Tanker truck overturns

Staff Photo by Brett Clark-- Workers from Marion Environmental pump diesel fuel from an overturned tanker into the recovery tanker on the entrance ramp to Highway 27 this morning, as a fireman stands ready as a precautionary measure.

Chattanooga firefighters are still on the scene of an overturned tanker truck at the intersection of 21st and Williams Street.

Around 6:30 this morning, the 18-wheeler overturned on the on-ramp to Highway 27 East.

Capt. Danny Hague with the Chattanooga Fire Department’s hazardous materials team said the tanker is carrying approximately 5,000 gallons of diesel fuel. The fuel is leaking out of three dome lids on the tanker, so the firefighters are digging a temporary retention pond to contain the leak.

Capt. Hague said the plan is to off-load the fuel onto another tanker truck, and then upright the overturned truck. Capt. Hague said this operation could take several hours.

The only road that is completely closed off is the on-ramp from Broad and Williams streets to Highway 27 East.
