Cleveland falls in AAA state semifinal

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — For the fourth consecutive season, Cleveland’s bid for a state championship ended before advancing to the title game. Millington’s Jasmine Newsome’s 13 points led her team to a 41-38 victory over the Lady Blue Raiders in a TSSAA Class AAA girls’ basketball tournament semifinal tonight.

Millington set the pace early, taking a 13-2 lead, but Cleveland slowly closed the gap, getting within one on Morgan Isom’s 3-pointer with 16 seconds left in the first half.

The third-ranked Lady Raiders never trailed by more than five in the second half and got as close as one twice. They also had possession, trailing by two, three times in the fourth quarter but could never draw even.
