Cleveland State tops Volunteer State

A balanced offense that featured six players with eight or more points paced Cleveland State to a 76-54 win over Volunteer State in the TJCCAA Region VII women’s basketball tournament at Morristown, Tenn.

Ragan Elliot had team highs with 13 points and eight rebounds for Cleveland State (18-10), which got 11 points from Kelly Warden and 10 from Angie Wells. Tranisha Benton scored a game-high 20 for Volunteer State (7-20), which made just 16 of 64 (25 percent) of its shots from the field.

In other TJCCAA Region VII tournament action, Saint Catharine had three players in double figures — paced by Reena Halliburton’s 22 points — in a 72-61 win over Hiwassee. Lauren Reed scored 15 and Erin Rogers added 12 for Saint Catharine (13-9).

Natasha Eddings had a game-high 23 points for Hiwassee (11-14).

Covenant drops two

Covenant College lost two softball games in the SCAD tournament on Wednesday. The Lady Scots lost 9-0 to No. 4 SCAD and 4-2 to Northwood. In the Northwood loss, Kim Cuticchia went 2-for-4 with an RBI, and Bre Rogers added another RBI.
