Tow driver arrested at wreck site

Staff Report

Police charged the owner of Yates Towing and Recovery with disorderly conduct and arrested him at the scene of an accident on Interstate 75 this morning.

Both Yates and district wrecker Broome’s Wrecker Service were called to northbound I-75 after an accident involving two 18-wheel tractor-trailer trucks and three cars.

Doug Yates, owner of Yates Wrecker Service, argued with officers that he should tow both trucks, according to a new release from East Ridge Police Department spokesman Erik Hopkins. Mr. Yates allegedly yelled and cursed at officers while officials attempted to clear the interstate. Officers asked Mr. Yates to leave and arrested him after he refused. He was transported to the Hamilton County Jail, where officials said this afternoon that he was no longer in custody.

East Ridge uses three different district wrecker companies in rotation for vehicle removal, though other wrecker services can respond at a vehicle owner’s request, Officer Hopkins said. Both truck drivers initially said they had no preference, though one then asked for Yates Towing and Recovery.
