Rumors at Ridgeland High School cause false alarm

by Chloé Morrison

Rumors about a possible altercation at Ridgeland High School prompted some worried parents to check their children out of school today, school officials said.

Spokeswoman for Walker County Schools Elaine Womack said there was a disagreement between a few students last week. Counselors and other school officials addressed the problem then, but the incident spurred further gossip and rumor of another problem today.

“We are not quite sure whether it was parents or students this week, but they started talking and gossiping and somebody got the idea there was going to be an altercation,” Ms. Womack said. “Rumor just spread and parents starting calling to check out there kids.”

Ms. Womack said authorities, including the Walker County Sheriff’s Department, were called in to make sure there was no imminent threat.

“There were no weapons, no reason for a lock down. It was all rumor,” Ms. Womack said about the hysteria. “People are so aware and weary of school violence these days. Somebody just jumped to some conclusion.”
