Mae Boyd
Mae Garner Boyd, 83, of Hixson, passed away Thursday, March 6, 2008.
Mae was a native of Alto, Tenn., and a longtime resident of the Hixson area. She was a former employee with Brunswick Bowling Lanes in Hixson and a charter member of the Women's Bowling Association. Mae was a former member of St. Jude Catholic Church and currently a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church. She served as a volunteer for many years at Bethel Bible.
Mae was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Clyde L. Boyd; two brothers and two sisters.
She is survived by her three children, Philip L. (Vickie) Boyd, Brenda (Richard) Thompson and Linda (Randolph) Stitcher; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter; sister, Maxine Daniels; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home chapel with Father Mike Creson officiating.
Burial will follow in Hamilton Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today and noon to 2 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Maxine Helton
Maxine Elizabeth Calvin Helton, 79, of Lookout Valley, passed away Thursday, March 26, 2008, following a brief illness.
Born Oct. 30, 1928 to the late Bruce and Catherine Cavin, Maxine was a lifelong resident of Chattanooga and a longtime member of Lookout Valley Presbyterian Church. She enjoyed gardening and hiking and was a member of the Chattanooga Hiking Club and the Dahlia Society. She also volunteered at Reflection Riding Aboretum.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Barney William Helton; brother, Cullen Calvin; and sisters, Tommie Christian and Christine Hickey.
A loving, nurturing wife and mother, Maxine most valued the years she spent raising her four children. She also loved her role as grandmother to her 10 grandchildren.
Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law, Barney William II and Marianne Helton, Michael and Tonya Helton; daughters and sons-in-law, Ann and Chuck O'Mary, Janet and Phillip Holder; grandchildren, David Raines, Chris O'Mary, Jeff Raines, Carrie Brannon, Jessica Moss, Calvin Helton, Sarah O'Rear, Elizabeth Bowden, Wesley Helton and Gerald Helton; great-grandchildren, Kayla Battles, Blair Bowden, Alexandria Raines, Natalie Raines, Victoria Raines, Clair Moss and Elijah Raines; sister, Winkie Capley.
Funeral services will be Monday at 11:30 a.m. in the South Crest Chapel with the Rev. Everett Gossett and Pastor Grady Davidson officiating.
Interment will follow in Chattanooga National Cemetery with her grandsons serving as pallbearers.

Curtis Johnson
Curtis Lebron Johnson, 78, of Harrison, passed away Thursday, March 6, 2008, in a local hospital.
He was a lifelong resident of the Chattanooga area. Curtis attended Ooltewah High School where he was a member of the basketball team. After graduating he went to work for the DuPont nylon plant and retired from there after 40 years. He was a member of the Highland Sportsmen Club and an avid outdoorsman all of his life.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Nila Johnson; son, Darryl Johnson; daughter, Cynthia Johnson Kuehn; stepson, Gary Kirby; and stepdaughter, Leeta Kirby Oakes; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, one brother, three sisters and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Hamilton Memorial Gardens, Chapel of Devotion with the Rev. Grady Cooper officiating.

Lou Ellen Saffles, 91, of Soddy-Daisy, passed away Wednesday, March 5, 2008.
She was a member of the Oak Street Baptist Church. Ms. Saffles retired from the 3M Co.
Her husband of 60 years, Bill Saffles; daughter, Norma Jean; sister, Jean Sluder; and her parents, Floyd and Ellen Parrott, preceded her in death.
She is survived by her sister, Ora Rose; nieces and nephews, Marvin and Barbara Varner, Ron and Connie Sluder, Vance and Roberta Rose, Ken and Sharon Neighbors, Buster and Martha Underwood, Bill and Jackie Underwood, Jim and Sarah Carden; and several other nieces and nephews, also her special family at Life Care of Red Bank.

He was born on Sept. 27, 1938 to Clell and Mary Sanders Layne who preceded him in death along with his daughter, Jamie Ellen Layne; sisters, Sally Layne, Lena Grace Carter and Linda Basham; brothers, Clell Jr. and Carl Layne.
He attended Mount Etta Freewill Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife Loretta Smartt Layne; son, Danny Lee Layne; daughters, Claudette (Rick) Caldwell and Gayle Borne; sisters, Betty Rhinehart, Mary Miller, Ruth Rollins and Sue Ann Nunley; brothers, James Ed, Tommy, Kenneth (Sheryl) and Rex (Dorothy) Layne; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren.

He is survived by his four sisters, Freda J. Merendino, Ooltewah, Deborah (Vern) Webb, Brenda (Ron) Peardon, both of Jasper, and Donna (Gene) Walters, Knoxville; half brother, Robert (Diane) Payne, Jasper; several nieces and nephews and special partner, Charlotte Moore, Athens, Tenn.

CROSSVILLE -- Edward L. Smith, 87, died Thursday, March 6, 2008, at Veteran's Hospital in Nashville.
He was of the Baptist faith and a U.S. veteran serving in WWII.
Preceded in death by his grandson, Paul Edward Smith; parents, Ben and Ethel Smith; three brothers, Coy, Willard and Rhodes Smith; and one sister, Novella Campbell.

She had lived in the North Georgia area all of her life and was a member of Newnan Springs United Methodist Church. She was a member of the Friendship Class and enjoyed singing in the Choir. She also enjoyed gardening, sewing, quilting, arts and crafts, as well as baking and decorating cakes.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Vicki Germann.

A native and lifelong resident of Rossville, he was employed with Standard Coosa-Thatcher for 30 years and for the past 10 years, he was employed with Yates Bleachery. Mr. Scholtz was an avid fisherman and of the Baptist faith.
His wife, Kathy Darlene Scholtz, and brother, Charles Scholtz, preceded him in death.
Survivors include his sons, Terry, Gary, Dexter and David Scholtz; daughter, Holly Scholtz, all of Rossville; parents, Frances and Carlos Foster, Rock Spring; brother, David Scholtz; sister, Martha (Jay) Ratledge, both of Rock Spring; 12 grandchildren also survive.

Gifford Williams
RINGGOLD -- Gifford Elizabeth Little Williams, 91, passed away on March 6, 2008, at NHC Fort Oglethorpe.
A native of Johnson City, Tenn., she was a resident of Ringgold-Boynton, Ga., for 52 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. J.B. Williams, on Jan. 11, 2004. From 1947-1951, they served as missionaries in Africa (Benin City) with the Sudan Interior Mission Board, New York and later joined Baptist Mid-Missions, Cleveland, Ohio. They were married 67 years. Gifford loved gardening and cooking, always sharing them with her family.
Survivors include four children, Judith Anne Copeland, (husband Dr. Kenneth R. Copeland), Leighton, Ala., Marjorie Williams, Cleveland, Ohio, James B. Williams Jr., Atlanta, Sallye Beth Ouzts, Ringgold; five grandchildren, K.J. Copeland (wife Kim), Brooks Copeland, Amy Williams Broome (husband Chad), James Williams (wife Lessie), Cody Ouzts; and four great-grandchildren, Brayden and Addison Broome, Deacon and Kate Copeland. Gifford is also survived by a brother Euelle Little, Johnson City, Tenn. Surviving in-laws include, Durward Williams (wife Sylvia), Joe Williams, Anne Williams Landers.
A celebration of life will be Sunday, March 9, 2:30 p.m. at Burning Bush Baptist Church, Burning Bush, Ga., with the Rev. Randy Sholer and the Rev. Durwood Williams officiating.
Interment in Burning Bush Cemetery.
Mrs. Williams will lie in state at the church where the family will receive friends from 1:30-2:30 p.m. Sunday. Gifford would want everyone to wear pink or red, her colors of life.
