Just when it looked like the second-seeded Catamounts were going to roll into today’s SoCon tournament final against UTC, Elon, the No. 6 seed, fought back in the second half.
Western Carolina (25-7) led 37-23 at the half but the Phoenix (12-20) rode the hot hand of Tierra Bumbrey to get back in the game in the second half. Bumbrey scored a game-high 25 points and tied a tournament record with seven 3-pointers.
It was Bumbrey’s steal and layup with 6:30 remaining that gave Elon a 54-53 lead, but it didn’t last. The Catamounts responded with an 11-0 run and survived to face the Lady Mocs today. Monique Dawson paced Western Carolina with 15 points.
