grandchildren, Alexander Lloyd, Autum Lloyd, Jaliah Lloyd, Gabrielle Williamson and Ezekiel Graham; cousins, including Wallace and Maudlin Bridgeman, Leandria and Gordon Thomas, James, Randall, Lula and Darlyne Bridgeman; devoted friends, Paul and Betty Calloway, Raymond and Glenna Swafford, Gertrude Conley, Ada Fletcher and Lepolious Miller Jr.; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Kenneth Winn

Kenneth E. Winn, 80, of Chattanooga, passed away Friday, Feb. 29, 2008, in a local hospital.

A native of Scottsboro, Ala., he had spent most of his life in the Rossville and Chattanooga areas and was retired from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Mr. Winn was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Navy.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Doris Winn.

Survivors include his children, Steve (Joyce) Winn, Chattanooga, Jerry (Peggy) Winn, of Hixson, and Ricky Winn, of Rossville; grandchildren, Jeffrey, Stephanie, Sarah, Matthew and Ashley; great-grandson, Trevor.

Bill Zumwalt

William Thornton Zumwalt, 92, passed away Thursday, Feb. 28, 2008, in a local hospital.

A resident of Chattanooga for the past 40 years, Mr. Zumwalt was a member of First Presbyterian Church. He served in the Navy during WWII and achieved the rank of captain. He was an electrical engineer and retired as director of Power Systems Operations at TVA in 1976.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John J. and Irene Thornton Zumwalt; and his wife of 64 years, Charlton Zumwalt.

He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Judith G. and David Duncan, Auburn, Calif.; sons and daughters-in-law, Jim and May Louise Zumwalt, Paducah, Ky., and Robert T. and Barbara Zumwalt, Duluth, Ga.; five grandchildren, Marcus Zumwalt, Nathan Zumwalt, Amanda Rogers, Laura Duncan and Jennifer Archuleta; and three great-grandchildren, Audra, Asher and Micah Zumwalt; and brother, Bob Zumwalt, Houston, Texas.

Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Monday at Heritage Funeral Home chapel with Ben Haden, the Rev. Ken Camp and Dr. Paul Ritch officiating.

Lois Denton

DAYTON -- Mary Lois Denton, 92, died Friday, Feb. 29, 2008, in Rhea Medical Center.

Lois was born on Evensville Mountain on June 21, 1915, the daughter of the late Charlie and Amanda Henderson Brown.

Lois was a lifelong Rhea County resident, where she was employed at Robinson Manufacturing for 43 years. Lois was a member of the Concord Union Church and served as a volunteer at Rhea Medical Center for 42 years.

She also was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Denton; brother, Luther Brown; and sisters, Rebecca Dunn, Bertha Mackie and Ollie Jenkins.

Lois is survived by her stepson, Dan (Anna) Denton, of Dayton; stepdaughter, Mary Kate (Carles) Phillips, of Norris, Tenn.; sister, Nica Glab, of Red Bank; two stepgrandsons; two stepgreat-grandchildren; and one stepgreat-great-grandson.

Funeral services for Lois will be held at 4 p.m. Monday in the funeral home chapel with her pastor, the Rev. Shane Johnston, officiating.

Burial will follow next to her husband in Buttram Cemetery.

Polly Dietzen

JASPER -- Polly Ann Lawson Dietzen, 85, died Saturday, March 1, 2008, at her home.

She was the daughter of the late Byron Kirk and Matilda Housley Lawson and attended Faith Baptist Church. She loved to cook and delighted in feeding anyone who came by. She worked outside the home in her early years, but her life's work was being a mother and grandmother. She devoted herself to her home, husband, children and later her grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her son, James Robert Dietzen; brothers, Marvin "Pete" Lawson, Paul David Lawson, Tom Lawson, Jimmy Don Lawson and Byron K. "Cotton" Lawson Jr.; and sister, Billie Jo Morgan.

She leaves to cherish her memory two daughters, Margaret Hood and Stella (Wayne) Long, both of Jasper; granddaughters, Lisa (Mike) Kirkendoll, Tracie (Chris) Allender, Jackie (Matt) Kilgore, Jana (Daniel) Massengale, all of Jasper; great-grandchildren, Hannah and Alex Kirkendoll, Jimmie Kilgore, Jake and Jared Allender, Caleb and Eli Massengale; sister, Larue Couch, of Red Bank; special friends, Judy Brewer, Sue Lawhorn, Ruby Hammons, all of Jasper, Virginia Haskew, Frieda Mason and Inez Killian, all of South Pittsburg, Tenn.; several nieces and nephews.

The family wants to especially thank Fran, David, Denise and Jennifer from Home Healthcare of East Tennessee and Hospice for the loving care they provided to Mrs. Dietzen.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. CST on Monday, March 3, 2008, from the Jasper Chapel of Rogers Funeral Home with the Rev. Robert Hood officiating.

Oleta Dunworth

PIKEVILLE -- Oleta W. Dunworth, 86, passed away at an area hospital on Saturday, March 1, 2008.

She was born in St. Petersburg, Fla., and resided in Fort Lauderdale until returning to Bledsoe County 41 years ago. She was of the Methodist faith and taught school at Dill Elementary. Oleta was a member of the Bledsoe County Retired Teachers Association and the American Society of Clinical Pathologists. She touched many young lives through her work as a special education teacher.

Oleta was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Damon W. Dunworth; and parents, Samuel and Ethel Williams.

She is survived and will be sorely missed by her son, Stanley (Sandy) Dunworth, Trenton, Fla.; daughters, Denise (Gene) Gillette, Dayton, Tenn., and Robin (James) Thompson, Pikeville, Tenn.; 11 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; eight nieces and nephews.

A celebration of her life will be held at 1 p.m. CST on Tuesday, March 4, in the chapel of Pikeville Funeral Home with the Rev. Jan Harlow officiating.

Burial will be in Summer City Cemetery followed by a white dove release.

The family will receive friends from 6-9 p.m. CST on Monday.

ROSSVILLE -- Robert Richard Ashley Jr., 81, passed away Saturday, March 1, 2008, at Shepherd Hills Nursing Home.

He was a lifelong resident of Chattanooga and the North Georgia area. He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Navy and retired from Central Soya Manufacturing Co. following several years of service. He was a member of Simpson Memorial United Methodist Church and a member of the Friendship Class.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Richard Ashley Sr. and Willie Bishop Ashley; his wife, Elma Ann Darby Ashley; a brother, Melvin Ashley; and a sister, Margaret Couch.

Survivors include two sons, Richard Thomas Ashley and Benjamin Alan Ashley, both of Chickamauga, Ga.; two daughters, Robbie Ann Brown and Leissa Ashley Boyle, both of Rossville; one brother, Jerry Ashley, of Rossville; one sister, Caroline Yancey, of Rock Spring; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 9 a.m. Tuesday in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. David Harr and the Rev. Natalie Smart officiating.

Interment will follow in the Chattanooga National Cemetery.

LaFAYETTE -- Edith Artelia Butler Johnson, 89, of Huddleston, Va., passed away Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2008.

She was born Sept. 4, 1918, to the late Emory and Amanda Reynolds Butler in Sand Mountain, Ga. She spent most of her life in Northwest Georgia and was of the Baptist faith.

Edith was also preceded in death by her husband, John S. Johnson Jr.; son, John Daniel Johnson; and seven siblings, Theodore, Cleo, Fannie, James, Lillian, Hoyt and Fred.

Survivors include three daughters and one son-in-law, Barbara Scout, of Elsmere, Del., Phyllis Thomas, of Jacksonville, Fla., Sharon and Steve McCallum, of Huddleston, Va.; seven grandchildren; many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, March 3, 2008, in the funeral home chapel.

CHICKAMAUGA -- Sallie Mae Pendergrass, 82, went to be with her Lord and Savior, Thursday, Feb. 28, 2008, and to meet her beloved husband of 58 years, V.H. Pendergrass.

She passed away surrounded by family members and pastors while under the loving care of Hospice of Chattanooga at Memorial Hospital.

Sallie's greatest joy was her family. She worked tirelessly cooking and gardening to provide delicious meals and allow the children to learn from and enjoy the fruits of their labor.

She was under the ministry of C.L. Harbin, Calvary's Cross Church of God. She loved gospel music. Church was her passion where she loved to praise and worship our Lord.

She is survived by her devoted daughters, Kathy Bates and husband, Wade, Chickamauga, Jewell Guffey and husband, Ken, Soddy-Daisy, and Carolyn Fricks and husband, Tony, Chickamauga. She was the proud grandmother of Sharon Martin, Ooltewah, Greg Fricks, Jacksonville, Fla., Lance and Matt Bates, Chickamauga and Rebecca Tucker, Chickamauga; six great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and dearest friend, Ovella Coley and husband, Jess.

Mother was truly a remarkable, self-sacrificing lady. Our hearts will be empty without her presence.

Services were held Saturday, followed by burial at Tennessee-Georgia Memorial Gardens.

She was born on Jan. 1, 1924, to the late George Lee and Effie Estell Brock Kennemer. She was a resident of LaFayette for the past 60 years and was a member of Grace Baptist Tabernacle in Rock Spring, Ga.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth George Thomas; brother, Raymond Kennemer; and a sister, Lois Kessler.

She is survived by her son, Johnny Lamar O'Barr, of Fort Walton Beach, Fla.; daughter and son-in-law, Jamie Linda and Joseph Bergbauer, of Dallas, Ga.; grandchildren, Christy Michelle Miller, Katrina Lynn Bergbauer, Teresa Dawn Hale, Joseph Thomas Bergbauer; seven great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

ROSSVILLE -- James Franklin "Hoss" Young, 64, passed away Friday, Feb. 29, 2008.

He was born in Ringgold, Ga. on July 19, 1943, to the late William and Nannie Mae Young. He was a lifelong resident of the North Georgia area and was of the Baptist faith.

He was an Army veteran of the Vietnam War and enjoyed woodworking.

He also was preceded in death by his two brothers, Grover and Clyde Young; and two sisters, Ruby Edgeman and Lois Hale.

Survivors include his two daughters and son-in-law, Tammy Young and Tina and Dale Bradley, all of Rossville; sister, Norma Jean Smith, of LaFayette, Ga.; significant other, Lisa Whittaker, of Rossville; and nine grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 4, 2008, in the Chattanooga National Cemetery with Pastor Darrell VanHorn officiating.
