Lady Mocs cruise to semis

SOCON WOMEN’S BLOG: Western, UTC advance to semis

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. — An offensive outburst in the first half propelled the Lady Mocs past UNC Greensboro 78-33 in the quarterfinals of the Southern Conference tournament.

Shanara Hollinquest led the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga with 15 points and seven rebounds. Brooke Hand added 11 points, and all but one Lady Mocs player scored.

Gini Brimsley led UNCG with eight points in the Lady Mocs best defensive performance of the year. UTC limited Alabama to just 34 points earlier this year.

UTC turned an early 5-all tie into a 38-15 advantage. During that run, the Lady Mocs (27-3, 18-0) scored on 11 straight possessions, including four 3-pointers.

UTC shot 56.3 percent from the floor in the first half, including 7-for-10 from the 3-point line. The Lady Mocs defense also excelled in the first 20 minutes by limiting the Spartans (7-24, 4-14) to six field goals and 23.1 percent shooting. The Lady Mocs led 44-17 at the break.

The Lady Mocs maintained a comfortable lead of at least 30 points throughout the second half. They wound up hitting 13 of 28 3-pointers and limiting UNCG to 20.4 percent from the floor.

The Lady Mocs will have Saturday off before facing either Georgia Southern or the College of Charleston on Sunday in a semifinal game.
