Eleven local students arrested Saturday morning and charged with underage drinking may face disciplinary action from their respective schools, officials said.
Signal Mountain police responded to a 911 hang-up call from 163 Woodcliff Circle shortly after midnight and found 14 people, most of whom were 18, consuming alcohol, authorities said. Of those, two attend McCallie School, four attend Baylor School and five are enrolled at Girls Preparatory School, according to those schools’ student directories.
It was not clear early today where the other students attend school.
McCallie officials said this morning that they were unaware of the arrests.
“It’s really difficult for us to find out about these things,” said Billy Faires, director of communications. “When we do find out, we want to pursue it.”
Mr. Faires said McCallie does not have a zero tolerance policy with respect to drinking and substance abuse. Most first offenses do not result in expulsion, he said. Students who are caught drinking underage go before the school’s disciplinary committee, which reviews the situation and determines the punishment, usually in-school suspension, he said.
GPS Associate Head Rickie Pierce said she could not comment specifically on this weekend’s incident, but she said all students caught drinking underage follow a 10-step program.
“GPS will not tolerate the use or possession of, we term it, illegal mood-altering substances,” Ms. Pierce said.
