Cathryn Miles and Henry Mitchell are concerned with the impact of progress on the environment. An exhibition of their work, “Progress,” can be seen at River Gallery through March 31.
Ms. Miles, an oil painter from Georgia, focuses on figures in urban settings. Working from quick, on-site sketches made during her travels to Europe, Mexico and throughout the United States, she builds and completes her final compositions in her studio at home. Imagery is ambiguous in regard to detail, but when viewed at a distance the patterns and linear framework come into focus to illustrate her subject matter. Mr. Mitchell, a sculptor from South Carolina, works with wood to construct fluid, abstract forms that reference “the shapes of land and the living creatures that move upon on it.”
“My work is not complicated,” he says in his artist’s statement. “It is about the material from which it is made: wood from trees cut to make space for malls
and freeways, yet leaving behind enduring forms which reflect the deep and abiding forces that shape us all — land, trees, animals and people.” A reception for “Progress” will be held Friday from 6:30 to 8 p.m. River Gallery, corner of Bluff View and High streets, is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday, 1 to 5 p.m. on Sunday and by appointment.
