Chattanooga Police Department juvenile detectives are investigating an alleged assault between two McCallie School students that left one of them unconscious, said department spokeswoman Lt. Kim Noorbergen.
Officers were called to the Dodds Avenue school’s gym around 3:15 p.m. Sunday to follow up on an aggravated assault report, Lt. Noorbergen said. When police arrived, they found a 14-year-old male student unconscious and unresponsive, she said.
The students had apparently gotten into a verbal argument over a whiffle ball game, police said. The fight became physical, with one of the students hitting the other and knocking him unconscious.
That student was taken to T.C. Thompson Children’s Hospital, where he was admitted with a serious head injury, according to Lt. Noorbergen. However, she said, his condition is improving and he is being moved into a private room.
Both of the students involved in the fight were first-year students at McCallie, Lt. Noorbergen said. Their names were not released due to their age.
Charges have not been filed against either student, but investigations into the incident are continuing, the lieutenant said.
