Carleton Bryant III
Carleton E. "Carl" Bryant III, 81, of Hixson, passed away on Saturday, March 1, 2008, in the company of his wife of 51 years, Betty, and their children.
What a great guy!
He enjoyed cruises with his wife, family and friends; vacationing with his wife, children and grandchildren at the Florida beaches and the Outer Banks; and playing cards and golf at Valleybrook.
Carl served in the Korean conflict and received an honorable discharge from the U.S. Navy. Born in New Rochelle, N.Y., he graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute as an electrical engineer, was a specialist in lighting sales and retired from Westinghouse Electric. He continued to enjoy employment with Randy Yoder at Yoder-Brickey Sales, working through last week. His lights shine everywhere.
While he will be greatly missed, he leaves many wonderful memories. He taught important life lessons by the life he lived and treated everyone with kindness and respect.
Carl was preceded in death by his parents, Carleton E. Bryant Jr. and Irene Walber Bryant.
Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth "Betty" Bryant, of 51 years; his son, Carleton E. "Butch" Bryant IV, and his wife, Reba, and their children Abby and Tiffany; his son, Dean C. Bryant, and his wife, Joann; and his daughter, Jill S. Bryant and her son, Adam Bryant Roddy.
The family will receive his friends, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today, March 3, 2008, at the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, Highway 153, Hixson.

Tommy Fryar Jr.
Tommy Ronald Fryar Jr., 39, of Ooltewah, formally of Lawrenceville, Ga. was called to be with the Lord on Friday, Feb. 29, 2008.
He was a graduate of Ooltewah High School class of 1987, he attended UTC and was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity. He was employed at Alston & Bird, an Atlanta Law Firm.
Tom is survived by his wife, Tanya Cooper Fryar; parents, Tommy and Brenda Coley Fryar; in-laws, Ron and Estella Cooper; sister, Kelli (Doug) Brown; brother, Bryan (Leigh Ann) Fryar; nephews, Will Brown, Coley Fryar; grandfather, James Coley. Aunts, Lyndie Fryar, Delores Pack, Gail Johnson and Sarah Land; and great-aunt, Vera Nichols; and many cousins.
Tom was loved and remembered by his family as a talented and wonderful young man, with a superb intellect that was reflected in all he did. In his presence you knew you were with someone special.

Esther S. Thornton Lucas, 101, of Chattanooga, died Friday, Feb. 29, 2008.
She was a lifelong resident of the city and worked for many years as a beautician.
She was a member of Cleage Chapel AME Zion Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers; four sisters; and her husband, Clyde Lucas.

Dan McBroom
Dan D. McBroom, 84, of Collegedale, passed away Friday, Feb. 29, 2008, at his residence.
He was a member of Collegedale Seventh-day Adventist Church and was a World War II veteran, having served in the U.S. Navy.
Dan retired as assistant manager of the College Press.
He was the son of the late John Franklin McBroom and Vesta King McBroom and was preceded in death by two children, Dr. David Bryan McBroom and Beverly Ruane.
Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Myra McBroom; daughter and son-in-law, Dianne (Richard) Rey, of Okemos, Mich.; two granddaughters, Stephanie Rey Worboys and Pamela Alcorn; and two great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Chattanooga National Cemetery with Pastor Alex Bryan officiating. Military rites will be conducted at the cemetery.
There will be no visitation at the funeral home.

Grace Louise Owens, 81, of Chattanooga, passed away Thursday, Feb. 28, 2008, in a local hospital.
She was formerly employed as an LPN at Erlanger hospital. She was a member of Orchard Knob Missionary Baptist Church.

Ollie M. Burgess Parker, 88, of Chattanooga, passed away on Sunday, March 2, 2008, in a local health care facility.
Mrs. Parker, fondly known to all as "Mom," was the owner and operator of Mom's Italian Villa restaurant on Market Street in downtown Chattanooga for many years. An asset to our community, she received a certificate of appreciation for outstanding contributions to the community from Hamilton County.
Survivors include a daughter, Dorothy (George) Shuford, of Georgetown, Tenn.; a son, Charles David (Elaine) Parker, of Bluffton, S.C.; four grandchildren, Randy (Allyson) Shuford, of Chattanooga, Peggy (Jim) Coons, of Fort Mill, S.C., Steven (Jennifer) Parker, of Tampa, Fla., Gary (Lisa) Shuford, of Chattanooga; sister, Geneva Thompson, of New Jersey; three brothers, Foster Burgess, of Florida, Kent Burgess, of Nashville, and Carl Burgess, of Ohio; several great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Leona Smartt Poe, 91, of Hixson, passed away Saturday, March 1, 2008, in a local hospital.
Mrs. Poe was born in Chattanooga to Oscar Lee and Dovie Bell Smartt. She was a lifelong resident of the Chattanooga area and was retired from the Chattanooga Credit Bureau. She was a member of Dallas Bay Baptist Church.

Newman; grandchildren, Michael Tatum, of San Rafael, Calif., Martin McGee, of Ringgold, Ga., and Kelly M. John Harrison Roddy, 95, of Soddy-Daisy, passed away Saturday, March 1, 2008, at his daughter's home in Flintville, Tenn.
Mr. Roddy retired from Central Soya. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during World War II.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Doris Lorena Harding Roddy; his son, Richard D. "Mickey" Roddy; his parents, Elbert D. and Mary E. Holder Roddy; his sisters, Mae Donnelson, Jesse Lockaby, Ruby Nelson, Edith Drennon, Willie Roddy and Mildred Roddy; and his brothers, Ralph, Doug and Morris Roddy.

Lloyd Ray Smith, 73, went to be with the Lord early Saturday morning, March 1, 2008, at his home in Chattanooga.
Lloyd Ray was born June 6, 1934, in Epps, La.
A born-again Christian, Lloyd Ray lived a happy life full of wild adventures and huge accomplishments. Though known by the local community for his service to the Special Olympics program, he was known by his family as the most wonderful dad, husband and grandfather one could ever hope to have.
Preceding him in death was his beloved wife of 24 years, Carole Smith.
He is survived by his children Lloyd Ray "Buddy" Smith II, Gabe Walker Smith, Timmy Conner, Dennis Conner, Tracee Randall and Wendy Leaumont; his siblings, Shirley Benson and Harold Smith; his several grandchildren; and his loving companion, Leona Dunn.

DAYTON -- Mary Lois Denton, 92, died Friday, Feb. 29, 2008, in Rhea Medical Center.
Lois was born on Evensville Mountain on June 21, 1915, the daughter of the late Charlie and Amanda Henderson Brown.
Lois was a lifelong Rhea County resident where she was employed at Robinson Manufacturing for 43 years. Lois was a member of Concord Union Church and served as a volunteer at Rhea Medical Center for 42 years.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Jack Denton; brother, Luther Brown; and sisters, Rebecca Dunn, Bertha Mackie and Ollie Jenkins.
Lois is survived by her stepson, Dan (Anna) Denton, of Dayton; stepdaughter, Mary Kate (Carles) Phillips, of Norris, Tenn.; sister, Nica Glab, of Red Bank; two stepgrandsons; two stepgreat-grandchildren; and one stepgreat-great-grandson.
Funeral services for Lois will be held today at 4 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with her pastor, the Rev. Shane Johnston officiating.

JASPER -- Polly Ann Lawson Dietzen, 85, died Saturday, March 1, 2008, at her home.
She was the daughter of the late Byron Kirk and Matilda Housley Lawson and attended Faith Baptist Church. She loved to cook and delighted in feeding anyone who came by. She worked outside the home in her early years, but her life's work was being a mother and grandmother. She devoted herself to her home, husband, children and later her grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her son, James Robert Dietzen; brothers, Marvin "Pete" Lawson, Paul David Lawson, Tom Lawson, Jimmy Don Lawson and Byron K. "Cotton" Lawson Jr.; and sister, Billie Jo Morgan.
She leaves to cherish her memory, two daughters, Margaret Hood and Stella (Wayne) Long, both of Jasper; granddaughters, Lisa (Mike) Kirkendoll, Tracie (Chris) Allender, Jackie (Matt) Kilgore, Jana (Daniel) Massengale, all of Jasper; great-grandchildren, Hannah and Alex Kirkendoll, Jimmie Kilgore, Jake and Jared Allender, Caleb and Eli Massengale; sister, Larue Couch, of Red Bank; special friends, Judy Brewer, Sue Lawhorn, Ruby Hammons, all of Jasper, Virginia Haskew, Frieda Mason and Inez Killian, all of South Pittsburg, Tenn.; several nieces and nephews.

She was born in Columbus, Ga. to the late Claud and Sarah Josephine McNutt, but has lived in the North Georgia area for most of her life. She was of the Baptist faith and was a devoted mother, grandmother and friend.
She was also preceded in death by their children's father, Thomas "Don" Smith; grandson, Aaron Wright and three brothers, Harold, Sam and Bill McNutt.

Flora Croft
FORT OGLETHORPE -- Flora Croft, 76, died Saturday, March 1, 2008, at her residence.
She was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church and was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene Croft.
Survivors include her children, Janice Usery, Rossville, Larry Croft, Kentucky, Dennis Croft, East Ridge; sister, Glenda Erwin, Rossville; brother, Mark Davis, Ohio; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday in the chapel with the Rev. Chris Peponis officiating.
Interment will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in National Cemetery.

CHICKAMAUGA -- James Louis Daniel, 67, went with the Angels home to Heaven Saturday, March 1, 2008.
He was of the Baptist faith. Mr. Daniel was a veteran.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Vernon and Alta Daniel; son, Michael Arlon Daniel; sisters, Wilma Daniel, Shirley Hodge; brothers, Junior Daniel, Hershall Lee Daniel, Richard Daniel.
Survived by his wife, Myrna Daniel; stepdaughters, Jerilynn Griffith, South Pittsburg, Bonny Case, Tampa; son James Shannon Daniel, Chickamauga; stepson, Gearld Case Jr., South Pittsburg; sisters, Mildred Guinn, Centre, Ala., Verna Mae Ridley, Rising Fawn, Betty Nowak, Valley Head; brothers, Wilford Daniel, Rising Fawn, Max Daniel, Chickamauga; 10 grandchildren; two great- grandchildren; several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral at 1 p.m. today at the Wallis Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Richard Cordell and the Rev. Leon Hall officiating.

TRION -- Walter Haney, 80, died Sunday, March 2, 2008.

Fred Henry
LaFAYETTE -- Fred B. Henry died at home on Saturday, March 1, 2008, from congestive heath failure. He was 90 years old.
Fred was a lifelong resident of Walker County, Ga. He graduated from LaFayette High School and then attended Emory University at Oxford, Ga. He was a major in the U. S. Army Air Corp. during World War II where he served in North Africa, Sicily, Italy, Egypt, India and China. Fred spent more than 70 years in the life insurance business and owned Fred Henry Agency located on the square in LaFayette. He was active in his community, his church and was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather.
Fred was preceded in death by his parents, John Bryant Henry and Louise Eubanks Henry; and by his siblings, Selman Henry, Martha Pitner and Mildred Smith.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Emily Chapman Henry; his three children, Bryant (Nita) Henry, Marilyn (Tom) Taylor and Philip (Sue) Henry; four grandchildren, Jeff Gibson, Scott Gibson, Elissa (Kevin) Lorenzen and Alexander Henry. He had one great-granddaughter, Isabel Lorenzen; a niece, several nephews; great-nieces and nephews and many cousins.
Funeral: 2 p.m. Tuesday at the LaFayette First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Don Underwood and Dr. Ned Giles officiating.
Pallbearers are Neal Florence, Alexander Griffin, Steve Ledbetter, Larry Martin, Maurice McConnell, Terry Morgan, Randy Street and Bo Wood.

WEST POINT, Va. -- Vickie Loretta Wooten Galloway, 72, passed away on Saturday, March 1, 2008, at Sentara Health Center.
She was born on March 3, 1935, in Camden County, N.C. to the late Matthew and Hazel Wooten. A long time resident of James City County, Mrs. Galloway was an employee of W-JCC Public Schools for over 22 years.
For many years, she provided home care for area children and lovingly became known to all as Nanny Vickie. Her talents were many, but her greatest were unconditional love, wisdom on life and the support she gave to family and all who knew her.
As a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, she will be greatly missed by all.
Preceded in death by her infant son, James Marion Galloway Jr. and husband of 50 years, James Marion Galloway. Also preceded in death were three sisters, Jewel Whitehurst, Vernia Mae Balue, Janet Allen; and two brothers, James Adam Wooten and Richard Kenny Wooten.
She is survived by her daughters, Marrian "Rita" West and Jeanette Lockhart and special son-in-law, Wayne, all of Toano, Va.; grandchildren, Michelle Jones and husband, Anthony, of New Kent, Va., Timothy Lockhart and wife, Jessica, Jason West and wife, Ruth, of King and Queen, Va., Amber Lockhart and fiance, John Bateman, of Toano, Va., and Janie Phillips and husband, Josh, of West Point, Va.; great-grandchildren include Andrew, McKenzie, Holden, Tyler, Kaleb, Madison, Olivia, Cole and Camden; brothers, Matthew "Cotton" Wooten and wife, Ann, John "Stack" Wooten and wife, Doris Ann, all of Lanexa, Va.; sisters, Juanita Galloway, of Trenton, Ga., Ann Carneal and husband, Harold, of Middlesex, Va, Barbara Deskins, of West Point, Va., Linda Dickens and husband, Albert, of Chesapeake, Va., Ruby Wilkerson and husband, James, of Lanexa, Va.; a host of loving nieces and nephews; special friends Ada and Elton Fauber, Carolyn and Ken Hill and Linda and Johnny Crump.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. EST Wednesday in the Ryan Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. James Hixon officiating.
